Hard to know what to expect, line up the first year was brilliant I thought but last years was poor enough. Would love if Justice were one of the headliners as they have not announced any Irish dates and are touring Europe up until the week prior to Metropolis.

Yea agreed the first year was great but last years line up was very meh in which they lost money over it. Yea can def see Justice headlining since they have yet to turn up over here during the summer

hopefully it's a POD event without Booka Shade or Groove Armada on the lineup for the umpteenth time.

It's too soon after the Picnic. Could attract a lot of passing scU mbags being the Halloween bank holiday weekend.

It was great close to Christmas last year - broke up the boredom of the winter.

It's only a week earlier than last year if I'm not mistaken?

No chance. There's that samhain rave out by the airport, and I'd imagine barndance will be doing their usual halloween party that weekend too. Strange that there would be three big rave-ish events on the same weekend.

My bad - apologies. You're right.

I recalled it as 5th December but you're right it was November.

    I'll delete my post.

You're right, that Annie Mac/Samhain gig is on the same weekend - will split the crowd.

To be fair, my initial lack of enthusiasm is based largely from ignorance, rather than a dislike for the acts announced. Will have to go do some research. Bonzai would be the person I'd most be familiar with. Aside from TLC, but we'll ignore that :p

    Any recommendations?

Who is TLC is that not Townlands Carnival?

That's an atrocious line-up. How on earth are TLC a headliner? What a waste of money that could have been used on a better act. They're a university student bar midweek gig caliber.

The lack of day tickets is a big problem too. I can't see many people willing to pay 130eur+booking fee for a full price weekend ticket. I'd have no interest in going for 2 days, so would happily pay slightly over the halfway price for a day ticket ,say 70-75eur. If there was a good line-up.

Nostalgia will bring lots to see tlc who contrary to your quite ignorant comment were actually a popular band. They do day tickets every year as a simple bit of research would prove to you. Apart from tlc I think it is a fine lineup.

There's only 9 acts revealed of a possible what, 30/35 altogether? Plenty of room for the line-up to grow. Already have a couple heavyweight names in Richie Hawtin and Leftfield and good selection of mid line-up bands in Jungle, Booka Brass and Mount Kimbie.

There are no day tickets on sale as of today, so my post gave out about the lack of day tickets currently being on sale. Seems reasonable to me.

TLC had 3 hit singles in Ireland in the mid 1990s. They weren't particularly notably popular at the time, nevermind now 20+ years later and one band member down. Acts like East 17, Five, S Club 7 etc had far more hits in Ireland in the 1990s and regularly play student bars now - TLC are definitely at that caliber of act.

Longitude and Forbidden fruit have lower ticket prices and manage to get current, international headline quality, acts like The Weekend, Kendrick Lamar, Disclosure etc. Thats the level Metropolis should be aiming for.

That's what I thought after the initial line up last year but the second announcement was even worse. Not an awful lineup but definitely not good value for money at this stage nor did I think last years line up was good value. They set the bar too high the first year!

    some additions/day breakdowns.
I thought the Saturday would be a full day, not the "opening concert" nonsense like the Thursday last year, would be fairly raging if I got a weekend ticket due to all the likely Sunday clashes.

If I do get a ticket now, it'll probably only be for the Sunday, although at €80+ for a day ticket, I probably just won't bother TBH.

Wow that is uninspiring. Does not take much to convince me to go to a festival but at the moment I can't see myself going to this. What a terrible line up compared to the first year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,194 ✭✭✭Blut2

Its a shame, because there are no other festivals on at that time of the year. And the RDS is a really handy location for a festival.

I still can't get over TLC being the main headliner. I'd swear that was an April Fool's joke if it wasn't July.

Samhain is on the weekend, not the same level of 'festival' to be fair though.

No interest myself this year unfortunately. First year was top notch.

Didn't go to Metropolis the first year, went last year and enjoyed it even though it was a bit pricey for what it was.

The lineup this year seems a little uneven but I did get myself a day ticket for the Sunday. Not gonna lie, I'm mainly excited about seeing TLC! :p Think some people are underestimating how big they were, though whether the nostalgia factor is gonna be enough to pull a big crowd with those ticket prices remains to be seen.

Samhain and BD will both be on the same weekend as Metropolis. Both will be way better value

    Hi everyone,

Few questions - I've never been to this before so just wondering what the set up is like? Im going on the Saturday which I see now is not a full festival day whatever that means so Im assuming that its basically just a concert? Is there much food stalls/beer stalls or is it just an open bar?

Says opens gates at 4, would music be likely to be on straight away or is there anything else to do?

    Their website is pretty terrible!

Very large indoor rooms mostly. When there's not a lot of people at a certain act the place can feel very empty. It's dark and cold at this time of year. Some cool artsy installations in some places of rooms. They had a deadly fire breathing tower with DJs playing in the main courtyard at it in the first year but that was missing last year.

There's some music related talks on as well as music as far as I recall. There'll definitely be some kind of DJ on when it opens but other than that there's not really much to be at other than sit around having pints. The food is standard chipper crap from what I remember. The bars are pretty standard too, sponsored by Bulmers. I think they have a gin sponsor this year too so probably a cocktail stall or two.

Last year the opening concert was just one hall open for the night and had Kormac on at 7.00pm followed by Mount Kimbie and then DJ Shadow (didn't go that night so no idea if it was any good). The other two days it was 5 stages, one dedicated to talks & lectures with 4 dedicated to music.

Main Hall - biggest hall, had headline acts play such as Moderat, Grace Jones, Jack Garratt, SBTRKT, Badbadnotgood, Paul Kalkbrennar, Sugarhill Gang. Very spacious hall which never felt that full with a bar at the back of it.
Shelbourne Hall - The secondary stage really, my personal favourite as it isn't as big as the main hall, has bars to either side I think. Booka Shade, Fatima Yamaha, Solomun, Groove Armada played in here last year.
Serpentine Hall - Much smaller room with more of the underground/upcoming acts playing. Quite far away from the other halls. Feels more like a nightclub, had acts like Mall Grab, Clams Casino, Jessy Lanza in here.
Industries Hall - Another massive hall (close to size of main hall) with a stage just for local and Irish DJs, has a few bars and chill out areas, art installations and also stalls selling merch and food.

Out in the courtyard then there are more food stalls but can't remember the food being anything special.

2015 was one of the best festivals I've been at, last year was only okay, line up this year feels even weaker again but will probably still go. Usually some decent after parties in town also (which cost extra). Nice crowd at it both years without many scumbags.

If the opening night is just one stage with 3 or 4 acts that is pretty crap, looking that way at the minute though as doesn't seem to be enough acts to fill 4 stages for 2 days on the poster. Edit: Was looking at old poster, should be more than just the one stage on the opening night.

Thanks guys, only really going for Leftfield anyway but they seem to be throwing the word 'festival' around loosely by the sounds of it. I thought it would be like the Sunday til I read the words 'opening concert' and did a little digging. Ah sure, its close to home anyway. Hopefully be good!

** TLC POSTPONE METROPOLIS APPEARANCEBUT NEW SUNDAY ACTS ANNOUNCED**

*40 ACTS PERFORMING ACROSS 6 STAGES NOW ON SUNDAY**

This week we have received the unfortunate news that, due to a back injury sustained by T Boz (Tionne Watkins), TLC have been forced to reschedule their European Tour of UK, Germany and France - which also includes their performance at Metropolis Festival.

Whilst we are disappointed at this news, and have ADDED FOUR extra incredible acts to replace them for the Bank Holiday Sunday, all in keeping with the programming and style of Metropolis Festival. For those of you who bought Sunday tickets especially to see TLC, you can get a full refund from Ticketmaster, but let us tell you about the acts we’ve got coming first...

We are thrilled to bring you the awesome Norwegian heavyweight TODD TERJE! A disco don and house music maestro, he’ll be bringing you his signature fusion of deep house, electronica, funk and nu disco. Get into the mood and check out the brilliant Inspector Norse right here, pump it up loud!

We are immensely excited to be bringing you West Philadelphia’s DJ JAZZY JEFF! Shake the Room,' 'Summertime' and 'Girls Ain't Nothing but Trouble' led to platinum album sales and international stardom - and he continues to represent with his solo projects, collaborations, mixtapes and live shows across the globe. Over the course of his career, DJ Jazzy Jeff has achieved many accomplishments including a DMC Championship and multiple GRAMMY and American Music Awards and nominations.

In the short time he’s been on the scene, DENIS SULTA has rocketed into the big leagues of dance music and established himself as a global talent. (Resident Advisor). This Glaswegian talent produces his unique brand of music that has led to him being dubbed the ‘next best thing’, winning Breakthrough British Producer at the DJ Mag Awards 2016 and earning the #26 spot on the celebrated Resident Advisor Top 100 DJs poll. His effortless mixing and bang on selection skills will make this a set not to miss.

Australian DJ MALL GRAB has been described as ‘the poster boy of the blossoming lo-fi house sound..(with) killer releases and fun-filled, on-point DJ sets’ (MIXMAG). Think I might pick up a ticket now. Terje, Sulta and Mall Grab are all solid acts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

Denis Sulta and Mall Grab are massively popular at the mo with the younger deep house loving crowd. Dare I say this substitution might increase ticket sales? Or maybe that demographic were all going already.
