    I'd just renew it now and get it done if you know it'll expire before a scheduled flight, no point leaving it to chance and as munchkin said the online process takes around a week so you've plenty of time, even taking into account possible delays in getting the new one.

    It's just a visual check so you can work away with the current passport until it expires/new one arrives.

    Applied on a Monday,had new passport on Tuesday.
    Mrs O applied on a Friday and had her new one on Tuesday.
