This response is why a lot of supporters from other counties accuse us of arrogance. There is an assumption among Cork hurling supporters that when Limerick run out of gas (whenever that will be) that Cork will be the county to step into the breach in their place. But if you look at our performances against Limerick and compare it with other counties results against Limerick over the last few years it doesn't back that up at all.

They hammered us in 2021 and beat us convincingly enough last year too. Galway and Kilkenny gave them closer games last year and the year before that Tipp were ten points up against them at half-time in the Munster final. I know they collapsed in the second half but they only lost by five points.

We haven't been their closest challengers while they have been winning all those AI's.

In my opinion there are a lot of other counties better placed than Cork to take advantage when Limerick's reign is ended (and that isn't going to happen any time soon)

I reckon we'll land that hurling all Ireland before Waterford do. Going back to Davy Fitz was a massive mistake.

Before that all Ireland final our record against Limerick wasn't that bad. I never said that we are the next best team after Limerick. I said that outside of Limerick i don't fear anyone. Cork, Galway, Clare, Waterford and possibly Tipp as well are all around the same level really.

Who are the teams you see as better placed than us? We did beat Kilkenny in the 2021 championship, and Galway only barely beat us this year after Hoggie sitting on the bench for the first half. We do have two u21 all Irelands and a minor all Ireland, to use as a base to build a team out of as well.

Who are better placed than us to topple Limerick? I would say Clare, Kilkenny and Galway. Clare beat us this year, Galway did too although it was only by a point and Lehane missed two 65's for us. We didn't play Kilkenny but they got to the AI final, we got beaten in the quarter-final so you can't say we are better than them right now. I think we are better than Waterford and Tipp although that could change in 2023.

I don't think Clare, Kilkenny and Galway are ahead of us at all, our record over Clare overall is very good over the past few years. I think ourselves, Clare, Kilkenny and Galway are all around the same level really. Kilkenny are facing into a new era without Brian Cody as well. So it will be interesting to see how that goes, but i don't fear those teams at all and to be fair they don't fear us either. I'd fancy our chances against anyone on any given day with the exception of Limerick.

It's kind of a bit self-delusional to say a team that beat you aren't better than you. The fact of the matter is that the most recent time we played Clare and Galway in the championship they beat us so on that basis they are better than us. I know when Galway beat us Conor Lehane missed two 65's and we missed a lot of other chances too. But the simple fact of the matter is that they were ahead of us on the scoreboard at the end.

The last time we played Kilkenny in the championship we beat them but this year they beat Clare convincingly (who beat us handy enough) so on that evidence you'd have to say they are better than us at the moment.

St Finbarrs v Ballyea on TG4 Sunday from 12:45 followed by the other semifinal, Na Piarsaigh v Ballygunner

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

I wouldn't agree with that at all. Right so Clare, Galway and Kilkenny did give Limerick tougher games this year than our own most recent efforts against them, but on any given day i'd fancy our chances (although i'd always be wary with regards to Kilkenny) against those teams, and likewise they would fancy their chances against us. I don't think there's any clear stand out contender, amongst the chasing pack after Limerick. What we need to do next year is establish ourselves as the best of the chasing pack, and then we can build on that going forward.

As am outsider I see Cork as being right up there behind limerick. I see them as actually having more potential than a Galway or Kilkenny. Clare have a good first 15 but that's it..little underage coming through. Tipp are in the wilderness and won't be winning much for the next few years. Waterford are up there allright.. but yeah I'd have Cork,Waterford right up there. Limerick are the bench mark obviously and what Cork are obviously lacking is the sheer power and aggression that Limerick have in them but Joyce has it and some of the younger fellas hunger is obvious

as a limerick man I'd rate Waterford our biggest challengers for 2023 I think Davy is a good appointment for them and that's saying something coming from me.

for what it's worth I think cork are there or thereabouts too I'd rate them ahead of galway and strangely enough kilkenny.

Anyways you can't rate one team cos they beat whoever as teams play different v different counties, for eg when limerick are average we can nearly always put it up to tipp look at clare this yr the sight of the green Jersey puts jet fuel in their vains.......

If cork get their defence sorted which is a big ask and won't happen in my opinion without new players but if they could achieve that no reason why they can't compete with the best in the country

Yes i'd agree with this. Cork definately up there for me next year as Limerick's biggest challenge. I also don't expect to see Tipp challenging for a while.

Barrs are on at 1pm on TG4, reckon they will put in a good performance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 977 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

I reckon they ll win. Ballyea are a team of Gaelic footballers and Tony Kelly. Their skills break down at the top level. Whilst they are very fit and never give up I think St Finbarrs should win this if they tie up Kelly.

A lot better players than the 'Barrs have been unable to tie down Tony Kelly over the years. If he turns it on today hard to see Ballyea beaten. Ballyea have experience of winning Munster, also have home advantage. Bookies have them as 4/6 favourites i'd probably concur with that.

The second Munster game should be a cracker. Two teams who know they can go all the way. I have a slight hunch for the Limerick men to dethrone the All Ireland champions but it's a toss of a coin really.

Compared to the eerily silent Croke Park last night both these stand alone semi finals should provide a nice bit of an atmosphere.

Barrs down to 14 after 10 min. Ballyea 1-2 Barrs 0-3

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,045 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Barrs 1 down at HT. Making a game of it but you'd imagine the extra man will tell on a heavy pitch

Barrs doing very well to only be a point down at ht. 1-05 v 0-07

Deservedly down to 14 after only 10 minutes.

    Playing well.

    Playing quite well.

    So disappointing for the Barrs.

Cunningham missed a 65 for a draw with the last puck of the game, but the scorer in chief had a fine game.

A thoroughly fine performance in fairness.

A disappointing result for the Barrs, but they've had a fine year regardless.

Once again Cork's representatives in the Munster club championship are eliminated at the first hurdle. Just shows how poor the standard of club hurling is in Cork. Yet when Cork begin their championship campaign next year you will have Cork supporters crowing that "we have a good chance of the AI this year".

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,390 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Previously, the above would be correct.

However, it would be completely blind and wrong of any poster to lump the Barrs performance in with the losses of the past as it shows an ignorance of the game itself, but just taking the result

Never more than a point or two between the sides, great quality, steal and determination, great fitness, away from home, a last minute 65 missed to get a draw while playing with 14 from the tenth minute.

While still a loss, it is unbelievably lazy posting to group it with the god awful losses of recent years.

Galway have won the most club hurling all Irelands along with Kilkenny, yet they've only won one all Ireland in the past 34 years, and have only five senior all Irelands at intercounty level overall. In football we have more club all Irelands than any other county, but that hasn't exactly translated into consistent success at senior intercounty level either.

Definitely. Will it be sufficiently 1986-esque Blood Red for my liking? We'll wait and see 😭
