I get a sense of industrial espionage here - RTE must have a double agent as the head of Today FM.

I can see them in Montrose now popping the champagne corks - "look at the state our main competitor has put themselves in".

It didn't matter who it was the thread would have still had I'm switching off etc

ah there were plenty of people I'm sure many would be happyish with, but sure there would always be a few who would be happy with no one.

Very hard to follow on from Anton in fairness

What an underwhelming announcement. Another nail slammed hard into the TodayFM coffin by Keith McCormack the CEO, this is going to be car crash radio.

Disappointing that there's no female, but if I had to pick between Muireann or Paula I'd vote for a needle in my ear. Maybe Porter could bring an old hand like Tara Duggan or someone along with him. Weren't Today FM looking for a roving reporter recently?

Porter was dreadful when he played second fiddle to the "hilarious" Uncle Colm Hayes. When those guys got together the discomfort level was so bad you could nearly hear Hayes muscles tense up on air, but I reckon on his own, with the right producer, he could be a very good signing for Today FM.

He was excellent when he appeared on Brendan O'Connor's TV show - well up to speed on current and cultural affairs. I would imagine his music taste will be one of totally embracing the 'now' playlist of ****e that Today FM have been pedelling, but aside from that he could be great. He's royally ****ed up his chances of having an RTE tv show for the next few years but I suspect a heft Denis O'Brien paycheck will ease that pain. Good on him.

And he'll be splitting time between here and the UK...he's developing shows for BBC1 and doing stand up...surely appointing someone who will put their all into the show and for that show to be their main job would make more sense...

No one was good enough for this thread it seems.

To be fair, if you read back through the thread, there were loads of possibilities which were suggested which some people here would have greeted with some positiveness. Yeah, you were always going to have people who were going to say it was the worst decision ever and that they were going to saw off their ears in protest and burn the house down to destroy the radio, it's an internet forum.

I think it's telling that Al Porter's name was never even mentioned in the thread prior to IUA14's post though...

Initial reaction on Facebook is mixed, a lot of people pretty positive about the appointment.

I'll probably give it a go, but I didn't like Porter on 2FM, so I can't see my opinion of him changing much.

I actually don't mind Al Porter (he has his funny moments) but I don't think I'd listen to an entire show. It depends on how he plays it.

But there are far too many people who won't even give him a chance for it to work out.

Its no longer Today FM its Man FM - not a female presenter in sight unless you're up at 6am or listening to radio after 7pm.

I shall burn my bra in protest.

Apologies if someone has covered this previously as this article came out yesterday.

    From the Irish Times:
The last set of radio ratings showed that it had lost 56,000 listeners over the 12 months to the end of September
Communicorp’s Newstalk raised an uncomfortable prospect - the possibility that Today FM and Newstalk may yet go their separate ways

Never seen his comedy but I'll give it a chance before making any judgement.

Hes's the Irish version of Alan Carr, a poor version (and I find Alan unfunny)

Is he gonna be doing his Al shtick or is he gonna be normal and be himself? One is less unbearable than the other

Lot of the FB comments ive seen are negative, people are quitting listening and a few feminists are complaining its a man again (suppose its a diversity choice)...looks like today FM is unlistenable from 12-4.30 pm now

I afforded Darcy the chance of listening for a bit and I'll do the same with Porter but I'll be on the look out for alternatives for sure.

This issue I have is that Al Porter has seriously little experience at national radio.

Yes, I know he's filled in from time to time but surely there are more qualified and experienced radio people out there.

It feels that todayfm are following 2fm's mistake of getting people in just because of there celebrity status. Yes, it might work initially, but not in the longer term.

So, this is what it takes to get into radio nowadays? Be a comedian, a former member of a dire boyband, or a minor celeb of some sort. Genuine talent are being overlooked!

It's bad form by Today FM, who recently advertised School Of Radio for those with a genuine interest in getting into the radio business. So, instead of hiring someone with a genuine passion for radio and music, they hire someone like Al Porter. Today FM has fast become a shadow of its former self!

the todayfm school of radio is only a revenue stream, a lot of the smaller stations do it, they advertise their on air talent as being the teachers but they rarely turn up, its a sad sign for radio when as you say you have to be a clown or an ex boyband member whilst the real talent dont get a chance, is alan kavanagh really interested in being a radio presenter? no he isnt, he just sees it as a way to promote himself even further whilst a really good guy or gal with bags of potential gets stuck spinning club classics at 2 in the morning on a sunday night, todayfm has all the hall marks of a station panicking and doing stupid things, if 2fm get their act together now they will destroy todayfm

Its only a matter of time before they get rid of Ian Dempsey and Cooper.

Research shows that people don't like listening to women DJs. Women especially don't like listening to women DJs.

Thanks christ Muireann didn't get it..the more she is on the more she sounds like a dj on college radio for a rural IT or PLC college.
She seems to think that SHOUTING makes you interesting and hilarious.

and the female presenter they had, Louise Duffy, ratings tanked iirc

I enjoyed listening to Louise, but i felt she needed a side kick. She needed someone like Anne with her as a co host.

I'd say unlistenable from 6am-4.30pm to be honest.

She's not awful now, seems to have more freedom in the music choice and her inane chatter/"bantz" is greatly decreased.....I Think she was put into the wrong positition at the time

So does that mean that Al Porter has given up on the stand-up, or does it mean that as soon as he has another show to tour with Today FM will be looking for another presenter for the slot? It's one thing Neil Delamare doing a weekend slot, he still has plenty of time to do shows if he wants to, but having a daily show will seriously reduce Porter's time for touring.

if muireann go rid of lenny guy and got someone in good with her she could be good. seeing them on tv defo herself and foley would be excellent together on radio.
