Can anyone from the Mayo side of things please explain why Horan would even consider this role with all the media nixers he has going on, which seem to be going well for him. Don’t really know anyone who has a bad thing to say about him especially as a pundit. Surely he’d have to jack them in. Nothing other than an all Ireland title will do...and it does seem like a poison chalice at this stage based on last year.

He is a male from Mayo
All that's matter to us is winning an All Ireland
More important than all of that other silly everyday life stuff

As per the epic Metallica tune

    Nothing Else Matters

Mayo GAA TV will be showing coverage of the club championship.

"We are delighted to announce we will back on air covering Mayo GAA club championship games thoughout September and October. We'll have details confirmed on our first broadcast over the weekend."

When you think about it, the difference between the 2017 and 2018 championships for Mayo was just 215px-Slidingdoors.jpg
as indeed was the difference between winning and losing the AIFs in 2016 and 2017. If Durcan (or whoever it was) had taken that goal chance v Kildare, who knows how far we would have gone.

So JH doesn't have to be a wide-eyed optimist to believe he can have another right good rattle at the All-Ireland with essentially the same team as he had between 2011 and 2014.

Because he's a Mayo man who cares about Mayo football and wants to see the squad succeed?

maybe he has learned a few things from being a pundit and wants to put them into practice.

He is well enough established now as a pundit that he can afford to take the chance of going back to Mayo for a year or two. Unless it turns into an absolute disaster and Mayo get relegated from Division 1 and walloped by Galway in Connacht (figures crossed for the latter) then he'll still have enough credibility built up to return to punditry.

If he wins an All-Ireland then any book he writes will probably sell more copies in Castlebar than the Bible ever managed in Knock.

Imho that essentially could be one of a few problems if he does become manager. Dublin actually started this years AI final with only 8 of the team that started the 2015 final.
Sincerely hope I`m wrong, but Napoleon`s Old Guard ("The Immortals") and the Battle of Waterloo came to mind reading that.

If James Horan is to take over then there should be no notions of him winning an AI next year with any member of the team he built between 2011 and 2014. Any manager wishing to win the biggest prize in gaelic football needs to be absolutely ruthless without a shadow of sentimentality towards any player. Past or present.

A team five years older with many of his key players from 2014 arguably past their best now. New faces needed but i don't think they will be as good as the likes of Higgins,Boyle,A Moran etc was over the years.

You have a point. But dont forget Colm Boyle was playing junior football for mayo in 2011 (roughly 25 at the time) when horan toke over last time. If he takes it he must have a plan, and he must see potential because he knows just as well as anyone else that anything less than an all ireland is failure.

Heard Akram showed well against Mitchels. A lot of pace. Should be getting a look in next season.

What age is he now, 22 or thereabouts ?
If he is then he would need to start nailing down a regular position in the league if he is going to progress.

He's u21 this year. From what I've seen, he is a strong, fast ball carrier but needs to improve his kicking. Modern wing backs have to be able to chip in with scores.

Very important nowadays especially for a wing back. Not just for scores, but for accurate ball inside. Especially a diagonal ball from the wing into a full forward line. Accurately kicked, it is a nightmare for a defense to deal with.
At 21 he has time to get up to senior championship grade level, but he would need to be kicking on and seriously pushing for a regular league starting place to bring him on.

He was on the 2016 u21 team?? He must be at least 22 at this stage. He played in the fbd league last year and im nearly sure he made an appearance in the allianz league too

I thought he didn't show at all in the FBD. He had a good chance against Galway but seemed to be caught in the headlights a few times.
I can't recall him getting a run out in the league.

He has the traits, as said though he needs to take it to the next level.

Anyone from the championship over the past few weeks stand out aside from the usual?

*Move to Ireland aged 4 in 2001 - So he is 21, but of course could be 22 this year :)

He was minor in 2015 so that means he won't be 22 until sometime next year.

Mitchels and Tubber should come through their games handy enough and they'll play each other in the semis then.

The other half of the draw is open for someone to make the final. I'll go for Garrymore and Breaffy to get through.

Semis are 2 weeks after the quarters. Final is 2 weeks after that. At least it's not completely rushed like the last few years.

Probably Sunday 21st October then. The following weekend is the bank holiday. Would be better for a bigger attendance. People home for the weekend etc.

    relegation is
Cross v Knockmore - I remember there being close to 5k at this game in 1996, cracking day and Knockmore put on a display. The same the following year in Ballina - a double header with Kiltane & Kiltimagh, packed house
    Aghamore v Davitts

Great opportunity for Westport to make a final with that draw

Would have been a fantastic bunch of players on both teams there for Cross and Knockmore. Was Padraig Brogan playing that day?.

It is about time that westport were dining at the top table. They have a great rugby set up, an even better soccer set up, so westport gaa had a lot to do and now it is paying off.

Brogan, Peter butler, ray Dempsey, Kevin Staunton, Kevin o’neill and pat Reape all played senior for Mayo. Everyone on the panel had played for Mayo at minor or above

Any truth to the rumour that Jack O'Connor was above in Breaffy House over the weekend?
