What is the "fixation" with Nitrogen..

A farm, well managed, will easily grow 6 or 7 tonnes of grass without any N application..maybe more

The nitrogen only grows extra grass when conditions are beneficial.

What growth rates are guys still applying Nitrogen actually getting? Are you measuring? A good green colour does not automatically equal growth..

The limiting factor is moisture...at this time of the year, any well managed ground not limited by moisture will easily grow 40 or 50 a day without nitrogen...Are you above this?

While feed bills may be extreme at the moment, there can't be any benefit in adding to cost by wasting Nitrogen..

Had a cow went down in milking parlour yesterday morning-disaster of a week so far--big old cow. She got one leg in the pit other leg out behind her and back stuck under the rump rail. Got her up and she walked out after about 20 minutes. I want to sent her to the factory, would there be damage to her meat from her ordeal?

There would be a bit of bruising I imagine. Could you wait a week or so before sending her?

I injected 2 cows with 40 ml tylosin each this evening on vets instructions 40ml first day 30ml next 2 days. Now both cows are restless even though it says overdosing causes no side effects. I usually give them 25 ml in one injection for 4 days.

Maybe they're just restless when they see you coming in case you're going to stick them with a big needle again! 40ml never caused a problem here anyways.

They were restless after milking out in the field, they could hardly see a needle coming. They didn't graze and stayed by the ditch lying down and getting up every few minutes.

What do they have? Tylosin would be no bother to cows 're dosage. Any chance it's the first signs of photosynthesization?

What was the vet treating them for?
    Injections would cause no problems.
Some other issue raising its head.

Lots of trial work going on in fairness ,1.85 kgms very respectable at this stage considering no grass is pretty good

Doing that here with meal and silage and only midding cows, half winter ladies included in that

I would agree. It's not much of an overdose, at normal strength of Tylosin, 20%, 40 ml is the dose for an 800 Kg cow.

Sounds very like photosythesization alright. Vet straightaway.

They were back to normal an hour after. They are high cell counts cows, maybe just the shock of two injections together.

#icis #urea #93rd Annual Southwestern Fertilizer Conference -Mood of the fertilizer market pretty bearish in the US Midwest - bumper harvest and low grain and corn prices not great for farmers or fertilizer sector.

Hopefully this will keep the price of straights at an affordable level...we'll need some amount if them this winter
