So, the EU have finally come good

Roaming in the EU is no more as of today... you can travel and use your phone as if at home.

I have an old contract and I am now in the funny position where I could sms someone when I am roaming for cheaper than when I am at home

My understanding was that the data roaming is still wishy-washy with only a certain amount of your package available.

Depends on the provider. My provider is not pulling any shenanigans, my data is my data whether I am at home or roaming and nothing changes. If you're provider is pulling a fast one, then change right away.

Three and Virgin Mobile have broken the EU Regulation and do not allow you to use your full data allowance within the EU. I'm sure others have too, I know Vodafone allow usage of full allowance.

meteor sent me a message (I'm on prepaid) and said that I can use 6gb of my data when i travel. I get 15gb with a €20 topup.

I'm with three and they have fully implemented the regulations for me.

I'm 100% sure that the regulator here that is Comreg will be coming down on operators that are non compliant like a tonne of bricks.

Sorry, wait this is Ireland where no one is accountable for anything. So fat chance of that, unless the EU decide to fine Ireland, little will be done.

Am already been able to do this since January OP. Unlimited minutes and texts back home, 10gb of data, and 100 international minutes and texts, just like at home.

Although with the UK coming out of the EU, am wary of not getting to used to it.

Depending on your provider and contract. Vodafone has had it on new sign ups and renewals since January.

To be fair, I'm with Three and my plan is unlimited units /data here but I've got nearly 9GB data EU roaming allowance in a given month. Plenty for me. I was away recently for a week and only managed to rack up 1 GB.

As much as I dislike the company and their non compliance, if I was going to fly to mainland Europe for a week to sit on the couch streaming Netflix, I'd just stay at home.

Virgin used "fair usage" excuse, so it's 30GB on unlimited package at home that is cut down to 5.5GB abroad and 1 cent per MB over 5.5GB.

Anyway, 5.5GB is plenty for me...

You need to check with them as it depends on your contract and your data allowance.

Basically, they will give you a certain amount of your data allowance to roam with in the EU .

For example, I'm on the monthly SIM-Only contract that gives me 'All You Can Eat' data here but I can use nearly 9 GB of that to roam with in the EU within a billing month.

The charges you highlight is the cost per MB when you exceed your allocated roaming allowance.

Google maps in Android works as a great sat nav in offline mode if you have set it up before you leave on your holiday!It has had this functionality since late 2015.

"All you can eat" is a bonus add-on for when in Ireland. I get the full allowance of my plan when abroad, which is both the minimum and maximum that every other provider offers.

Very generous. Vodafone would charge me an extra €10 per month for less data.

I am on the cheapest plan available and get 6GB. Anybody using more than 6GB while on holidays is simply not enjoying their holiday.

Networks have agreed limits with the EU regarding data in relation to how much can be used.

This is because networks charge each other €7.70 per gb for date used between networks.

So take your monthly spend excluding VAT, divide by the €7.70 and multiply by 2.

I am with Meteor for €25 a month.

So €25/123*100= €20.32=non vat spend.

€20.32/€.70=2.63

2.63*2= 5.27 and Meteor have allowed my 5.3gb of my 10gb monthly data allowance to use for roaming.

This will increase over time as the wholesale rate will drop again on January 1 and each year up to 2022 when it will be only â‚¬2.50 per gb.
