In my local town the No side was made up of some very nice people and then complete nut jobs.

Yeah it's always the nut jobs that cause the problems for any side.

I'm also talking about Vlads latest offering of wisdom despite being banned I believe.

Regarding the vegan poster replacing the no poster, Is it causing some controversy In your locality, given the threads about them on the site?

Very weak, Vlad. Probably should have used a DS baby pic (I'm sure your handler linked you to the Dropbox folder of them, along with the miscarriages, foetuses and ewwww.. Rónán Múllén headshots)

Not surprised but the saltiness of the prolifers post referendum has been delicious.

    Oh definitely.

Despite what you think, I'm still entitled to an opinion.we haven't quiet become a totalitarian state where opposing views are crushed.

I'm not the No side. I was never in a yes/no side so get off your high horse.

Exactly, we've been emancipated from that state, the RCC has lost their power over public debate. This is a good thing.

So we just trust her that she was raped and fulfils the grounds for abortion. Will be interesting to see that one abused!

Jeeeeeeesus. I thought we hit the bottom of the barrel with the whole rape committees.

You are part of the no side. All the straws have gone. Grasped over the last few days and weeks. “Concerns” suddenly appear after the result just like the SSM referendum. Think about close family members when highlighting these concerns. How would you feel if it was them in the situations that are being highlighted. I did already ask you how you’d have felt if you were told your partner would have to die because the 8th wouldn’t allow an abortion. You never answered and o suspect because it would make you think about the realities of voting to keep the 8th. Maybe some guilt would even creep in. Thankfully you’ll never have to know what Savita and her family went through....unless it happens to a member of your family before the repeal is signed into the constitution by our president. You want to quiz every woman that was raped in order to weed out the one that may be telling lies. That is horrible. As I said, think of it was your family member tha was raped. Would you lack compassion for them or lock them in a room until they gave birth?

In my local town the big vote No billboard saying to protect the babies is replaced with Go Vegan and don't eat eggs!

I find extremist vegans a lot easier to ignore (and a lot more amusing) than extremist anti-choicers

In my local town we have a few lefty social justice warriors and they normally create a fuss online but I doubt they will about this.
I think they was one similar before and most people wasn't bothered. The odd comment in passing about vegans/etc but noting really.

    Just playing devils advocate here.
    A woman says she's raped.
If she won't report it, would that not cast doubt on the claim?
Then to justify her claim, some poor sod gets falsely accused...after all it's not the first time a false rape allegation has been made.

    Girl goes out

    Drink gets spiked

Wakes up in a strange house/bed

She isn't sure what's happened and isn't even sure if she has had sex.

Not every rape is a violent one. Some women don't even realise they are pregnant for months so there is the possibility of this happening.

Also many (most?) Women don't report thier rape as there is a feeling of shame.

Yeah my wife has been vegan since she was 15, shes a vet nurse and had a farmer who owed the practice a small fortune say to her employer that he shouldn't be employing one of those. He was told his custom was no longer welcome and he had 30 days to clear settle his account or talk to their solicitor about it.

Now.youre getting the message (at last!)
Will be interesting to see that one abused!

And here we go again with this line that women will abuse the system. You're seriously deluded if you think women are going to be having abortions for fun.

In 2020 RTE will probably air a new series of Reeling in the Years!
What 2018 song will they play in the background for the abortion referendum?

Our local vet would have agreed with the Farmer. He wouldn't have hired one of those in the first place.

clearly not a particularly smart farmer, while perhaps he might have had somewhat of a point if your missus was an extremist vegan going around giving farmers lots of grief.....my guess that's not the case if she works in a country vet practice.

Just shows ta go ya....dickheads in every walk of life, farmer dickheads, vegan dickheads, anti-choice dickheads, pro-choice dickheads....

    they're everywhere :(

I never said every rape was violent and know someone who gave birth twice and didn't know they were pregnant till the hospital told them.

It's a pity the yes side feel they needn't entertain the hard questions for these hard cases.
I just hope our politicians deal with them when framing legislation otherwise we'll have very poor legislation.

Look man terminations were carried out here on grounds of suicidal tribulations, it was covered in the 2013 Act it isn't in the proposed legislation here as it is already in play - it appears you have overlooked 5 years of the system being abused.

Honest women; our countries women had to hang heads in shame and lurk in shadows to organize trips abroad as we didn't provide for them here that is the truth. Nobody wants to go down the trust women road again.

    No its not ok.
Abortion whether it happens here or elsewhere is undignified and traumatic.
Abortion is coming here we know that.
But its a sad and traumatic experience for any mother who goes through it and certainly not something to be celebrated.
To see clowns on the news and elsewhere wildly celebrating and cheering is pretty pathetic. They acted like they'd won the lottery.

Picking this up because Ive seen a lot of posts saying we shouldnt celebrate, and so on. I think we should celebrate We are not celebrating abortion obviously (as people try to make out any such celebrating would be to try stifle the occasion). A few of my own reasons that I can think of this Sunday evening

Firstly this was a landslide victory for allowing healthcare and providing compassionate, non judgemental support for women (and couples) having to make a very hard decision for whatever their reasons are. The Yes side went up against a myriad of religious fundamentalism, misogyny, vindictiveness that attempted to mask itself using complete lies and scaremongering whose best arguments were dismissive soundbites along the lines of
    • Shouldve just used a condom
    • Shouldnt have been a slut and just kept your knees together
    • Youre own fault, now you can suffer the consequences :)
    • Dismissively making out if a woman wanted an abortion it meant she had a mental illness and just needed to be restrained to a bed and force fed until the end of the pregnancy
    • Not that many people get pregnant from rape so not worth bothering with it

Second, they had their amendment for 35 years and didnt put in place any support for women and couples in a crisis. Further, they didnt even have the dignity to own the traumatic consequences inflicted on people by their 8th amendment
    • "the 8th doesnt say the word 'sepsis' anywhere in it, therefore had nothing to do with it",
    • "that was just a publicity stunt by 8th opponents",
    • "was their own fault for having sex, 'you play you pay :)' "

In my personal opinion that makes them scumbags and sociopaths; deceitful, no remorse, no regard for the wellbeing of others.

Third, as predicted theyre already disappearing again after the referendum showing they didnt care about the unborn, it was largely about paternalism, whether motivated by fundamentalism, vindictiveness or whatever. Further demonstrated by their not being bothered to repeal the 13th or 14th amendments; it was just about punishing women with the temerity to be 'obstreperous'.

In terms of those first three points, we just gave them, their amendment and what it stood for a resounding "Fúck you". Women wont be forced to make lonely flights to the UK or worse still take abortion pills alone in their bedroom probably frightened out of their mind, but unable to seek any care or support for fear of a potential jail sentence, nor will their country turn its back on them or only give a secondary consideration to her health once she becomes pregnant; thats all absolutely worthy celebration

Fourth, we've given the government a powerful mandate to continue to take measures against religious dogma being inflicted on people who dont subscribe to said religion

Fifth, speaking anecdotally, there has been a wonderful buzz and atmosphere around Dublin city centre and at home yesterday and today. I honestly thought there was a chance the No side would win; going around knowing ~75-80% of the people around you supported compassion and kindness and are good people is a very nice feeling :) Enjoy it

Lastly, the amendment was a pure NIMBY law enshrined in our constitution to placate people. I genuinely believe we're better than that.

Apologies for the long post, but I was genuinely surprised and moved at how much this meant to my mother (and other female relatives, particularly older ones) and how happy it made her to realise myself and my brothers all supported repeal. Id encourage everyone to celebrate this kind occasion in whatever way they see fit :)

Yes, I am from a real farming background. People haven't much time for vegans. I know farmers who've accepted gay family members, marrying different races, religions, etc but being a vegan would be tough.
People see vegan vets/nurses more suited to more domestic/horsey type of veterinary than the farming area of it.

All the more reason to lobby your local TD's and convey your concerns. Something you wouldn't have been able to do if No won.
