Had to pay ups customs fees around 2 weeks ago before they'd deliver a guitar I bought on Amazon.

Amazon said they'll pay me back if I show them an invoice.

I rang ups but between all the chatter in the background of call centre and them not picking up what I was trying to say in the end I gave up.

The phone call end with agent tell me just wait for the parcel.

    Parcel came and no invoice.

Does anyone know if ups send out an invoice in the post?

    Hi folks,

I bought a watch from the UK in January for £225 stg. Couple of weeks after it arrives an invoice came in from UPS saying I owe them €100 for import and custom charges. I thought it was a scam so i binned it. Now i have a letter from a uk debt collector threatening legal action if i don't pay. Do they have a leg to stand on? I wouldn't have accepted the package if i had known there would be a charge like this.

The crowd I bought from just said that all exports outside of the UK are sold and shipped ex-VAT (hence the lower price) and local VAT is collected by the shipping agency on behalf of the government.

As I had no contract with UPS and had already received the item weeks before they billed me can they do this?

The seller told you that VAT and charges are payable by you, so yes, you owe UPS who have paid it in your behalf. This is the way imports work.

    Just to update on this.

    Still no invoice from ups.

I got onto Amazon again about it and they said, I waited long enough so they will get the seller to refund me the €44 I was out of pocket.

Also Amazon am refunded me the same amount as a goodwill gesture.

So worth the hassle in the end.

UPS accounts is an absolute quagmire. Hard to believe they can get simple things so wrong.

If the parcel was sent to you by a supplier, it is they who need to address the issue with UPS, not you.If they paid everything up to delivery, the contract is between them and UPS, not you and UPS. The same applies to the issue with the charges for VAT/Duty/charges. If it was sent forward with all charges paid, your supplier needs to sort this out at their end.

MOD: Moved to the UPS thread.

The only people you can complain to is UPS. Again, though, contract is with the sender, UPS do not have to deal with you at all.

Just recently, UPS gave me my worst ever experience with courier service.

Have two parcels bought from two different sellers, both using UPS.

DAY ONE: On the day of arrival of parcel no. 1 I got email from UPS about sort of exception stating access credentials are required to deliver item, advising me same time to log on to their website to sort that out. After multiple attempts to create account (website returned multiple random errors) found a phone number to them and rang. Outsorced Indian (I guess) voice asked for said security access details and took a note that my location is standalone bungalow with no codes required whatsoever, not even a gate to open. Also took my full address with Eircode and phone number just to make sure all is fine, despite the fact email I got already had my full address (with Eircode) inside.

DAY TWO: Next day, parcel no. 2 arrived without an issue, left on the doorstep while I was busy elsewhere in the house, dind't even hear the guy coming. Oh, and got another email that the parcel no. 1 to arrive next day and again my entire address (with Eircode and phone no.) was clearly shown in that email.

DAY THREE: Another email, another exception, again stating security access crap etc etc. and again my full address there. Got really pissed off on that very moment. This time their website finally let me create account, but, despite their promises, there was NO parcel details over there, no option to add a parcel either. But once I've successfully created account (whoa!) I was at least able to use contact form, writing down absolutely everything they asked me about so far, obviously including my full address with eircode and phone number. Shortly after submitting the form I got an email parcel rescheduled for next day.

DAY FOUR: Guess what? Yes, another exception email, surprise surprise! This time I went to the seller to sort things out with that bunch of clowns, additionally filled lost parcel claim on UPS's website as well.

DAY FIVE: UPS rang me! What did they ask for? EIRCODE ffs! Each email they sent to me already had it, but OK, gave it to them one more time.

DAY SIX (in the meantime weekend passed so actually more days in total) and I couldn't believe my eyes - parcel arrived at last. And guess what? There were 4 (yes, four) labels on it, and 3 out of 4 labels had my eircode clearly printed on them.

    Avoid like a plague.

And update to above. Aforementioned lost parcel claim filled on 7th of December. Just a while ago got email from UPS stating that upon their investigation they discovered that the parcel has been delivered on 9th of December! Wow! All that took them only 17 days to figure out! Lightning fast speed!

Unfortunately they seem to be all the same at this time of year. DHL had an Apple delivery to me which sat in the depot for 2 days. A week previous they held another Apple one, as they had a "problem" with the delivery address, despite having delivered there the previous week. Once Apple put a rocket up there it was delivered straight away.

You mean all UPS guys? Note that another parcel they had at the very same time has been delivered without a hiccup (see "day two" paragraph). Oh, and (for obvious reasons) I didn't mention during same period (1st half of December) I had numerous shipments promptly delivered by GLS, DPD and even Fastway.

Indeed, I have to admit, I literally live in the middle of nowhere of NW Roscommon and I'm aware that it can be a problem for some drivers losing an awful lot of time to deliver something small and that's why I always have my phone number included within the address, so if the driver would ever bother to call me I am open to negotiate any other option. I repeat: if they would ever bother.

No, I meant all the couriers but you seem to be lucky, apart from UPS.

    Hi all,

Have a small package that left Corbeil Essonnes at 5pm on the 27th, is it still 2-3 days to get to Ireland? With the bank holiday being Wednesday it'd probably be the end of the week before it arrives assuming things are running smoothly.

Bought a GoPro hero off the GoPro website

Now I know GoPro uses UPS for Irish guys like me.

An estimated date was given in the email of 21 March.

I'll update here again if I'm still waiting on the 21st or when I receive the gear.

Received by cheerful uniformed UPS gent this morning.

    Thank you UPS!

I consider UPS Ireland a fraudulent company, because they take money for a door to door delivery, but their vans, at least in my area, never intend to fulfill that obligation and instead always head straight to drop off locations. There is absolutely nothing I can do to change that and I had tried hard making sense out of that Kafkaesque experience before I realised that it's their MO and even their friendliest sounding staff are all in on it. Must be a particular nightmare for people, who don't drive. So now I try to avoid buying from sellers, who use only UPS and whenever someone sends anything to me using those frauds I give them a brief background and ask to consider changing the service. I hope they go bust together with their once reputable but now ruthlessly run to the ground brand.

I bought something recently from the UK and paid VAT customs etc. and all was fine. I went to fit the item and found it wouldn't fit my application, so got onto the company who told me they'd send me out a "few bolts" to try and fix it. Short story is that I got notification from UPS that there was a €15 charge for the delivery of my item - the value of the item was a few euro at most. I refused the delivery and told the vendor the reason I wasn't paying was that they hadn't included any custom information on the package and so UPS were now charging me for processing the delivery. The vendor is telling me that I will now incur an even greater charge for having the item returned to them. I have explained to them that I have contracted with nobody to pay any delivery charges and so will not be making any further payments. Am I correct in this?

If they didn't send it with all charges paid, then UPS will ask the receiver for VAT and charges. They should have marked it as replacement parts under warranty with a zero value.

Yes, but who is liable for the charges if I refuse the delivery? Surely I can't be expected to pay custom and brokerage charges on imported goods if I do not accept the goods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,590 ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

It depends on their T&Cs. Companiess who are familiar with exporting from the UK will normally have a clause in their T&Cs, not accepting returns because of non-delivery due to customs. The fact that they themselves have cocked it up makes it less clear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,439 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

Their T&Cs concern delivery of items ordered and purchased, and I've already paid all relevant custom charges and taxes on the item I ordered from them. This latest delivery was not part of my original order - I neither ordered or purchased this item. I've made this argument to them in an email, I'll have to see what their response is. I wouldn't have a problem paying the custom fees and taxes on the item, it's the UPS 'brokerage' fee I have a problem with. There was no 'brokerage' fee on the original order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭Enrico Palazzo

If the seller doesn't want additional cost incurred they can cover the charge, it was their mistake. You have no obligations there.

are there scam letters from UPS doing the rounds

got a demand letter this morning, don’t know what it’s for, I have no dealings with them 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m hoping to order an item from the States costing around €630 including shipping via UPS. I have tried to contact UPS about this but they can’t give me a clear answer, or perhaps they simply don’t know. Will I be liable for additional customs and excise charges when the item arrives in Ireland? There is no mention of DDP or DDU in the order or checkout info. If so, any idea roughly how much those charges would be or how I can find out? I think it would be around €150 if it was with An Post. Thanks.

I’ve also just found out that VAT would be added on import rather than included in the original order. So is that in addition to customs charges at this end?

First post in this thread. First you need to need to find out from the shipper if it is being shipped ex works. The post in the other thread will explain the rest
