Not surprised - he has put his life on hold by taking a leave of absence from his teaching job.

Not sure about the comments from Babs Keating this morning saying in a newspaper piece that McGrath should resign if Waterford lost.

Disappointed with Babs Keating really disrespectful to Derek McGrath

I think Derek might go as it's really affecting his working life

When Bab's opens his mouth there is only one thing guaranteed and that's that there is going to be a smell of sh1te.

Such an awful pity Babs sullies his reputation with this sh1te.

EDIT: having read the article in question though im fully in agreement with him about the sweeper system. Such a negative system that screams one loud message, 'We are terrified of taking a hiding here'. The whole system is based on fear. It must be soul destroying seeing a ball cleared and only two men inside the final third. Having an extra back is worth sweet f*ck all if you cant get scores. Surely to god Waterford have a pool of players that would allow them to abandon this crap?

Gearoid McInerney has been named The Sunday Game hurler of the year. It was an unanimous decision from all the pundits (Cummins, Daly, Brennan, Farrell, Tyrell, Mulcahy & Duignan).

Well done to him, he's been superb. I don't think Galway would have won the AI without him performing so well.

Well deserved, crucial to Galways success this year.

Did he get MOTM for today also?

The exact same thing was said about Tipp this time last year. To early to make calls like that.

Well it's always going to be too early to make calls like that. What I'm saying is Galway have the look of a side that won't drop in consistency. Of course, anything can happen and they might not win another trophy. But I feel that this side is good enough to win more All Irelands.

Can't agree with this at all. Sweeper stwsten has gotten Waterford to two semi finals and one final, all lost by small margins. Similar to what the team of the 00s did if not better. Scoring averages from this team would be above most of the last decade. To the spectator, it might look negative. But what is negative? Is it playing defensively? As I said they score more than almost ever other team, so it probably isn't defensive.

Should they play 15 on 15 like every other team has for 100 years and have Kilkenny, cork and Tipp win 90% of the All Irelands? I say no, I say try something different, try to out manouver these teams because it won't be done by just going for it.

I love to see teams try something different, it's what sport is all about. There's rules there, and as long as you play within them anything is fair game for me. Sure, you might not win the All Ireland. But will any Waterford person, be it player or supporter, be hugely disappointed today looking back in years to come? It was a great experience, and they have potential to be back.

    ,

but waterford had the hurlers to draw or win that game today,

it's the same as chess or rugby or poker,

    aggression wins

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. A Waterford team with Ken McGrath, Tony Browne, Dan Shanahan, John Mullane and many other great hurlers never won an All Ireland. Who's to say they would it they wouldn't have by trying a different style play? We'll never know, but I have to commend Derek McGrath and the players for trying something different.

Well its not really something different is it? They've persisted with this system for four years now and its yielded them one league title. Last year they were hammered in a Munster final. If you need a man standing next to your fullback it doesn't say alot about your fullback and you are losing an attacking option to hit it upfield to.

Im puzzled when people say suits Waterford....it hasnt really in terms of winning the big prizes. They havent won Munster, they havent won an all ireland, but they've negated a goal threat to a degree.

Trying something new is fine but when its not working then its time to try a different method. I think Waterford have better hurlers then Derek gives them credit for. If he has no faith in Coughlan full back then why not try another option there? Surely Tadhg de burca could do this role?

Amazing day. Just coming back home from several long hours boozing around the town - fairly drunk - so this sh*ts for real. It's a great night in Galway. People everywhere, positivity everywhere. We didn't think we'd see these days, after what felt like innumerable losses to the machine that was Kilkenney. 29 long years. Today was deliverance. The sight of Joe Canning stood with the family of Tony Keady choked me up. Galway hurling has been pain and hurt for as long as I can remember - today felt long and well deserved.

We love you boys. You give everything to bring us, who scarcely deserve it, days like today, what heroes you are. Profound thanks, from the bottom of my heart.

Commiserations to Waterford. I wish it hadn't been you that Galway had to beat to do it. My favourite GAA side of all time was that Waterford team of the noughties who played swashbuckling hurling with helmetless heroes and whose passion couldn't be denied - sorry guys I hope the day will come for you.

Well I would say they've played this system for 3 years. Year one, competitive with Kilkenny in semi final. Year two, take Kilkenny to a replay and a few inches from winning/drawing that really. Year three, beaten in the final by a very good Galway team. That to me is progress, every year, and if team keeps progressing every year it can only be a good thing.

They might never win an All Ireland under McGrath, but only one team can win the All Ireland every year. And to be in the mix for the All Ireland, consistently for a few years is more than Waterford have had for most of their history.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone ever used GAA Go with a VPN? I think I can ask that.
I don't understand why you would need a VPN to work gaago in Britain. It's legally available in Britain, what's the issue?

Sorry I've just seen this. Yes, GAA Go is available in the UK but the AI final is not available on it.

I wouldn't see TDB as a full back to be honest, Conor Gleeson made for the job.

Great to see Galway get to 5 titles, with huge underage talent very much primed to go on now and dominate over the next few years.

Brilliant day in croker, so proud to be a Galway man yesterday. They finally reached the promised land after so many years of failure.

On the game itself I genuinely thought Galway were 10 points the better team but we just couldn't seem to get away from them. Comfortably the best team in Ireland all year and got the just rewards yesterday.

Surely no one has ever deserved an all Ireland more than Joe, just delighted for him, he must have thought it'd never happen. Brilliant performance from him too. Without question the best hurler I've ever seen and would have been a travesty if he ended up without the medal. He'll be hurler of the year now too to cap it off and deservedly so.

Very hard to win an All Ireland back to back, Kilkenny were just on a different planet.

    Cracking championship awaits next Summer

Barron will be hurler of the year I think. He is a fabulous hurler. Covered every blade yesterday too.

Great win for Galway. It's still hard to believe.

Waterford missed several shots and frees at crucial times and that was the difference.

It was a curios game in many ways and to tell the truth I don't think Waterford truly ever looked or perhaps believed they could win. Had they not gotten those two ridiculously soft goals, I think Galway would have won at a canter.

Galway deserved it yesterday, no question about that.

I think the love in with Joe Canning is very over the top though. Particularly with the media. Barron was the standout player in the Championship and deserves to be rewarded for it. Canning wouldn't even be nominated if Galway were beaten yesterday and there were better players on the pitch yesterday too. Barron deserves it as he has been the best player all year, but whether he'll get it remains to be seen.
