There’s not going to be a tunnel because it just isn’t needed and basically also because this is Ireland not Norway. There isn’t enough room in the constrained space for the portals and gradients and we don’t have a trillion dollars in a sovereign wealth fund. Our tunnel projects need to pass a more stringent CBA than Norway’s probably do.

The Norwegians wouldn't consider a tunnel under the Lee in this situation either and that's nothing to do with cost, it just makes no sense at all. If there was to be a case made for a tunnel in Cork, it would surely have to be on the eastern or western side of the city given the proposals on both sides are controversial and a bit crap tbh.

It's about 350m from the proposed bridge to the Collins and DeValera bridges. All I ever really see behind that point are trawlers in bad weather which could be facilitated elsewhere, goods ships which are going downriver, and the odd small cruise or naval ship which could be nicely accommodated at a newly updated Tivoli. Rowing clubs unaffected.

This is not at all about access to the river, it's about a certain councilor wanting to keep the riffraff who use public transport away from his constituents.

If I'm honest the first thing I thought of when I heard all of this was…what about the proposed Eastern Gateway Bridge?

It's worth considering the submissions/complaints and accommodating the affected people but it really doesn't look like many people are affected in a meaningful way. I'd feel differently about it if there weren't a load of bridges a couple of hundred metres away.

Wasn't there already big banners put up against that?

I never saw those, where were you seeing that?

There were banners put on the new(er) bridge over the railway to the houses in Tivoli earlier this year. Something along the lines of "save our river" and "no motorway bridge"
