So, the EU have finally come good :)

Roaming in the EU is no more as of today... you can travel and use your phone as if at home.

I have an old contract and I am now in the funny position where I could sms someone when I am roaming for cheaper than when I am at home :D

The data roaming seems quite convoluted.

My understanding was that the data roaming is still wishy-washy with only a certain amount of your package available.

Depends on the provider. My provider is not pulling any shenanigans, my data is my data whether I am at home or roaming and nothing changes. If you're provider is pulling a fast one, then change right away.

Three and Virgin Mobile have broken the EU Regulation and do not allow you to use your full data allowance within the EU. I'm sure others have too, I know Vodafone allow usage of full allowance.

Show me the way to go home... bom bom bom.
I'm tired and I want to go to bed.. bom bom bom.

Wherever I may I use my phone as if at home... bom bom bom.

meteor sent me a message (I'm on prepaid) and said that I can use 6gb of my data when i travel. I get 15gb with a €20 topup.

    Are you sure?

I'm with three and they have fully implemented the regulations for me.

I'm 100% sure that the regulator here that is Comreg will be coming down on operators that are non compliant like a tonne of bricks.

Sorry, wait this is Ireland where no one is accountable for anything. So fat chance of that, unless the EU decide to fine Ireland, little will be done.

I'd be happy just to get coverage. I'm with Three, and the coverage home and abroad is absolutely brutal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Am already been able to do this since January OP. Unlimited minutes and texts back home, 10gb of data, and 100 international minutes and texts, just like at home.

    :p

Although with the UK coming out of the EU, am wary of not getting to used to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Depending on your provider and contract. Vodafone has had it on new sign ups and renewals since January.

To be fair, I'm with Three and my plan is unlimited units /data here but I've got nearly 9GB data EU roaming allowance in a given month. Plenty for me. I was away recently for a week and only managed to rack up 1 GB.

As much as I dislike the company and their non compliance, if I was going to fly to mainland Europe for a week to sit on the couch streaming Netflix, I'd just stay at home.

Virgin used "fair usage" excuse, so it's 30GB on unlimited package at home that is cut down to 5.5GB abroad and 1 cent per MB over 5.5GB.

Anyway, 5.5GB is plenty for me...

You need to check with them as it depends on your contract and your data allowance.

Basically, they will give you a certain amount of your data allowance to roam with in the EU .

For example, I'm on the monthly SIM-Only contract that gives me 'All You Can Eat' data here but I can use nearly 9 GB of that to roam with in the EU within a billing month.

The charges you highlight is the cost per MB when you exceed your allocated roaming allowance.

You don't get "all you can eat" data in the EU, and get the bare minimum as per the EU directive. Pretty scabby, still better then nothing though.

"All you can eat" is a bonus add-on for when in Ireland. I get the full allowance of my plan when abroad, which is both the minimum and maximum that every other provider offers.
    Mr.S wrote: »

Very generous. Vodafone would charge me an extra €10 per month for less data.

    Three: 100 minutes and 6GB - €30
    Vodafone: 100 minutes and 5GB - €40
I would advise you to check what they're actually giving you before you stream a few seasons of GOT when you're on your holidays.

I am on the cheapest plan available and get 6GB. Anybody using more than 6GB while on holidays is simply not enjoying their holiday.

Networks have agreed limits with the EU regarding data in relation to how much can be used.

This is because networks charge each other €7.70 per gb for date used between networks.

So take your monthly spend excluding VAT, divide by the €7.70 and multiply by 2.

I am with Meteor for €25 a month.

    So €25/123*100= €20.32=non vat spend.

    €20.32/€.70=2.63

2.63*2= 5.27 and Meteor have allowed my 5.3gb of my 10gb monthly data allowance to use for roaming.

This will increase over time as the wholesale rate will drop again on January 1 and each year up to 2022 when it will be only €2.50 per gb.

Vodafone are not that generous when you consider their domestic allowance is less than the other networks.

Three tried it but were pulled up by Comreg and had to change their allowances,

The trick is to not buy your phone from them. I'm paying €35 per month on a SIM only plan and getting unlimited calls and texts to any network, 100 international minutes and texts, 15GB of data, as well as my full allowance when roaming (and also in the US for €2.99 per day, which I used recently).

Generous in the sense that they are offering like for like data limits home vs roaming (promotional or not) where as all other networks aren't. E.g. 20gb on Voda at home = 20gb in the EU - so yes, very generous.

So you call their offering of far less data when at home (and slightly less data when abroad) when compared to the other providers, for far more money "generous"?

    Mr.S wrote: »
Three copping out and saying their promo is for Ireland use only is scabby, but as you said - more then enough for brief travel stints through Europe.
But I don't see it as scabby. I think you're looking at this from a "glass-half-empty" perspective! And it's more than enough for "brief travel stints". the vast majority of people could live happily on 6GB's per month, so 6GBs on the standard 2 week holiday far exceeds their needs (especially when they should be out enjoying themselves, and not stuck watching videos on their phone)!.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭dotsman

    Mr.S wrote: »
How is it far less data when abroad compared to the rest...it's far more no?
Because, I have ulimited data in Ireland compared to just 5GB with the equivalent plan with Vodafone. And when in EU, I have a gig more than I would with Vodafone; all for €10 less per month.
    Mr.S wrote: »
It's more then enough for you and I, but for others it's not. Roaming in Europe doesn't always mean going on holidays and watching videos :D!
But it's enough for the overwhelming majority of people. Yes, somebody who, for work, spends the bulk of their time abroad may need more, but that's very much the exception.
    Mr.S wrote: »
My original point is that if you need a high data allowance in Europe, then Vodafone is the best option - no other provider offers that. Obviously depends on your plan but the prepay offers are cheap.
But that is not "generous". For the vast majority of cases, Vodafone is ripping off their customers - charging far higher and offering far less. Yes, there are exceptions (as mentioned above), but for the average person, the last word I would use to describe Vodafone's offering is "generous".

Well yes, if you look at a **** Vodafone plan  eg there are the 20gb plans on Vodafone which are cheap and that's what my point was...........yikes.

    For €80 per month!!!

I think you're missing my point. The overwhelming majority of people don't require this. The overwhelming majority of people only need/use a few gigs abroad in a year (let alone per month).

And for those, exceptional people who do require regular huge data usage abroad, it's not down to vodafone's "generosity" as you put it, but they are charging people an extra €50 per month for the privilege.

Have been wondering about this one my self. Have seen a few places that even though Switzerland is not part of the EU, they honour this agreement. Am hoping due to all the negotiations to date, that we share a land border, and similar providers, well Three and Vodafone, that it stays.

Data roaming is a scandal and an extortion racket.

Years ago I used my iPhone whilst over in Holland staying at my sister's place and went online quite a few times and got stung for a whopping - and I mean whopping, bill when I got home. I was furious and reached an agreement with my service provider.

    Roaming is a scam.
