    Problematic universal set. Agree.
Are we ready to do grand theorizing with regard to Internet addiction, or should be consider theories of the middle range (see Robert K Merton)?

Some may be a good thing :

New South Wales cohort sample. No comparative data with different cultures? Business Insider Report shows percentages. Percentages are descriptive, not inferential. No correlations or statistical significance levels reported. Sampling sizes not reported, or sample validation techniques. Other variables may have accounted for the change? Explained and unexplained variances for Internet addiction, or social media exposure? Also, confounding with one form against another?
Dr Payne says the trend may also open the door to newer forms of criminal activities. “Those native to social media may explore antisocial and criminal behaviours online which at present attract far less scrutiny from parents and authorities,” he says.

Thanks, I loved that joke but rarely get to use it anymore as no one used dial up.

I used to rename peoples internet dial up connection "Tinternet"

I was helping a neighbour years ago and they had a teen age son and got a got a huge phone bill.

They were leaving the connection on over night at times. How do I know when we are connected the old parents asked. OK do you hear this ... (I connected the modem and let them hear the modem hand shake)
They listened to the phone extension and said ... oh is that what that sound is? LOL

I connected a psychical spliter to save them from bankrupcy

Ah the early days of Tinternet

Now we have mobiles with fixed rate unlimited text & voice. Phone also hotspot. Cost no longer prohibitive to limit potential Internet addiction.

True. :D But it makes for a handy excuse all the same! "I'm on the net 15 hours a day because I want to help reduce crime and make the world a safer place."

Indeed! Just spoke with a colleague yesterday who subscribed to a major comm corporation that offered a free smartphone, along with unlimited voice & text, including mobile hotspot for 30 USD monthly. Depending upon how you define Internet addiction, I may be joining the ranks with these low prices shortly.

IAD. Internet Addiction Disorder. Or Ivan Goldberg's satire? Names a disease that doesn't exist?

The Myth of Mental Illness by Thomas Szasz. Any merit when discussing Internet Addiction?

Gaming addiction now a disorder, according to WHO. A kickback has already started as experts warn it is "premature." Link: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/gaming-addiction-classification-premature-experts-say-1.3540055

It will be controversial. Different opinions among experts. This one might have a bit of road to travel yet!

Smartphones use while driving, although outlawed, is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents across the pond.

Black Swan has me reading One-Dimensional Man (H Marcuse). Applies here to Internet addiction. Techno-society expectation.

As noted elsewhere, recommend skipping introduction, as well as chapters occurring before those that address "Thinking," techo-society, scientific method, and operationalisation. Especially read pre-scientific Galileo historical influences, and Edmund Husserl's critique of how applied science and technology has formed the boundaries of existence, suggesting such addictions would be normal and not dysfunctional in today's positivist technological society.

    Beginning with "Thought" chapters.
