I ment to clarify the Garda can make a demand for breath sample or alternatively a blood/urine sample. (S.12 of RTA 2010)

You can't refuse all 3 and if you did it would be considered a fail/refusal which carries same penalty as being over limit anyway

some people will say they have breathing issues as a way to get out of it so the alternative is blood/urine.
I know one guy who managed to sneak a piece of dirt from his shoe to his hand then into his mouth in a flash and spit it into the breathalyzer tube. The machine recognises stuff like that and he was done for fail/refusal and attempting to frustrate a prosecution and criminal damage

I bought one of these before Xmas avoids all the
guesswork. The new limits are just too risky to wing it.

Isn't the reading on that incorrect?
0.05 % is where penalties start for driving, 0.5 % and you would be in a coma!

That's what I thought at first, but there's another 0 on the % if you look at the image on the page again, the first time I used it I blew a 0.3% and some how figured I was six times over the limit, I still haven't been able to find the correct current legal limits online.

Just look at the blood alcohol level and covert to BAC %

For experienced drivers that are not professional drivers.

    50mg per 100ml of blood = 0.05% BAC (3 months ban/ 6 months if contested)
    80mg per 100ml of blood = 0.08% BAC (6 months ban/ 1 year if contested)
    100mg per 100ml of blood = 0.10% BAC (2 years ban)
    150mg per 100ml of blood = 0.15% BAC (3 year ban)

That's my understanding anyway, someone please correct if I'm wrong.

It says that page on citizens information was last updated in October 2018, I think new laws came into force again since then.
I've just been informed I'm still not reading it right that time I said I was .03% as I moved the 0, seemingly that's not what your meant to do. It means 1% of, so I was actually .055% so slightly over.
Maybe someone can clarify is citizens information correct and how do you read this correctly as there's a conversion required with the %oo

October 2018 was the latest update and they can't really go any lower without just making it zero tolerance, which is impractical where alcohol is legal to buy and consume.

That device is confusing, I don't understand why they can't use the standard measurement of % BAC

If it shows you should not drive at 0.5 I think that equals 0.05 % as this is the point where you are over the limit in Ireland and Scotland. England, Wales and NI is 0.08%

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,120 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

It showed 0.3% with the car crossed out so I assumed I was over the limit there's 3 settings and it's set for the one to cover UK and here. If you haven't had anything to drink it just says NIL.

    From the website
PRODUCT ACCURACY ±0.20‰BAC at the drink drive limit, that's probably why it said not to drive at .3%

Then on another page it says
    How accurate is AlcoSense™?
It is accurate to +/- 0.02% BAC (Blood Alcohol Content)

I have the older version of the elite.
0.5 bac on the device. Is 0.05 bac.
Why it is displayed that way i do not know.
Mine goes amber on the background lighting if caution is required i.e close to the limit and red if at or above. As well as the BAC number.
Read the manual it gives a great insight into how this whole breathalyser thing works.
Even the differences in the way different countries work out your bac.
0.3 is above the professional limit so maybe something in your settings?

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,120 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Ah maybe that's it, I was over the professional limit.

So for clarity a full license driver is 0.5 %

No, 0.05% BAC will result in a 6 month ban for a driver who is not a professional and has a full driving licence

Yes 0.05% BAC. 0.5 % would have you in a coma or dead
