I'm in the minority with IPTV in that use Kodi as my hub for it.
Simple IPTV for external providers and I share my E2 tuners to my shields using the Vu+ tuner plug in.

For IPTV I use Kodi with DVBViewer Media Server as a backend. With this I get rock solid stability, record and timeshift ability. I could also use physical tuners on this setup if I was bothered.

I did have tvheadend as a backend but setup is a pain and often when you switch to a channel you only get audio.

I run DVBViwer media server on an Atom mini pc with a 3TB external hard drive.

The mini pc runs at about 3watts, I use it for NAS to serve media to the shield and other devices, using Plex and/or shared folders.

    Nice set up!
I have my Zyxel 2bay NAS mapped to the Shields as an SMB share for media.

I use a combo of the Vu+ plugin for my physical tuners and Simple IPTV Client to get all channels available via Kodi and then use custom lists for convenience/simplicity within the channel manager.

I've never had an issue with the Vu+ plugin until recently and that turned out to be a simple config issue on my part agter upgrading to 17.6.
Now I've sorted that, it is rock solid again, I've been using variations of this setup since 2015 with almost 0 issues.

My main aim with keeping everything in Kodi is to keep the setup as Wife and family friendly as possible and to that end its working a treat.

Yeah, it seems difficult to find anything to get it working. It's no problem on the phone and casting it via chromecast!

I have All4 side loaded and it is working fine. Or at least it was a couple of weeks ago when I tested it last.

I got the APK from my samsung tablet.

I don't feel like we get the best use out of our plex. We really only use it for watching what's on the laptop. How is everyone else using it?

I download stuff on my PC upstairs and link that to the Shield via plex. I use Team Viewer to log in and download stuff in the background. I could be out with my mates and they're telling me about a movie or series (stuff that may not be on the mainstream apps) and I can literally log in on my phone and start downloading to watch the next day.

Does anyone use Plex to watch live TV? I assume you need to buy a subscription?

The plex library I’m using is better than Netflix tbh it has everything on it
Are you using Netflix from Mexico as part of a family to get it cheaper, it was on bargain alerts a while back

No I don't missus has a sub with 2 screens tho. Plex library I use is way better than Netflix and if I want a series that not on Netflix he gets it straight away and have 100s of movies and TV shows

Just bought on of these off Adverts, should have it Wednesday or Thursday.

Can the Now TV App be sideloaded onto this? I'd love to be able to remove the Now TV box from the sitting room, and have this as the standalone device plugged into the tele.

Enjoy! You should be able to download the APK file for it and install it. There's no official app for it as far as I know. You might need a wireless mouse/keyboard to use it though. Some of the sideloaded apps are difficult to use with just the remote.

The answer to this might be staring me in the face but how, using the Android TV OS on the Shield or any other Android TV device, are you supposed to watch streaming content from a website as there's no browser built into the OS that I can see?

I'm not referring to watching dodgy streams, I mean the ability to watch legit video content on websites such as https://www.popcornflix.com.

    Am I missing something?

Yeah you can sideload one of the many browsers for it Chrome,FireFox etc, etc. You might need to use a mouse/pointer/air mouse, for ease of use.But they work fine.

You'll have many ways to connect your library to Plex,Kodi, etc. If you get stuck on the Plex setup, just see/ask HERE

I think it's odd that a specialist box aimed primarily at streaming video content (and games) doesn't have a built in mechanism for streaming legit website content. Why would the Android TV OS designers/engineers want to deliberately block off that source of content?

When you side load them, do the apps get updated, or you you have to manually update to later versions?

They do update, that's if they are on the playstore for other devices. You can either update manually or tell the app store to do auto updates. Also if you have the Aptoide store installed you will get updates from there too.

Just be careful with some versions of Apks if you are getting them from other sites online,to sideload. They could have malicious code in them(not to cause panic or anything ;)),also the versions in the Aptoide store can be from anyone or anywhere. So just use logic, when using these.

    Paid for Retrox today.
Great Emulation Manager and much easier to get to grips with than RetroArch.
Great to get some proper classics up and running.
Thanks to whomever recommended earlier in the thread.
