    Lol. Fair cop!

I'm just making the point (again) that these things all depend entirely on perspective. The calls that went against Munster weren't nearly as heinous as they're being made out to be.

    Hyperbolic nonsense.

POM got flipped and every reason to question that it was only a yellow ..not seeing that thru red eyes.
Conway getting slid into with both feet...no penalty... again...it was wrong in most same people's eyes.

Seems that the only people overblowing it are the ones using words like heinous, yeah?

    It happens all the time.
Referee misses something in real time, asks the TMO if ball was grounded or go back for penalty, TMO answers that ball was knocked on, no effort by TMO to point out the contact, and referee continues on with going back for the penalty.

On one hand it does speed up the game if the TMO just answers what he's asked, but on the other if the TMO had shown the initiative to play back the footage for the referee whilst pointing out that the defender slid in legs first and made contact with his legs on the attacking player in the act of gathering the ball then I think there was a good chance that the penalty would have been brought forward to 5 yards out, or indeed if the ref thought it was illegally affecting/preventing an effort of a try then the ref could have given a penalty try there.

I think Barnes was too quick to move on there, but to be fair to him, there is always a pressure on the ref to keep the match flowing as much as possible.

Whatever about the slide, the shoulder drop (on Conway after ball was dead during the same incident) and the gouging are things that should have been looked at immediately.

There may be pressure on to keep the game flowing, but last week it was checked to see if the ball was carried back before being dotted down after the Castres player kicked it at POM on their penalty, likewise they checked if Murray knocked the ball on behind his line. Both correct decisions in the end and both worth checking. Flow and time that a match takes are important, but correct decisions / complete picture to make a decision are too.

    🤪

I could not understand why he would not have checked on the gouging at the time ! Not much use for Munster having him banned for the last 2 pool games if he is found guilty.

Injury list slowly going down with Dan Goggin and Darren Sweetnam back to team training this week.

The Munster squad returned to training at the High Performance Centre in Limerick today ahead of Friday’s Guinness PRO14 Interpro derby against Ulster in Belfast.
The Munster Rugby Medical Department have issued the below update following the weekend’s defeat to Castres in France.

There were no new injuries reported following Saturday’s Champions Cup game at Stade Pierre-Fabre.

Brian Scott suffered a foot injury while playing for Cork Constitution in the All Ireland League on Saturday and will undergo a scan today to assess the extent of his injury.

Dan Goggin and Darren Sweetnam will reintegrate into team training this week.

The following are progressing with rehabilitation: James Cronin (leg) Rhys Marshall (hamstring), Jack O’Donoghue (knee), Dave O’Callaghan (foot), James Hart (knee), Chris Farrell (thigh).

Your lack of perspective is readily visible in that case.

Hopefully Goggin can continue the vein of form he was in prior to his injury. Was really playing some great stuff.

    https://munsterrugby.ie/2018/12/17/86435-munster-ulster-squad-update/

    I'd go for:

Loughman, KOB, Archer, Kleyn, Wycherley, Botha, Oliver, Stander
Mathewson, Johnston, Nash, Bleyendaal, Daly, Wootton, JJH

Sherry, LOC, Parker, DOS, TOD, Williams, Taute, Fitzgerald

Injured: Marshall, Cronin, Scott (tbc), JOD, DOC, Hart, Farrell
Rested: N Scannell, Kilcoyne, Ryan, Beirne, Cloete, Murray, Carbery, R Scannell, Arnold, Earls, Conway, Haley

Munster have named strong sides this season when I didn't expect them to but it would really buck a trend if we saw anything close to a full team go to Belfast. Stander might possibly travel as he was rested versus Edinburgh.
By the sounds of it Goggin and Sweetnam won't make it back for Friday.

Stander along with the rest of the internationals will be in camp Joe

I see. Well I suppose you can put TOD at 6 and Botha at 8.

Loughman, KOB, Archer, Kleyn, Wycherley, TOD, Oliver, Botha
Mathewson, Johnston, Nash, Bleyendaal, Daly, Wootton, JJH

Sherry, LOC, Parker, DOS, Coombes, Williams, Taute, Fitzgerald

Big time. Farrell is luckless. Hopefully he can break the injury curse as he did in Grenoble. If he hadn't had injury problems years ago he'd probably still be at Ulster.
The positive is Goggin will be back available soon to add depth and competition.

The no-arm, off-the-ball, above-the-horizontal tackle on POM was a textbook red. Each of those aspects of the tackle alone warranted a yellow.

Surely POM milked that in the same way Fraser Brown milked a red for Keith Earls 2 years ago?

Since others were mentioning the guy, I did see TRK is using MOLF's as a noun, quite amusing I thought

They publicly announce all citings together. They can contact the player/club directly within the 48 hours.

We won't know for sure until later tomorrow afternoon.

Understood, sorry, but I meant that they have 50 hours from the start of the game... there's less than an hour to go...I don't expect anything to be announced at all

Henderson's injury is highly suspicious in it's timing - is he just avoiding a showdown with Beirne by opting for surgery right before the weekend???

Ah come on, that's mad conspiracy stuff. I wouldn't let the Ulster lads see this, the build up thread could get very testy.

Is it Munster Or Leinster Fan?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,766 Mod ✭✭✭✭mossym

    It's Munster obsessed Leinster fan.

And if any proof of the existence of such( or it's counterpart the LOMF) is needed, just read the rugby forum here on boards. The last few posts of each thread, including this one, usually enough

    Is that a serious question?
POM was effectively tumbled in the air, he had no control over the landing at all.

If anything Conway could have potentially "milked" the shoulder like Brown did (I can't recall Brown milking it though).

The MOLF types generally don't last long on here so I wouldn't apply that label to long term posters.

Anyway, moving on from the Castres game and game thread....

    Three tough games over Christmas

Ulster (A) on the 21st. minus the internationals

Leinster (H) on the 29th/ (minus the internationals?)

Connacht (A) on the 5th of Jan. (6 days before away to Glaws)

With Connacht being in our conference and only 4 points behind us that is probably the most important game over the holidays in terms of conference position.

Ulster in a good run of form at the moment so a tricky game there.

Leinster regardless of what players they send down will be a massive challenge

and then Connacht away with both teams having an eye on Europe the following week will be tough

Would be delighted with two wins out of the three

Ideally we would not let Glasgow pull any anymore from us at the top of the group, they're 7 points ahead of us at the moment

and play Edinburgh twice and a tricky trip to Benneton over the holidays, so looking for some results to go our way there

Really need to win the group in order to avoid an away SF against Leinster, assuming we win the QF

Think it could be a very rough few weeks for Munster. Have to travel up to ulster without internationals to play against a team in good form and will be gunning for revenge after earlier in the season.

Leinster will always be a tough game as mentioned above.

Then away to Connacht with 6 day turn around before massive European match where as Connacht can roseate in Europe. Connacht would probably target the Munster match more than Europe as beating Munster would more than likely mean overtaking them in the conference.

Could see Munster coming out of the next few matches with very little points

Ulster won't have their internationals either and as we all know there is no real strength in depth when those guys have gone. I will be happy with a decent performance but don't expect a win.

The Scarlets were a shadow of the side we saw over the last 2 seasons and Ulster have beaten them 3 times this season yet got stuffed in the other game at Parc Y Empty. Apart from hoking them, the other results are not really encouraging. A lot of scratching and scrabbling for wins. It was this time last season when the wheels came off the wagon. Up to Christmas things had been o.k.

The feel good factor a.t.m. might amount to papering over the cracks but at least a start has been made to repairing them at Ulster. It will take more than this season.

Actually this will be an interesting game from the point of view of seeing where the Ulster side are at, Munster are a good measuring yardstick for this.
