Some difference since the 1st year

Even the early bird weekend price isn't great value

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,482 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

Wow that is uninspiring. Does not take much to convince me to go to a festival but at the moment I can't see myself going to this. What a terrible line up compared to the first year.

Its a shame, because there are no other festivals on at that time of the year. And the RDS is a really handy location for a festival.

I still can't get over TLC being the main headliner. I'd swear that was an April Fool's joke if it wasn't July.

Samhain is on the weekend, not the same level of 'festival' to be fair though.

No interest myself this year unfortunately. First year was top notch.

Didn't go to Metropolis the first year, went last year and enjoyed it even though it was a bit pricey for what it was.

The lineup this year seems a little uneven but I did get myself a day ticket for the Sunday. Not gonna lie, I'm mainly excited about seeing TLC! :p Think some people are underestimating how big they were, though whether the nostalgia factor is gonna be enough to pull a big crowd with those ticket prices remains to be seen.

Samhain and BD will both be on the same weekend as Metropolis. Both will be way better value

Will it draw a scummer/kids crowd

Don't think so, was a nice crowd at it the last two years anyway.

Laurent Garnier joins us for a two-hour exclusive Irish performance and his first in Dublin show in three years. One of the most iconic pioneering DJs of the dance music scene will join Leftfield, Death In Vegas & FJAAK on the Saturday of Metropolis.

Is that a dj set or a live set for garnier

    Hi everyone,

Few questions - I've never been to this before so just wondering what the set up is like? Im going on the Saturday which I see now is not a full festival day whatever that means so Im assuming that its basically just a concert? Is there much food stalls/beer stalls or is it just an open bar?

Says opens gates at 4, would music be likely to be on straight away or is there anything else to do?

    Their website is pretty terrible!

Very large indoor rooms mostly. When there's not a lot of people at a certain act the place can feel very empty. It's dark and cold at this time of year. Some cool artsy installations in some places of rooms. They had a deadly fire breathing tower with DJs playing in the main courtyard at it in the first year but that was missing last year.

There's some music related talks on as well as music as far as I recall. There'll definitely be some kind of DJ on when it opens but other than that there's not really much to be at other than sit around having pints. The food is standard chipper crap from what I remember. The bars are pretty standard too, sponsored by Bulmers. I think they have a gin sponsor this year too so probably a cocktail stall or two.

Last year the opening concert was just one hall open for the night and had Kormac on at 7.00pm followed by Mount Kimbie and then DJ Shadow (didn't go that night so no idea if it was any good). The other two days it was 5 stages, one dedicated to talks & lectures with 4 dedicated to music.

Main Hall - biggest hall, had headline acts play such as Moderat, Grace Jones, Jack Garratt, SBTRKT, Badbadnotgood, Paul Kalkbrennar, Sugarhill Gang. Very spacious hall which never felt that full with a bar at the back of it.
Shelbourne Hall - The secondary stage really, my personal favourite as it isn't as big as the main hall, has bars to either side I think. Booka Shade, Fatima Yamaha, Solomun, Groove Armada played in here last year.
Serpentine Hall - Much smaller room with more of the underground/upcoming acts playing. Quite far away from the other halls. Feels more like a nightclub, had acts like Mall Grab, Clams Casino, Jessy Lanza in here.
Industries Hall - Another massive hall (close to size of main hall) with a stage just for local and Irish DJs, has a few bars and chill out areas, art installations and also stalls selling merch and food.

Out in the courtyard then there are more food stalls but can't remember the food being anything special.

2015 was one of the best festivals I've been at, last year was only okay, line up this year feels even weaker again but will probably still go. Usually some decent after parties in town also (which cost extra). Nice crowd at it both years without many scumbags.

If the opening night is just one stage with 3 or 4 acts that is pretty crap, looking that way at the minute though as doesn't seem to be enough acts to fill 4 stages for 2 days on the poster. Edit: Was looking at old poster, should be more than just the one stage on the opening night.

Thanks guys, only really going for Leftfield anyway but they seem to be throwing the word 'festival' around loosely by the sounds of it. I thought it would be like the Sunday til I read the words 'opening concert' and did a little digging. Ah sure, its close to home anyway. Hopefully be good!

Think I might pick up a ticket now. Terje, Sulta and Mall Grab are all solid acts.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,833 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

Denis Sulta and Mall Grab are massively popular at the mo with the younger deep house loving crowd. Dare I say this substitution might increase ticket sales? Or maybe that demographic were all going already.

Delighted with that, thought TLC were a joke of a headliner. Todd Terje, Mall Grab & Denis Sulta should all be great. Will be buying a ticket for the Sunday on payday!

Thats a definite upgrade right there.

Any idea on stage times? Havent been to one of these festivals in years. Don't want to show up at 10PM and find out the night is nearly over like The Point back in the day!

Stage times aren't out yet but if you show up at 10.00pm you will miss almost everything :p Usually starts around 3 or 4 and finishes up around 11.30 I think, headline acts probably start around 10ish.

While I haven't seen him play in many years, DJ Jazzy Jeff is not to be underestimated, hes a proper old school DJ, his scratching skills are unreal, YouTube some tracks from 'He's the DJ I'm the Rapper' like Live From Union Square and DJ on the Wheels I you want a taste. Too bad Will Smith is too big to play with him any more they were great together.

Anyone have an idea of the price of tickets you buy on the day for the after parties in town later?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

Have my Sunday ticket for this. Looking forward to it massively, although a few of my mates left it til last night to grab their tickets and they were sold out.

Hopefully there won't be any major clashes when timetable is released.

Stage times were due out today but no sign of them yet?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,346 ✭✭✭Mrs Shuttleworth

The crossover of gigs this weekend is nuts.

Seems a bit strange that Metropolis would run early than previous years concurrently with Annie Mac and Eats Everything etc at Weston Airport.

I'm going to the old crusties gigs at the 3Arena but I'd be at all three of these events if they were scheduled separately.

    Stage times are up

Todd Terje and Denis Sulta are clashing, as are Jungle and Mall Grab.

Surprised to see DJ Jazzy Jeff on so early at 4.
