    7 people taken to hospital.

A person on CNN said they saw a person very much dead, which CNN were quick to say they could not verify.

Some of these Universities in the US are bigger than some Irish cities.

Misinformation is widespread in these situations.
Everyone knows everything, police and people there know nothing.

I think the scary/sad thing is these shootings aren't shocking news anymore.

Read earlier that there was 61 people shot over the weekend in Chicago alone.

The US has a major gun problem.

More guns will solve this problem, or something.

I get the "Run" part of the instruction, I also get the "Hide" part of it.
By why are the telling them to "Fight"?
If they had said "fight for you life"......maybe
But are they instructing these kids to fight the gunman? Certainly could be taken up like that by scared students

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 531 ✭✭✭midnight city

It's barely news anymore they are so common over there.

    That's the whole idea ,
Id rather fight than sit there and wait to be executed ,
But there could be off duty law enforcement officers there or people with concealed carry permits for forearms on the campus

Bloody hell. They must be big, dangerous forearms.

BBC report a suspect* is dead, 9 people injured.

I do not know if there is more than one.

Most are reporting "Run, hide, fight" but reading on breaking news Ireland and it's "Run, hide, fight as a last resort".

Can't even begin to imagine how I'd react in that situation :(

I'm going to assume it's if you're in a situation where you're absolutely going to get shot, there's nowhere to run or hide - try to fight. I guess their way of putting it is more succinct, but I think if I was in that situation, I wouldn't be parsing the sentence for whether it was advice or instruction.

"Run Hide Fight" is an abbreviation of the full instructions:

I believe the full thing is covered in intro/safety classes on arrival.

What makes it worse is that they use the word "when", not "if"

It's pretty sad that part of the "run" instruction is to "keep your hands visible". That is, police are going to shoot anyone who looks remotely dangerous, so if you don't make it clear you're sh1tting your pants, you might get shot by the cops.
What makes it worse is that they use the word "when", not "if"
I think the purpose is to get it clear in their heads that an active shooter is going to be indiscriminate. If you plead for your life or cower in the corner, you're going to die anyway. So "when" you're cornered by the shooter, fight back, don't hesitate.

In a way they're saying, "You'll still probably die, but you might slow him down long enough to save someone else".

But I agree that it's sad protocols and "best practice" classes exist for this kind of thing at all.

I was thinking more of the one at the top of the page, "When an active shooter is in your vicinity". Like it's an inevitability, and just a matter of time

And I'd rather that my teenage child who attends there to live into ripe old age and ignore ridiculous instructions.
Why the f*ck would armed, body suited, trained police officers tell scared, unarmed kids to fight???

It was already explained... if you're cornered and have no other choice, fight. Why cower in a corner? If you can, try to fight. Most probably wouldn't be able to as you'd be scared stiff... literally, but if you can, do.

in fairness, the advice to fight is offered as a last resort. in practice most people are too frightened to act coherently

when faced with a shooter , you have two opportunities , one from a position of surprise, the other on a reload event.

A position of surprise is difficult to achieve and a reload event can be hard to judge unless you have specific weapons training and have a understanding of the ammunition position of the shooter

weapons that reach over a distance are obviously useful, weapons that require you to close on the shooter are problematic

the key thing is that you must disable the shooter when you fight. otherwise presenting a non aggressive posture may on fact be better

    its hard to know

indeed , the situation in the US is now so out of control that, that the only solution is arming everyone from age 10 up.

61 shootings in Chicago over the weekend, not deaths. 9 people died as a result.

err no, its has a person problem, compounded by the ease of owning extremely powerful light arms. The US doesnt have any more nutters then anywhere else, its just there, ALL the nutters are armed

I'm reading reports that this wasn't a shooting, the victims have stab wounds and possibly more than one attacker. And also a fire alarm was set off and people were intentionally run over when they left the building.

Edit: confirmed not to be a shooting. A person ran over people and then got out of the car and started attacking them with a knife. He was shot by a police officer.

Looks like the only person shot was the attacker, who first attempted to ram a crowd with his car, then started stabbing people.

No serious injuries, other than to the attacker.

Apparently the police officer arrived on the scene within a minute of the attack starting. Good work there, no doubt he/she prevented a lot more injuries and possible deaths.

I suppose we'll have people complaining soon that the perpetrator was killed rather than just disabled.

And the silence was palpable! :D

stopped by a police officer with a gun, an entirely legitimate process, available in many countries not just the USA
