Hmmm, getting massive 'New' Nintendo 3DS and Wii U vibes from this.

As before, Nintendo marketing going to have to go into overdrive to explain to people that it is, in fact, a new console.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,218 ✭✭✭jj880

    Really?

On here we're more up to date than the average customer but surely "Switch 2" is clear enough.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,807 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Or explain what difference the 2 makes - to non-gaming parents for example. Those folks who don't watch Nintendo Directs. That it's not just Switch 1 + a bigger screen.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,143 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

One of the smart moves Sony has pulled with the Playstation is simple nomenclature. If people understand that the PS5 is not the same as the PS4 etc, I don't see why Switch 2 would be a problem.

If anything, it's a marked improvement on previous names like the ones you quoted.

    Not really.

'New Nintendo 3DS' could have been a new console or an update to an existing console. (it was just an update to the hardware, only Xenoblade was exclusive to it)

Wii U could have been an updated version of the Wii. A lot of people though it was and didn't buy one. 'Oh my kids already have a Wii'

Switch 2 could just be an update to the Switch with a bigger screen but with the same internal hardware. Parents will be asking if Switch 2 game will run on the Switch.

Yep, pretty much what I was getting at.

I think there's enough excitement and desire for an upgrade around this release that it'll do well and we won't see another Wii U, but you never know…

Good point, here's hoping that's the case.

I think I'm juse a little bit biased, in a world of Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4 (ad nauseum) I was hoping Nintendo would do their usual and be a bit more original. This announcement isn't exciting (IMO) in the slightest.

Ah well, probably still buy one on day 1!

They should have followed the Microsoft approach and called it the Switch Series U.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

"Poor" MS are such dopes with their naming conventions. Most sane people's eyes glaze over when you mention One, One X, Series X, Series S... basically they say "**** that" and get a PlayStation instead. They lose consumers at the very first step.

Agreed. Microsoft's XBOX branding is the pits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Cartridges/physical media, but specifically cartridges are the secret Nintendo success sauce that distinguish them from the others. Basically useless Lego bricks, but collectors and influencers provide free marketing and demand on the games and consoles forever because of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,313 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Nintendo's releases on Switch may be complete on cartridge. But 3rd parties are a completely different story. I've never experienced a generation worse on a Nintendo platform. So many are incomplete, "download required.

Even Capcom wouldn't shell out for a 4GB cartridge for the physical release on Switch in Europe, and that's just one of countless examples.

And I don't care what Nintendo says, the real reason TOTK is €70 is to cover the cost of them having to use a 32GB cartridge for the physical release. That just went over the 16GB lower threshold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭geotrig

yeah they should have just gone with nintendo dreamcast ,where the key feature is able to cast your screen !😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,304 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

Well it worked fine for PlayStation 1 to whatever number they're at now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Yes, not fully complete on cartridge but that doesn't stop them generating hype.

BTW, can the updates be placed on the external memory card ? And that then copied/backed up ... and placed in a different switch.

So, if my current switch dies, I just need the cartridge + updates on external card to resurrect the full game independently of access to Nintendo servers ... or is the update somehow tied to a device ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,218 ✭✭✭jj880

I suppose then the question must be asked what should Switch 2 have been called instead?

Agreed visually there may be some confusion. Maybe there'll be a big exclusive feature pushed (4k?) with "ONLY ON SWITCH 2" prominent in the promo.

I dunno. Hopefully by the time launch comes or Christmas even the non gaming parent will know to look for the number 2 on the box / dock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,935 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

In non Switch 2 news Nintendo Life have set up their own eShop to filter out all the shovelware infesting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Deku Deals is another good frontend to the Nintendo catalogue. You can set up email alerts on deals too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,391 ✭✭✭d22ontour

Looks like it might be up to 24 players going by the pics of the starting grid in that teaser.

For me all the cartridges do is make me trade in more to offset the steady price point the games are at on switch, for Steam, PS and Xbox I have a massive library of games are most are bought digitally and when I think the price point is reasonable ( also game sharing across these is easier so halving the price of games already).

My switch library has never gone beyond three physical games and 4 digital indies I have on the console, this will continue with the switch 2 id imagine.

First things first I'm in my 50s and we got a Nintendo Switch for the house at Christmas. I was a small time gamer a few decades ago and want to get back into it. But Jesus wept, Mario Cart is soooo over rated. I want a game that will challenge me in some way.

In the past I've played and enjoyed Medal of Honour, TW Golf, F1.

What would you recommend on thoe lines today and what physical shop, as opposed to online, stocks the best selections for the Switch these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,016 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

    CEX & Smyths.

Play Mario Kart 8 on the 200cc cups if you want to see how diabolical it can be as a single-player game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 919 ✭✭✭tommythecat

Would it be better to try and pre order this on the Nintendo site or Smyths when this launches?

4kwp South East facing PV System. 5.3kwh Weco battery. South Dublin City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,935 ✭✭✭sniper_samurai

Smyths. The Nintendo store is extremely poor with coping with high traffic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,369 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Hmmm responding to @Fletwick just can't seem to include the right message above.

Also, you can turn off all the power ups, configure them etc, so it's more of a pure arcade racing game rather than being smashed by a blue shell every time you are winning.

Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey are probably two great games to get started with, but they're not like the games you mentioned. There are plenty of first person shooters and racing games on Switch, but I don't really play those.

Metroid Prime remaster might scratch that fps itch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,218 ✭✭✭jj880

Anyone else getting tired of release date reveal headlines?

Then the article reveals its some time between April and September.

    Mamma Mia!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,143 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

Tbh we know that the "closer look" thing is in April, and the "hands on with Switch 2" events start a few days after that. Anything before then is almost certainly clickbait. Because (as can be seen from this thread alone) there's a lot of eyeballs (and thus ad impressions) from suggesting that you've got anything useful to say about Switch 2.

Yeah shoulda known better. I expected it to be narrowed down a bit further than from the April Nintendo Direct until September!! Extremely clickbaitesque.

Wonder is the rumour of $400 pricing for a bundle believable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,346 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

No shops left to trade in against the new console when it does drop, the world that ostracized me is gone. IYKYK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,218 ✭✭✭jj880

We'd be doing well for a bundle at 400.

    I predict 450 for Switch 2 + Mario Kart.

Astrobot is the most Nintendo game that isn't on a Nintendo, if you could peek over the games horizon I'm sure you could see Mario Odyssey in the distance!

    It's brilliant!

I wonder... what a great game it would be on a Nintendo platform, moving all the references over the Ninty IP.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,731 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Apparently Nintendo are spoiling the fun and blocking people from buying from the Japanese eshop with non-Japanese PayPal and credit cards.

Hopefully someone will figure a work around without having to resort to buying Japanese eshop credit for a premium

Nintendo are stopping Gold Points from March 25th. Shame, I really liked that system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,889 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Also seems the US site, at least, states the NSO vouchers can't be used on Switch 2 games. No update to the wording here yet.

Saw some say it's probably due to game prices increasing for Switch 2 releases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,351 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

That's a big shame. Worked out basically at 5% back for every digital purchase.

Did a fire alarm go off?

    Where did everyone go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,889 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Seems the only thing happening in the world of Nintendo at the moment is another Pokémon direct so nothing of interest there for me.

Then Xenoblade X in a few weeks.

Belated new years resolution to increase my physical activity from zero to some has begun. I've just started "playing" Ring Fit Adventure, my first attempt at improving my fitness since Wii Fit. *looks at neglected balance board under the telly stand*

Only doing it a couple of days but enjoying it so far, admittedly on easy level but I'm so out of shape I'm not pushing it.

Just to let folks know, I'm stepping back from modding duties after many years.

Thanks to all of the regulars who have made this forum what it is.

I'm sure the new Switch 2 era, that is about to dawn, will be an opportunity for this forum to go from strength to strength.

So, the very best of luck to you all, and thanks for the years of interesting and entertaining points, debates and opinions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,889 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Who was it that finally broke you? What was the last straw?

Seriously though thanks for your work and now you may be able to recover some of your sanity again.

No last straws here, just lots and lots of IRL things that take up lots of time.
I am lucky enough to be able to retire in two years time, one of the benefits of being a nurse in an Approved Centre, you can go at 55.
Perhaps then I will be able to spend more time hereabouts.
But, the odd blip aside, it has been a nice place to be, during the great times for Nintendo and the lean times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,263 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

I came into the HSE late so I'm going to have to keep plodding away to nearer 67, (hopefully not ALL the way to 67 though), enjoy your retirement when you finally get there, light at the end of the tunnel at least. Sorry to see you go as a mod and thanks for trying to keep interest in the place ticking over.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Thanks for all the enthusiasm on here @CiDeRmAn , I think Nintendo probably owe you a little pension at this stage. 😁

And yet, here I am, still giving them money, and Sony, and MS, and Steam, and loads more on retro gaming too!

I was playing Words with Friends earlier on my phone, and they have a Mar 10 Word Search for the day that's in it.
