Yes from me and a yes from my 93 year old grandmother who voted no in the marriage referendum (had to tick the box for her at that time as she couldn't hold the pen which was painful to do).

Delighted with her decision this time around however, and she did in the face of an elderly neighbour and her middle aged daughter who we bumped into while walking into the polling station.

We went over to say hello and then upon hearing she was voting yes both of them started to shout at us, as if we'd change our vote at this stage.

The granny just said lovely day ignoring them and walked (rolled) past. Proud of her today.

LOL, this little anecdote has given me a good laugh! Thanks :)

You give out about lies. Yet you then say repealing the 8th will only allow abortions for 12 weeks. That in itself is a lie. The vote is about removing the right of the baby / foetus whatever you want to call it. The 2 weeks will be set by legislation which could easily be changed to between 0 to 23/24 weeks.

Could be, but politically extremely unlikely to be. You're scaremongering now.

A reluctant yes here too. Not mad about the practice of abortion but the amendment had to go. The no side never really convinced me why we should keep it.

Just voted yes in Dublin. We can always try for a secession referendum if things don't work out sure.

Let's hope turnout keeps rising with people home from work, bit concerning the drop off so far this evening.

I’m stating facts the poster I quoted was telling lies as if they are facts.

    I didn’t vote no.

I'm in the north so I didn't get to vote. But it would have been a big, fat 'yes' from me. Good luck to the repealers, I really hope it all goes your way.

Politicians could also lower age of consent to 12 but won't because that would be political suicide

    I voted yes.

Voted yes. I really highly doubt the actual result will be anywhere near 80% yes though like the poll above. I would be absolutely shocked if more poeple voted no for marriage referendum than this, and that was 62% I think, so Id say this result will be around 55% yes 45% no

It's over and done people, let's keep it civil.

    This too shall pass.

I voted yes. Also rather embarrassingly walked into the wrong polling station before I was put right to go to the other one across the corridor.

I'm in Asia. It's 1.37. Will I wake up to a predicted or actual result?

So you are ok with people telling lies , but when I pull them up on it I’m scaremongering.

I’m into facts not make believe fiction.
I based my vote on facts, not what I want to be facts.

Should a rape victim be forced to carry a baby. No they should not
Should a women be forced to carry a FFA.
    No they should not
Should a pregnant lady have her care dictated during labour . No they should not

That’s what my vote was based on. The rest was background noise and I can tell from someone who had their mind made up and didn’t care what other people said I found the yes side to be bully’s , whingers snd really annoying.

As you have demonstrated by calling new scaremonger for stating facts and highlighting lies

It’s about removing a constitutional line that gives the unborn equal right to life against the mother in all circumstances. After that the expected law will be 12 weeks.

And sure they could take it to 24 weeks but thats extremely unlikely, they’re still answerable to voters who have been given a handshake deal at this point for 12 week legislation. Any future govt wanting to expand the time frame will need to face the wrath of the voting public, just as this govt will to get in the 12 week law.

After a lot of consideration I voted no, being a mother myself I just cannot condone abortion. I'm not religious at all but I just felt that removing the amendment was not something that sits right with me

    Yes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

4 yes from my family of 5(sister is under 18) and 9 yes votes from immediate family, no no votes from either side of my family

Even though Im a yes voter I also found the yes side often quite inflammatary and unreasonable(some not all of course) , I know several no voters who believe that abortion is wrong and murder of a child that has no say, I think that should be respected given how sensitive an issue it is, I thought it was very rude the way the yes side insinuated that these people were either stupid or against womens rights

Sounds to me like you forced him into voting yes really.

My dads a typical working class 'hard' man. He would have no problem telling me to shut it if he didn't like what I was saying. He's stubborn as an ox and is more than capable of standing his ground.
Now with that in mind, having an open conversation and explaining facts to somebody doesnt come anywhere close to 'forcing' anybody to do anything. That statement reminds me of the old Irish tradition of sweeping things under the rug. Avoid and ignore the difficult and uncomfortable conversations out of fear of offending someone or rocking the boat.

I dont think 30 or even 20 years ago women would have been able to talk with their fathers about abortion. I know my mother would never have imagined having such a conversation with her own father. This in itself shows how much we're moving forward I feel.

So we are in agreement that the poster lied to her father.

No. You’re conflating statements, which were:

“We started talking and I very quickly realised how unsure he was of what repealing the 8th really meant.

“So I explained to him what repealing the 8th really means.

“I told him how abortion will only be available up to 12 weeks and after that abortions will only be considered in cases of fatal fetal abnormalities and where the womans life is at risk, like in the case of Savita Halappanavar.

“I explained how it will amend the constitution so that women wont be refused medical treatment and let die because theyre pregnant.”

You blurred one statement into another and assumed the story was that she said the 8th amendment repeal was about making it 12 weeks. They are two separate items both in her discussion with her dad and in the case of the law: repeal, then legislate.
