Have my pixel 2 XL a couple of days and I've a question regarding the mobile network connection. My phone is a UK bought some free version, but I'm showing 4g as LTE on Vodafone. I was told it's the firmware on the phone.
Anyone else with a 2 XL showing LTE instead of 4g?

I know it's more or less the same but has anyone got a 2 XL showing 4g instead of LTE?
Also I get 4g plus through my plan. Will the LTE show a plus symbol while on 4g plus?
    Thanks

Yes, it will show LTE and LTE+ instead of 4G and 4G+....at least that's my experience switching between many ROMs on HTCs over the years.

Good to know, thanks for that.

I have the original Pixel XL and I also can't tether to any other device, an exclamation mark comes up next to the wifi symbol on whatever device I try to connect.

Im blue in the face from contacting them, don't even waste your time with the chat on the my Vodafone app because you will actually turn into a monster from sheer frustration at their stupidity and incompetence.

I was told It's got something to do an APN I have saved in my connection settings called Vodafone.MISP that can't be deleted or altered.

I don't know how it got into my phone and they don't know how it got into my phone and the other issue with mine is every month they take whatever excess credit I have in my account and say I've been charged for using a hotspot which is ironic as I can't even connect another device.

So every month I go through groundhog day and ring them and explain everything all over again and they try the same steps all over again and just give up and refund my credit.

It's a joke to say the least.
I have the original Pixel, non-XL version. I'm with Vodafone too and have no problem tethering at all to my laptop or tablet. The Vodafone.MISP access point is in the list of APNs but isn't selected, Vodafone.ie (live.vodafone.ie) is though.

So I figured out that the Pixel 2 will automatically route all Hotspot traffic through the hs.vodafone.ie APN which is not editable or deletable(greyed out as said before).
This APN is meant for mobile broadband customers and as such will cost you money/credit everytime you use it.

I couldn't use my Hotspot as I had no credit. I contacted vodafone's technical support and they asked me to edit/delete the hs.vodafone.ie APN which is not possible on the Pixel 2. You can delete every APN but the hs one.

Vodafone say that you should be able to delete the APN and that would fix things. I can imagine what Google are going to say..

This is where things stand now. I would advise those of you on Vodafone to check that you're not getting charged an arm and a leg for using your hotspot.

Boo_hoo you could always pop into a Vodafone shop and get a new SIM replacement for your number.

    It might make a difference.

Shouldn't cost anything to try except for your time.

I have vodafone aswell, and since I got the sim I went into my APNs and immediatly changed the the live.vodafone.com apn, if its in your list then change to it and your hotspot will be working again :) Uses your data rather then charging you extra.

If its not on your list, send me a PM or reply here and I'll give you the details of the APN so you can add it manually.

Yeah, I have the live.vodafone.com APN and it is selected. When I browse on my phone it will use the live APN but any data used through the Hotspot is routed through the hs.vodafone.ie APN which eats up any credit I have.

If you can check to make sure your data allowance is getting used and not your credit while connected to your hotspot I would appreciate it. Thanks.

When your looking at the list of apns have you tried hitting the 3 dots top right and reset to default?

    hey,

Yeah I've used it a few times in the past and it stays with the live apn and doesn't use my credit. I am on Vodafone X prepay if that means anything! T&C's for the plan do say tethering isn't allowed on the hs apn and only on the live.vodafone one, so its strange how yours automatically switches to hs even though you didn't set it.

I had exactly this issue with a Sony Z5 phone about a year ago.

Vodafone were never able to sort it out.
Just kept saying that tech were investigating.

I'm convinced it was an issue in Vodafone's end.
However they didn't have anyone technical enough investigate it thoroughly. So it remained unsolved.

To this date I still have issues with tethering on my Moto.

I delete hs apn and use live.vodafone.ie

But hs gets recreated (not by me!) And I get charged from my PAYG balance.

I finally got it working after doing 3 factory resets, flashing an older version of android, getting a new sim card and talking to both Vodafone & Google.

In the live.vodafone.com APN I changed the MVNO type to GID & MVNO value to ff(this was the default setting I think). Doing this deleted all other APN's apart from the live.voda one. I tested the hotspot by downloading a few GB of files which came out of my data allowance. The average speed to came to 5.5MB/s.

Why this works I am not sure. MVNO is mobile virtual network operator which refers to operators that don't own their own infrastructure, think Virgin Media using Three's infrastructure.

Type in *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone info, and tell me what the settings are for "set preferred network type" . Mine are currently set to LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)

    My 2XL is the same.

Thanks for that. I was trying to figure out if it was possible to charge the LTE network signal to 4g. I tried a few of those settings, but without success.
Just wanted to confirm I went back to the original setting

It could be done by making an edit to an XML I think, possibly default.xml. As it's in /system you'd need to be rooted though.

LTE is different to 4G. The 4G standards were set at 100Mb/s while moving and 1Gb/s while stationary. Mobile phones could not meet the standards set out and as such cannot call themselves 4G. The next step after 3G was called LTE which offered improvements but did not meet the technical standards set out by 4G. It was later called 4G LTE due to marketing pressure.

What it comes down to is that LTE is not true 4G. Manufacturers/operators wanted to be able to market their phones as 4G which is how 4G LTE came about.

References from here. Definitely worth a read.

As far as these devices are concerned, 4G and LTE are the same. Different ROMs for different regions show different things. Likewise for 2G. Some ROMs show '2G' others have 'E'.

So, what you're saying is that in some regions they incorrectly display 4G when in fact it is not possible to have 4G. It is all a marketing move and it has worked. People want to see 4G because that is what's advertised to them.

What I'm saying is that what you're saying is interesting, but irrelevant to the icons that are displayed in the status bar.
