Is gender just a load of cobblers?
In the current environment there seems to be an acceptance that if your mind says you are x or y them that's what you can identify as and society has to accept it. Under no circumstances can you question this or put forward the argument that this maybe be a mental health issue. I suppose what I cant get my head around is the following 2 scenarios
A person wants to identify as "gender fluid" - society has to accept this and change to accommodate this person
A person  has a uncontrollable desire to chop a limb off (Apotemnophilia) - society does not have to accommodate this as they have a mental disorder and should be treated

    whats the difference?

Gender fluid is a load of rubbish, unless hermaphrodite.

Ah Robert! You should have said it doesn't hold water! Go edit your post and I'll edit this one to remove the evidence.

I'm starting to question the mental health of people who get so worked up about what other people want to identify as... why the obsession?

But as long as it's not hurting anyone or getting in my way... have at it. Identify as all the things.

This seems like the perfect venue to tease out this complex subject in a rational way. I am confident we will all come to an agreement following a short, empathetic and well-researched discussion.

I don't know why people think I have a problem, will have to smite them...

I don't really understand why people get so upset about other people's gender identity, it has absolutely no impact on anyone else but the individual. I really think there is an element of latency in some bigotry expressed towards those that are non-binary or transgender.

It has an impact when some bloke in a dress tears into you for calling him, well..."him".

    Fcuk that nonsense.

To me saying that they're no Gender or saying more then 2 just opens up a can of worms and can come with its own dangers.

Im all for equality and people can choose how they feel, but I think we are going ott for such a small select few. Far more important things to worry about.

I think that most of humanity identifies that way. It's just that some don't admit it.

Akin to some during the Marriage Equality debate who kept talking about sexuality as a choice. If you see a choice, we've got some unpalatable news for you...

Sure, but I can't do much about plastic pollution in the Pacific or the nuclear threats from North Korea and the US.
But I can easily not be dick to someone who identifies as a gender that's not their sex. Doesn't cost me a thing.

I don't live in a world where I meet transgender people and I don't know anyone who does. It's amazing how much air time this stuff gets, as if we all work and hang out with the Caitlyn Jenners of this world. I'll be honest, I just think of them as really weird men, not that I give it much thought. Really weird men are all over the place, into really weird sh*t, these ones just want to reconstruct their bodies to look like women for some reason.

See? Society is tripping over its own feet trying to please everyone.

That and hoping you don't offend a thin-skin-kin.

Atheists don't care if you use religiously-derived language. Days of the week would be tricky otherwise.

I actually believe in gender dysphoria but there's not a snow's chance in hell that the amount of people we are currently seeing in the media (who are mostly transitioning from male to female) have the disorder. Of the genuine cases that I have seen in documentaries, these people oozed the gender they believed they truly were long before hormonal or surgical interventions.

One of the best examples that some people are just doing it for reasons which have nothing whatsoever to do with having a disorder of any kind, was when Ben Shapiro was sitting beside a woman in a debate on this issue that claimed she had been born in the wrong body, and after Ben gave his reasoning for why he didn't believe in transgenderism (citing genetics and other factors) she (in response to Ben saying to her "What are your genetics, Sir?") slowly turned to him and in a deep slow voice, and while menacing putting a hand around Ben's shoulder, said: "You cut that out now or you'll go home in an ambulance."

Yeah, nice to meet you Miss.

I think these are the "fluid" "non binary" lot. They pick the gender as it suits every 30 mins.

Nobody says to be a dick, but honestly in past 5 years I reckon I have seen no more then 5 people who cross dress be it in Gay Bar in Cork/Dublin or on the street.

They have as much rights as anyone, but the coverage it gets for such a select few is absurd.

Well you live on Planet Earth, you could well know a transgender person and not even know. And there are transgender men too.

Cross-dressing isn't what a transgender person is. Most likely you encounter transgender people and don't even realise it.

I suspect they get this much coverage because for some inexplicable reason it winds some people up so much.

There's far less women that want to be men than the other way around. Same way there's far more married men that dress up as women and suck d*ck at the weekends etc. Men seem to have a greater capacity to be oddballs. Generally speaking women don't seem to be into quite as weird sh*t as men.

Exactly. This is the kind of thing that most people don't care about. Naturally there will always be do gooders and do badders who if truth be told are probably just engaged in a battle to see who can outrage the other the most.

Oh come on Dr Cray, don't be coy about your feelings on homosexuals and trans people.

Absolute and utter lunacy if you ask me and seems to have exploded out of nowhere in recent years. Apparently there are over 60 different genders, where the hell did this line of thinking come from?

Gender studies being part of curriculum in the US colleges has no doubt added fuel to the fire.

What's worse is parents encouraging young children with this folly, I was on holidays last year and a German couple had their son wandering around in a dress because "he wanted to wear it".

We disagree on one point here- it's not inexplicable, but rather the wound-up don't like the explanation.

People piss and moan about how it's everywhere and can't be avoided, but in AH at least, the vast majority of the coverage comes from posters complaining about it.
