We just have over a week left in 2017, time to see what goals lay ahead for folks in 2018? Will get the ball rolling i suppose:

    1. 1.25 Half marathon at CPC Loop Den Haag in March.
    2. Stay injury free once more.
    3. Improve 5k/10k PB's.
    4. And for the season that's in it, a surprise please.

Wishing everyone a very fruitful running year in 2018.

    1. Sub 20 5k even if I have to wait until Jingle Bells
    2. Hopefully get through S&C in one piece, stay injury free and notice the benefits
    3. 1.35 for a half
    4. 1:09:59 for 10 miles
    5. Keep enjoying running as much as I have been.

Happy Christmas to all, hope ye have a ball :)

Can we just assume no one wants to get injured and get to the actual goals? :D

    Run 200km in Belfast 24 Hour 2018 (pb 181km)
This means I have to make the same improvement I did from 2016 to 2017 (12ish miles) but I know I have it in me.

    Goals for 2018.

    5k: beat 17:38
Park Run: Run (at least)1 Park Run under 18 mins

    10k: Sub 36 (PB 36:09)

    10m: 60.xxmins (PB 62:xx)

    HM: 79:xx

    Mara - TBD (....Don't cramp??)

My 5m race last year in Dunboyne was one of my favourite personal performances of last year - 28:5x - matching that or beating it would be a bonus.

oh yes, maybe get a job at some stage after Jan 31st! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,984 ✭✭✭Duanington

    5k ( ugh)....f*ck it, sub 17.10

    5 miles - sub 29

    10k - 35.x

10 mile - race one, don't particularly like the distance though...and it doesn't like me

1/2 - sub 1.20 ( first half of the year hopefully

    mara - sub 2.50

Basically to do what I should have done this year :(

Oh, eat more red meat :o

    My plans for '18

First half of the year: Follow a 5k plan. Get close to 18:00

Second half of the year: Follow a marathon plan. Get close to 180:00

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,583 ✭✭✭Swashbuckler

    Main Goals for 2018;

Sub 37 10k. First crack at this will hopefully be Ennis in March.

Sub 1:25 HM. First crack at this GLR in May.

In two minds so far but gonna put it here. Run DCM in October. I'll see. Still haven't made up my mind on that one.

    Bonus Goals for 2018;

Win a parkrun. Will likely need the top guy to be taking a week off. Does this count? Haha. I'll take a soft win. Have a few second place finishes this year.

    Run sub 18 5k.

Run sub 30 5M. Unlikely to happen but may as well drop it here.

The bonus goals will probably depend on whether I run DCM or not.

    1. Sub 5:00 1 mile.
    - I've never run a timed 1 miler before but feel I could hit 6:00 at current fitness. This one doesn't feel massively important to me, but may try it if I get some time.

    2. Sub 18:00 5k
    - PB here is 19:23, and I'm doing sub 20 min Parkruns pretty comfortably now. Aiming to have a strong push for sub 19 by end Jan, and then some focused training towards the 18 before kicking off longer distances later in the year.

    3. Sub 40:00 10k
    - Current PB is 44:55, but that was fairly hungover and wasn't a very dedicated effort. I think this should come together fairly okay alongside #2.

    4. Sub 1:30:00 Half Marathon
    - Did 1hr 40m in Dublin Half this year (my first) and found it fairly okay. Feel this should be pretty achievable - probably going to do a late Spring/Early Summer attempt.

    5. Sub 3:00:00 Marathon
    - This is a leap, and may be the biggest challenge on the list. I did 3hr 52 in Dublin this year, and while I was very happy to beat 4 in my first mara, I do think I definitely undertrained and wasn't at an ideal conditioning level. This goal could get revised upwards, but I feel like I'd like to start the year aiming high.

    6. Run 1000 miles
    - Unlike previous, this may be a bit conservative (and I may have to aim higher to achieve previous. Still I like the number - would be most I've ever done, and it should still be achievable if life somehow gets in the way.

These numbers floating around in my head a bit, and haven't really developed a strategy but I think they're my broad goals. May be ambitious, but feeling pretty determined to have a go. :)

    Sub 15.30 5k and sub4 1500 would be nice.

    1 Mile: 6:45 (current PB 7:07)
    5k: 21:xx (current PB 23:29)
    5 Mile: 37:xx (current PB 43:03)
10k: Sub 45 but this will be latter part of 2018 I think (Current PB 47:38)
    10 mile: 1:20:xx (Current PB 1:30:xx)
    1/2 marathon: 1:50:xx (Current PB 2:01:xx)
Marathon: To complete my first :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭jaggiebunnet

    5k : sub 19, preferably around 18:30 (current PB 19:20)
    10k : sub 40 (current PB 42)
    5m : sub 33 (current PB 34)
    10m : sub 68 (current PB 68)
half : never done one so if I do I would be looking for 1:30
    full : 3:15 (current PB 3:29)

and around 2k miles would be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭jamule

Same as every year, good consistent running and fook all injury's

    5k: 17:30 (current PB 17:59)
    10k: 36:00 Current 37:07)
    10 mile: 1:01:00 (Current PB 1:04)
    1/2 marathon: 1:22:00

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,723 ✭✭✭MisterDrak

1M - National Road relays. Need to get picked for this, and if I do run drag this old body to a sub 5:35.
5K - Sub 19:30. Probably Fr Collins Parkrun
5M - Always give the Raheny 5 a good blast, Aim for sub 33
10K - Only really the Fingal and Dunsaughlin for this. Anything sub 40
10M - Battle of Clontarf in April, Sub 68 or Race series (Aug) sub 67
Half - Sub 1:30 R&R or Race Series. Sub 1:32 in Strawberry (Hilly F*er)

    General -
    2-3 XC's masters - Just finish strong...
    Top 3 (Division 2 - Winter League).
2 Races in the sun somewhere.
6-7 different Parkrun's around the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,182 ✭✭✭RonanP77

I'm just getting back into it now and know the body can't handle much and never will so I'll not be too ambitious.

    1. Run Parkrun once a month.

    2. Do the local mud run in Kilinkere, then Hell and Back and Tough Mudder.

    3. Go to the Forest Marathon and do either the 10k or HM at a very handy and enjoyable pace with the goal of finishing and ignoring the clock. Just to enjoy the atmosphere more than anything.

I'll be sticking with Jiu-Jitsu but only twice a week, I'll walk/hike a bit and I'll go for the odd cycle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

Get back running within a reasonable timeframe after the newbie makes their appearance in mid-February

Get running with the double buggy when #2 is big enough - we have one of these just waiting for a smaller copilot.

More Parkrun tourism - I'm on 23 different events at the moment, would like to get up to around 35-40.

Do a 10k in the summer and possibly a 10 miler (finally get around to doing the Cabbage Patch 10 in Twickenham!) or half late in 2018

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

    Sub 19 for 5k @enfield

    Sub 1:35 for Half marathon

    Sub 41 for 10k

Maybe a marathon if all goes to plan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

    sub 2:49 in Rotterdam

(which requires doing a fair amount of consistent training before then, which means not getting injured, which means maintaining/improving S&C)

will decide goals for the second half of the year after that one

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭El Caballo

    1. Stay consistent
    2. Increase Mileage
    3. Profit

May be a copout but I'm just going to focus on the process this year and whatever happens, I'll take it.

    I'll unashamedly rob the idea.

    - Run 220 km in a 24 hrs race in 2018, venue TBD.

Only one goal. It worked in 2014. Nothing else matters, indeed.

I'm hoping to build on what's been a very productive 2017...so far :pac:

    General Goals:

    - Get to more club traning/runs
    - Do more long runs (will probably be helped if I go to the club more often)
    - Race once a month
    - Have a proper go at XC.....had a couple of mixed outings this year when I wasn't really in peak form....got really schooled at the county intermediate.

    Specific Goals:

    - Dungarvan 10 Miler: <65 mins
    - Adare 10K - PB (<39:05)
    - Mallow 10 Miler: possible crack at 5 year old PB (<63 mins)
    - Great Limerick Run Half Marathon: assuming the other races go somewhere close to plan, I might have a lash at this... <90 mins is a realistic target I think.

Good luck to all in 2018 :)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Consistently run 5km under 30 minutes (Parkrun PB of 29:28)
    Run 10km in < 1 hour (this year's Fingal 10K was 1:12)
    Run 10 miles in 1:45 (this year's FD10 was 2:01)
Run a HM in 2:15 (this year's HM was 2:34)
Run a marathon in < 5:00 (this year's DCM was 5:45 - some day, not really decided if this will be a 2018 goal or not though)
    Run more races
    Possibly join a running club
    Take up some strength exercise
Get my 50 race goal in Parkrun
Partake in a bit of Parkrun tourism, expand my horizons beyond the single one I've done so far.
    Run 1000 miles
Keep injury-free, enjoy it, don't end up seeing it as a chore
    Maintain weigh-loss achieved in 2016-17

Some slightly strange ones there Adrian.

You're aiming to take 2.10 off the 10miler yet just 1.23 off the Half!!

Surely the Half aim should be 1.30 (or 1.29.59)

Well the 10 mile one is fairly soft. I was probably close to 70 mins going through 10 miles in the half but never did this in a race.

You may be right though. 1,30 seems very ambitious to me though. I guess I'll just do the training and see what happens on the day.

I should race a few half's this year, Bohermeen, Madrid, Rock N Roll Dublin.

    This thread got me thinking...

6 "A" races in mind for next year...
Goal 1: Get at least 1 good performance out of the 6
Goal 2: Try not to pull out of any of them due to stupid injuries, unlike 2017.
Goal 3: Take advantage of my new age category where the opportunity arises. Looks like the main target for this will be the UTMB, where an age category podium could be within range if I can achieve goal 2.
Goal 4: Try to make as few feck ups as possible through the whole process of my one "A+" race, whilst enjoying the whole process to the max. That sounds pretty bizarre, but given the nature of the race it makes a lot of sense.
Goal 5: try and do more incidental racing, particularly getting to more IMRA races this year, for the sheer enjoyment of it.

    Marathon: <3:00 (PB 3:09:17)
    Half Marathon: <1:25 (PB 1:26:40)
    10k: <40 (PB 41:19 on a hilly course)

    800M|02:30 (2009)|02:19|02:28

2017 should set me up nicely for 2018, haven't been this excited about my running in a long time.

The Half is in April and it's a big target, I've been working fairly hard to achieve it, the one that most excites me though is the 800 and 1500 but I've been saying that for years now without doing anything about it. Racing the NIA Live mile has been the first step.

    Nutrition and S&C
Both are a massive weakness and I feel this is where I can make time gains.

2000 mile target for the year
1500 for 2017, 1400 of which has been from April on.
Continue to run every day till April 9th which will mean 365 days of running.

Full track season and try a 400M
If I was a juvenile athlete, I would be all over the 400m/800m and 1500m. I believe that's where my strengths are, could be interesting to find out if I'm right.

    Race the Dublin Novice XC
I raced it only once and that was in 2008 and I dropped out on the last lap, would like to correct that, albeit 10 years later.

    1) Get past the 100 mile mark at Belfast 24hr
    2) Sub 10:00 for 100k (currently 10:37) . Probably Spartans Way in April

    That's it for 2018.

I have to try not to get distracted by the shorter races and keep my training mileage up.
All going well, I might have a crack at my Marathon PB (3:27) in the Autumn.

    1. To not get injured like I did before DCM again, ever....
    2. Half PB down to 1:30 or as close to as possible.
    3. Full down to 3:30, I know I can do it as long as I put the miles in and stay injury free.
    4. Sub 18 5k, dont care when in 2018 but would love it.
    5. Sub 40 10k, havent raced a 10k since Fingal!!

And as a lot have said, enjoy running as much as I have this year, more so in the warmer months :pac:

Realize I missed this last year. Gonna try and approach this as a performance review and something specific enough that it is measurable

    Mileage - 3000 (This year to date - 3055)
Simple fact that this is a target is with a new baby come April maintaining mileage will be sign that I have managed it well

    Performance
    - PB's - 10k, HM, Marathon - (current PBs: 34.10/1.16.01/2.43.01)
    Bronze - 1% improvement,
    Silver - 2% improvement,
    Gold - 5% improvement

    Competition
    - 2 Championships gold medals (Dublin/Leinster/All Ireland) - (Currently 1 from 2017)
    - Top 10 Dublin Intermediate XC (Best previous performances - 11th, 13th)

    Coaching
    - 24 PB's achieved (from 11 athletes)
    - 3 >5% improvement PB's (largest in 2017 - 17.5%/10 min over 10k)
    - 2 CountyProvincial/National Championship medals ( 2 achieved in 2017)
    - 1 Outright Podium Finish (1 Race win in 2017)

A FKT on The Ireland way would be one for you.
Curious to see who gives it a shot first.

2:55 marathon ultimate goal. Will try in may and again in dcm if unsuccessful.
2017 yielded a sum total of zero races dude to inward growing verruca, no running for 4 months.
2018 will be different. In spring I want to do 3 HM and the 2:55 then reassess for autumn.
    10k sub 37
    10m sub 60
    HM sub 1:23
Would be delighted to get pbs

Not going to set any time targets this season, for the first time in my athletics life. Last season went perfectly to plan. All the cards fell the right way. No distractions re weddings, stags, life. I managed huge consistency across a 10 month time frame, and was hitting 5 days a week almost every week. I got perfect conditions too the day I needed to. I didn’t even pick up a cold. It couldn’t have gone any smoother.

This year there are a rake of weddings and stags and other life events. Half my outdoor season is gone, and both National indoors and national outdoors are gone, which is where I have run most of my current PBs and which seem to bring out the best in me. I’ve been averaging only 4 days a week this winter. Training has still been good, but not at the level of last year.

I don’t expect to beat my PBs. But I also love sprinting, and really enjoy the training on the track with the group. So my goals are more vague this year:

    1) Enjoy my training and racing, which is hugely important if one wants to stay at this in the medium/long term.
    2) Race as much as I realistically can over 60m, 100m and 200m
    3) Run to a level I am happy with
    4) Run one meet in Belgium and perform strongly there

If I break any of my PBs it will be a bonus. It could happen (more likely indoors), I’m just not going to expect it this season.
