You have to assume that they were prepared to take a hit on the phones, to keep their roaming rates. Thats where the money must be.

I wonder now though, since the EU has now said Three can't get away with the EU roaming loophole, how they can recoup this loss so easily? Let's say they got 500 cancels with average 300 Euro handset each (wholesale) - that's 150K Euro alone. Factor in the lost guaranteed contract income - 500 x 12 months x 40 euro = 250K. So basically around 400K lost overnight from the next 12 months forecasted income spreadsheet. I'd be thinking they're more likely looking at a larger loss based on the 800+ posts here.

Sounds more like a backfiring and miscalculated feck up to me. Even though the parent company, Hutchinson, wouldn't even notice this mere speck of money lost, someone will probably lose their job over it anyhow...

500 cancels? Someone said at one stage there were 500 calls in the queue alone, with a 90 minute waiting time. I'd say Three are taking a monstrous, miscalculated hit on this. I'd say Meteor/Eir are re-thinking their intention to change the roaming as well.

Please read the other 50 plus pages of this thread before jumping in.

Three are allowing people to keep and unlock almost new phones.

That's nice. My contract ran up last August and my xperia z3 was well paid off by then. 3 completely screwed me by giving me the incorrect unlocking code three times leaving the phone hardlocked to their network. It was the final insult of many from them, I was happy with 02 and once they took over I had nothing but problems, regularly over charged on my bill and countless arguments on the phone before they conceded that they were to blame.
Awful company to deal with, now I'm with virgin piggybacking their network for a fraction of the price, although I had to buy a new phone, I'd never go back to 3,if they're losing business because of their price increase I have no sympathy for them.

True, I just used that 500 as a guide to get a figure to show how much it cost. Like I said - it's probably very much higher. Neither of us actually know.
These would have to be cancellations only mind, not people moving to PAYG or 30 day SIM only or whatever - which still give Three some sort of revenue.

They are. Both them and 3 have been called out on it.

Hows your experience with Virgin? Customer care wise, signal wise etc. I know they piggy back off three, but my sim is due monday :p

Are the other phone companies expected to increase their prices too? I've 2 bill pay phones with Tesco with over a year left on each, and would love to get out of it.

Three are stuck in particular because the EU law means they would have to supply ACYE data in Europe which would hit them significantly financially.

The price increase is just normal BAU because of their market position after taking over O2. But it's the changes in the data allowance that is driving this.

So it's difficult to say whether any other operator will follow suit if they can bear the brunt of subbing a limited data package on the basis that you might just use so many Gb abroad on a two week holiday.

To be fair, anyone here who has canceled has had little issue with them. Many have stuck with them going on SIM plans and when they want a new phone will simply go back on contract.

The idea that there should never be a price increase is just silly. People are just taking advantage of this because of the convenience of getting out of contract.

At the end of the day nobody can beat them when it comes to serious data use.

Hi, I'm considering cancelling and moving to Sim only 30 day.
Does anyone know what happens at upgrade time?
Are Sim only customers even eligible for upgrades? I can't find any info online.
    Thanks a mil

I was a little apprehensive to be honest but I've had no complaints at all. I've had occasion to call customer care once and wasn't given the run around that 3 gave me, although I never had those problems with 02 either.
The signal is great, haven't had any problems and the 4G signal is typically strong pretty much all of the time.

Yes, you can upgrade if you want. I got a new HTC 10 out of this so the Sim only plan is the best deal for me. If you need a new phone I'd wait a bit. The newer phones are coming out soon.

The whole point of sim only is that you don't get a phone, that's why it's cheaper!

3's upgrades were usually no better than the deals for a new customer anyway.

Does anybody know if the former O2 customer's bills will be increasing anytime soon in line with the rest of the increases?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 264 ✭✭Twiggy69

    FYI
I don't know if this point has already been covered, but I am a former O2 customer, and this offer to change does NOT apply to us, nor is it likely to be, according to the guy I spoke to. I had a 40 minute wait ON HOLD this morning. Better than the 90 minute wait on Saturday, with no reply.
I also have a Pay as you go card, Top up €20 per month. This gives me unlimited tethering. That has been changed from 30 days, to 28 days, so it means one extra payment per year, and it does not allow free calls to other networks, now I will be using my €20 Credit to make any calls. Hope this clarification helps some else and saves them ages left On Hold

    Have a good day,

    Conor

    Thanks Conor,

I have my PAYG set up top up from my credit card once per month, Do I need to contact 3 to adjust this to every 28 days (can they actually do this ?? I know there was an issue here on boards previously where an account was being topped up once per month but some months having 31 days meant your benefits could lapse for one day).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Foxx92

Have tried the free phone number on Fri,Sat yesterday and this morning and no luck getting through to anyone yet alone on hold. Any other way of moving to PAYG from Bill pay?

Three claim to be changing this so their automatic top up works every 28 days. So you'll probably need to log on to My3 to change this when the service changes.

What the benefit of auto top up after 28days apart from convenience , how long does it take to burn the 20 euro credit left on the account and top up when required ? I dont expect to use much of the top up myself just data.

Does anyone know if it's possible to cancel my contract by email or live chat ? Can get through to this crowd at all.

Its the data that will rip through the credit quickly. Not sure of the costs per Mb at the moment but I've gone through 40€ credit without realising i was out of the bundle. You're best off to just do it every 28 days automatically and if you want to use up some of your credit you can buy a bundle. Like 500 Mb for 5€. Again not sure of the costs but you should really not use data on PAYG outside of the free 28 days or a data bundle.

After 6 years with 3 I've cancelled, got threw after 30 mins, excellent staff, explaining all my options and actually advised me to take the €30 30 day rolling contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,299 ✭✭✭F34

To those who moved to the 30 day sim only option were you moved straight away or is it taking effect from your next billing cycle?
