Beat poor Dublin and Offaly teams and Wexford were a lot weaker than everyone thought they were

Clare are staying very quite and they could be the darkhorses

Galway have done what Kilkenny did over the years, beat poor teams convincingly in Leinster. None of the Galway lads are too excited so it seems to be pundits who are talking up their credentials more than anyone.
Everyone in Galway knows the first real test is the semi final, but the way the team are playing does make a semi final look promising. We know Galway will turn up and put in a serious performance.

Clare beat a piss poor limerick team so I don't know how they're dark horses.

I think Galway made Wexford look weak to be honest. Especially in the 2nd half. Nobody thought they were weak when they were running the legs off Kilkenny a few weeks ago. Wexford will still be dodgy enough opponents for somebody in a quarter-final. I think Galway's physicality just wore them down but most teams they face won't be so physically imposing.

Plenty of talented hurlers and All Ireland winners in that Clare team and not much being said about them at all. Well capable of beating Cork on Sunday and if they don't, they won't fear anyone from the qualifiers in a quarter final.

Not a hope of that Kilkenny team making it through to the final from the qualifiers. There's just too many games for an average enough team. You might scrape past one or two but someone will find you out and it mightn't be pretty.

It's Galway's to lose this year. They were very hard done by in the semi-final last year, and did a classic Galway in the final the year before that. I'd be worried about meeting that Cork team in a final though.

There's the old-fashioned hurling style about Cork that is great to watch. Playing it along the ground, through the centre, natural sort throwing it over the bar.

That makes it even worse? The GAA need to ask themselves for what
purpose was Croke Park built for! I appreciate that they have to look at
all options but this time of the year is the hurling season.
    Only in ****ing Ireland!!!

You do understand the economics of actually running a stadium of that size, or do you think these costs should be added in to ticket prices, if anything there are too many games played in Croke Park as it is.
If the weather is bad at the weekend would the pitch not be in fairly bad shape by time the Munster final actually get's played? 2 senior qualifiers that could go to extra time and a minor match on before it.

The pitch in Thurles can take any amount of games, have never seen it even remottely cut up, no idea what they do to it but it is always immaculate.

I doubt Cork will allow us back in, yes we were unlucky in the drawn game but fair is fair :p

Incredible decision by the GAA to drag four counties to the tiny hamlet of Thurles for these games! What is wrong with Croke Park?

It's really only dragging Dublin there.

Yep, says it all about the Dublin mentality and awareness of national geography!

I thought this was a wind-up when I read it.

Is this the same Dublin that have home advantage for virtually every major championship game as well as football league finals?

It is also the same County Chairman that has shown nothing but absolute contempt for Hurling and its development in Dublin

Leinster teams voted to have these games in Croke Park. Of course they should be in Wexford Laois etc...

Home advantage for AI quarter finals, semi-finals and finals as well as league finals and Leinster finals. All of which has nothing to do with what Leinster teams voted for.

However, I don't believe it confers that big of an advantage in reality as Dublin would hammer most teams regardless of where it is played. It's the same with Tipperary and Semple Stadium.

All of these games are played in CP, which is what it is for. Doesn't matter who it is.

And point about other Leinster counties voting to keep Dublin in CP is also true. Dublin have played 38 times outside CP in Leinster since 1974 and lost once. So it doesn't even make a difference.

One hypocrite on LC even voted to have his own county surrender home advantage and then went whinging to local media about "the Dubs." :) Typical sleeveen bullcr@p.

And Semple Stadium is considered by many the home of hurling and is also what it is. Its only right that major games should be spread around the country and if they end up in Cork or Tipp where either of these counties are also playing, fair enough.

Dublin cannot seriously complain about this. They have been given every possible advantage and yet are still complaining.

I should add that Dublin playing in Croke Park probably gives them negligible advantage. What gives them far greater advantage is a huge population and financial resources. They are the Real Madrid or PSG of the Irish GAA scene and most other counties cannot hope to compete with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

I said earlier that doesn't matter where we play them, almost certainly be only one outcome. Could be on the moon! And yes Thurles is traditional place for big games, just as CP is. Fact that the two places happen to be in homelands of two of the big powers is unfortunate, but such is life.

There is certainly a case for taking Dublin footballers out of CP which has happened last twice now but that is not Dublin's call. Didn't even vote on LC some years and never objected when it was decided to move. Fact is all of the suits like to see the tills ticking over.

You left out the part where the Leinster Council CEO threatened other counties with cuts in funding if the Dublin footballers were taken out of Croke Park.

He didn't "threaten" them, he pointed out the financial implications. Since then LC have made executive decisions to have Dublin play in Kilkenny and Portlaoise. Financial implications are no longer as big as there is no longer much of a difference to the crowd Dublin will bring to Kilkenny and to CP for early LFC games. Days of full houses for Leinster games are long gone until your own chaps or Kildare throw a shape.

    And before that?

And why was Dublins Semi Final played alone in Croke Park. Should have been a double header or both played outside

If Waterford drew Tipp they'd have played them in Thurles, probably have been a toss if Kilkenny drew them.

Westmeath came down to Thurles and put it up to Tipp, Cork came down and beat them as did Limerick 3 years ago. Deal with it.

Ii know a hell of a lot more that you about it by the sounds of it!!

I am heavily involved in club hurling in Dublin and the county board couldn't give two fcuks about hurling, you are aware that there is a full round of club fixtures this weekend in Dublin, has that ever happened for football, like hell it has!

John Bailey was the last chairman that actually gave a monkeys about hurling and actually allocated resources to it, of course as a result he became incredibly unpopular among the football fraternity and was blamed for the poor for of the footballers at the time.

And if you don't believe me, read any of the many extracts from Anthony Daly where he describes the absolute disdain the hurlers were treated with by the county board.

Remember Waterford refused to play Tipp in last years Munster final in Thurles.
    It was played in Limerick.

Dangan, Seán Shanley is from Craobh which as you know is mainly a hurling club. I have no doubt there are people in high position within Dublin who do not like hurling but Shanley is certainly not one of them.

They would have been far better off playing it in Thurles. They took a battering in Limerick which is a pitch they know little about. Waterford are practically home in Thurles just as Kildare are in Dublin

Thats because they have no home and away agreement and they agreed to play them the year before in Thurles, the game would be fixed for Limerick by default. Much was made of Tipps "home advantage" being worth a few points, which when it comes to Waterford in Thurles I don't really buy. They actually accomodated it in 2015 so lets get our facts right here.

And on the basis of the two outings, I don't doubt they'd go back to Thurles without any qualms to pkay Tipp again, although they won't have to once Pairx Ui Caoimh opens.

Of all the Munster teams Tipp actually like playing in Limerick it's almost a second home venue to them. Waterford would have been better off playing in Thurles where they are comfortable

Don't think a bit of grass and concrete matters too much if you lose the game by a cricket score in the end(Waterford playing in Limerick over Thurles).

I wasn't getting at Shanley personally and I know he is a hurling man, but the impression I get is that his hands are pretty much tied, alot of politics involved at that level and I'm sure as part of the voting 'agreements' that got him the gig there were pretty strict conditions attached.

It's not a personality or individual problem, the reality is that Hurling will always play second fiddle in Dublin and of course that is their perogative but I find it rather ironic when they then cry foul about the injustices inflicted on their hurlers.

Do you not find it strange and very convenient that there wasn't a mig out if anyone from Dublin until the next day and tickets were already sold so nothing could be done, my own opinion is that this was a statement made to affect any future decisions and had very little to do with the incident at hand, a bit like the Connolly incident and Gavin trying to influence future decisions.
