Heard that a lot to....If its meant to be you will get it :( We have to decide if we're walking away from our dream house today....Its 60k over the asking price, we can still afford to go higher but its already wwwayyyyy over priced. Feel sick, $hitty day, just want to take a break from it but this is the time of year apparently for buying/selling so can't. How long have you been looking?

Twice we had put in the highest bid only for the house to be sold for a lower official bid plus cash. Weren’t even told that that we weren’t being considered , just saw the houses go sale agreed on daft. It is disheartening but don’t ‘settle’. You’ll have to live there for a long time so make sure it ticks most of the boxes.

What????? The??? F#@$??? Why would they do that? Did you contact the agent after to ask 'wtf dude?' Or the homeowner to tell them they'd been screwed out of money?

No the homeowner went with people who were prepared to pay a substantial amount of cash disguised at ‘contents’. EA was happy to go along with this regardless of the highest offer being made by us or at least we were never informed there was a higher offer.

On one occurrence I was also told by an agent that the purchase price was composed of the property price itself on which I could make bid, and an additional mandatory 15k for ‘contents’ (which consisted of old and cheap couch, beds and bedside tables, kitchen table and chairs and a 24 inch TV ... probably worth 300-400 euros altogether on adverses.ie at most).

Over year now - oh best of luck with the decision now, very stressful when you are conflicted knowing you are overpaying due to current market but yet its your dream home so the head goes crazy on trying to decide what right thing to do - guess you just need to ask yourselves - 6 months down line how much will you regret leaving it go? I was very near settling on one at the beginning but something not right so I backed out and even with all the stress since - I don't regret it !

What is the benefit of disguising cash as content? Tax reasons?

I'm wondering that myself. I'm thinking it could be a way of using cash that Revenue might be unaware of.

Might also be a way to hide some of the proceeding of the sale from a third party who has an interest in it (for exemple a bank with a mortgage in arrears on the property).

It used to be common to break stamp duty thresholds and not receive extra charges... Now I would imagine it is a way of getting the first time buyers grant while also being able to outbid others at the same buying level...

Either way, it's about hiding payments... or buying rather desirable furniture...

Just when I thought house buying was the seventh circle of hell I learn there's a whole new eight circle...

First time buyers grant (i.e. help to buy) is useless to anyone buying a second hand house.

Any specialist or manager thats worth 150k a year and willing to work internationally is probably going to have lots of options other than this pricey, rainy and slightly remote island.

If he’s in IT he doesn’t have that many options to get that money in fact.

Is there a "waffle about Google staff" thread?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭Sarn

Pretty much a brown envelope. More likely to be seen in a former rental in order for the vendor to avoid tax. It can end up costing the buyer the same, but the vendor ends up with more cash in hand.

The ones they advertise for or the ones they head hunt for? Because I know for the other multinational companies I work for, if they want a VP or above, they find them and offer them positions.

As for the high level question, anybody 150k+ a year at the lowest. Department VP's, or very specialised technical people, usually industry leaders in specific fields.

it's worth noting that the median salary at Google is more than that, at around $197k or €165k. FB is a bit over €200k. Threads on HN show 300k+ for senior positions.

Worth keeping in mind that those are companies which mostly employ professional staff in the silicon valley. Both the location and the majority category of employees is pushing up the median value a lot.

........... it's worth noting that most of the staff in google Dublin or on nowhere near €100k/annum

Everyone I know in Google Dublin is on 30 something. Some of them are through agencies so Google don't have to provide them the same benefits. These are the entry level positions so if say it goes up a lot more after a while but the above median looks a little off too me.

Google outsources some of their work to other companies, especially things that require languages, other big companies handle that. They promise people some really amazing stuff and when they offer you the job and you get the actual contract you find out you're actually working for a recruiting agency and have no security whatsoever. It's not uncommon to be let go 11 months into the job, so you're not getting a renewal.
I almost fell for a job like that, creating certain content for Google but actually hired by company X that doesn't really hire you and suddenly you get in touch with a company Y for contracts and all and it's perfectly disguised by the company who puts the job up. It's pretty disgusting and a lot of Europeans go back home after this experience I found out.

That’s the think. About 30% of the people in the Dublin Google offices are contractors often paid hourly by a temp agency with no job security and not so great salaries. And the rest are well paid but nowhere near Silicon Valley salaries.

So the Google American median salaries for permanent staff is of little relevance to the Irish property market.

I used to do some contracted work for google and their staff told me in general the salaries were at or slightly below 30k.

There are really 2 categories of employees: people with professionalqualifications engineers/accountants/etc which are well paid, and a lot of people doing donkey work often on temp contracts (think reviewing YouTube videos flagged by users or by an AI to confirm censorship of women’s breasts, or less pleasant, of terrorists beheading human beings).

My ex worked there, on contract, donkey work gig ........think it was low 30s she was on.

Don't be thinking all the professional qualified folk in google are well paid in relation to the €100k figures being thrown around in here by some posters.

Sure, never said that ... as I had mentioned they are well paid to Dublin standards for their qualification, not to Silicon Valley standards.

And from what I’m hearing from people who work there, the base salary is not necessarily mad but it is the benefits and the various bonuses and incentive programs which can make a difference.

I just read in the newspapers that 2 new housing estates are launching this week end in Dublin. Are there still queues of people for these launches? are apartments/houses in county Dublin, both second hand and new, still selling for way over the asking price due to bidding war/lack of supply? or its not as bad as it was in the last few years due to high property prices and strict mortgage rules by the ECB?
