No he was let go by Tim Alnut.
All he has ever wanted to do was play rugby and that meant wherever he was needed.

The Megabucks would be an incentive but the tonguing should deal the deal :P

Jokes about misused words are always funnier when they contain misused words.

Disappointing. He could definitely have done a job at a province and I reckoned one of Ulster or Leinster would come in for him given the age profiles and status of their existing options.

At 27 this season he'll probably never come back to Ireland now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him offered a spot in a Saxons team either.

He's missed the whole season with a knee injury, I think. Might have been deemed too risky.

I see Trevor Brennan's son, Dan is making great strides in France... Part of the U20's 6 nations squad.,.any chance that a young 19.5 stone prop might be tempted to these shores?

He sees himself as French and wants to play for France. It has been commented on publicly. Brennan and Irish rugby are not on good terms.

Not to mention that France considers their u20 team as their second team he will probably tie himself to France permanently during these six nations.

Pretty sure World Rugby deemed that illegal now?

I excluded those who seem to have "disappeared" from google-search-year-result (Mark Best, Willie Ryan ...)
And i've made the (long tideous) work to separate those who seem out of contract (for now), and those who are bound overseas (or already back in Ireland) beyond this summer.
In red those I'd want to see signing in one province (let's say Connacht :P)... Because there're promising and/or there's an opportunity to make them move on low money (relegation or huge competion in their club), compared to their decent level.

AJ became NIQ 3 years ago, not this season :)
It was just about players who were on the exiles list until now and can't be anymore
Tadagh Leader to follow soon I guess

John Madigan, the imposing former Munster lock, was in the second row for Massy as they lost 27-17 to Dax.

23-year-old Madigan is enjoying a fine season, with 15 starts and a further three appearances off the bench, and is understood to have recently signed a two-year extension to his contract with Massy.

    Yeah it's a pity
same about Joe Joyce, Bristol starter, re-signed
Only Mark Flanagan to point out in 2nd row as a useful available exile (if Andrew Browne isn't re-signed for example)

I've been upset to see Tomane, Godwin and Taute recruited when I've watched Bredan Macken (doing well) with a  Championship team. He was 3rd choice with Wasps. He could easily have been 3rd choice for one of those provinces.

I don't say he could have been part of RWC 2019 or 2023, but Munster would have been better to get a NIQ back-up SH, Connacht a NIQ back-up LH and Leinster a back-up 10 (after-Sexton era anticipation). Rather than wasting a spot when a IQ decent player was there for the homecoming.

Macken never really took off at Leinster or Wasps. He had a trial with Leicester that never went anywhere and then signed with London Irish.

Tomane and Goodwin were both getting a number of starts in their last teams, Taute too and he was signed as injury cover and impressed to the point that he was given a full time contract.

I don't see the point in signing Macken who's had plenty of chances to win a starting spot and couldn't at Pro14 and AP level, just because he's IQ.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,964 ✭✭✭connachta

Of course they start some games. But they're not absolutely necessary. Macken would have been well able to do the cover job.
He's good, but was just in a too competive environement to expect those few games he could have in Ireland. The main point is IQ spots would have been better use elsewhere for the provinces as I precised..

If you look at the signings this season, Burns/Addison/Haley/Moore all IQ players, I think the IRFU are more than sufficient in signing IQ players who are worth a shot.

The players you've mentioned who Macken should've been signed instead are hands down better players.

I just don't see a point at all in signing a mediocre at best squad filler just because he's IQ.

Disagree with last part, because of limited NIQ spots. But agree an effort was made this season
