As long as they are presenting the news in the nude I'm okay with this.

They used to have just men back in the day. But now that nobody watches it anymore - they put on women.

    Completely sexist that.

Caitriona Perry is still bangable, the other one not so much.

Surely they could have found some younger, more attractive women?

It’s the news, not a PornHub.

Do you actually want to get your rocks off watching the news?!

    Yes.

Why do you think news presenters are always attractive?

Careful now, Trump got in trouble for saying less about her.

    ;)

I'd doubt you are a regular six one viewer.

    Shanley is an annoying bastard.

I'll just continue getting the news from boards.

Perry's rabid anti-Trump "reporting" from Washington has paid off

Two massive virtue signalers. They'll fit right in.

How come RTE never hire anyone from a working class background for any if their positions? Also you don't see many people of colour on RTE despite a fair whack of our population being just that.

Imagine the outrage if two men had been chosen.

It's the ****ing news, not miss universe.

    Honestly, who gives a ****?

Boards.ie never fails to disappoint, 14 posts in and we have the usual ****e from the usual posters. You can set your clock by them.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say your not the most popular person in any given room. "Virtue signalers", would you ever go and f#ck off you pretentious clown ya.

You have no idea about the particulars of their background, or any other presenter. Both my parents worked what would be called unskilled and semi-skilled jobs yet because I was brought up in a certain part of south Dublin, my accent is very neutral, but my family were definitely working class. If you're talking about accents, talk about accents.

    Oh and, Brian Dowling.

We were all calling for rte to cut costs and now that they've employed two women to read the six one we're complaining. No pleasing some people.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. Personally, I couldn't care less who reads the news. I always know the news long before Six One anyway.

My point was the different reactions that would have been evident had two men been selected compared to two women. Had it been men there would be about 40 pages of outrage here already and social media gone mental.

I wonder will they both be on 'dobbo' money.

More like Dobby money I'd say.

No issue with 2 women getting the job, for example I can't think of a guy who would step into the role, so with that in mind I don't see the issue in them getting the job (that isn't a check the lads first statement so let's not twist words on that!).

Shanley in particular seems like a bright person, although has she had any news broadcasting experience before? That's a sincere question I honestly don't know.

I don't particularly rate Perry, actually that's an understatement. One of the good things about RTE was that in spite of everything that has happened in the world over the past 20 years or so, be it in Ireland, the UK, Europe, wherever, you never really got much of an inkling or indication as to what the newsreader themselves thought. It was a straight forward news program, "Here is what happened, good night". This was always a really good thing about RTE news in my opinion. Perry on the other hand has gone out of her way to be as anti-Trump/pro-Hillary as possible. She'd have fit in well presenting on CNN! I think Shanley will be the superior of the 2 for that reason I suspect. I'll probably avoid it because of Perry, as generally I associate what she's saying as being ridiculously slanted or highly dubious in nature.

(Obviously this approach doesn't extend to other shows on the station.......pretty much most of them at this stage will have a bleeding heart sentiment or the usual "right think" narrative.)

RTE could have announced it as they would have done any other in-house story. Instead they've decided to themselves both pat themselves on the back for their own decision, as well as they themselves making a big deal out of their gender! Surely this is a bit patronising to them. The standards of RTE has gone to the toilet over the past 5 years. It is a shadow of its former self, bordering on unwatchable were it not for sport.

100% agree i seen a couple of her reports from America where she was basically sneering at trump. Its not her job to do that. She is supposed to remain neutral.

Why do they need to be attractive to read the news?

Because that is how some men categorise women - bangable or not bangable, and their worth, for such men, is attached to that indicator. Sad innit.

You're trying to tell me that people still watch RTE???
    Now THAT is shocking

Director of RTÉ News & Current Affairs Jon Williams said
"I'm thrilled that Keelin and Caitríona will bring their intellect, competitive drive, and focus on storytelling to RTÉ's Six One News"

No...they will be reading out loud from the " Autocue" lets not kid ourselves here

Programmes like the Six One are no longer 'news bulletins'. You're harking back to a day when the news was only a few minutes long, like the radio bulletins.

Six One is much more much about analysis and interview than it is a news bulletin. Partly it's a news roundup, yes, but it isn't intended to replace Twitter, or BBC News notifications. I don't see how anyone can have ever sat through such programmes, and missed the point of them entirely.
