AFAIK, the council or corporation tend to gut these houses and re-fit them to a particular specification.

Yip, probably based on people moving in and complaining about such and such to their local councillors, so the council have to set them to a certain standard. I know a guy who used to do it for Dublin County Council as it was at the time.

You have to think that it's more to do with the council anticipating that one of the welfare queens or kings will have some issue with the property, even if they are getting it for nothing.

I believe that it is to do with insurance and health and safety regulations, the council has to be satisfied that the house - it's wiring, fittings and appliances are safe. It helps to limit their liability when it comes to claims.

I think you are right. Same way as charities I know of don't accept used electrical goods.

If it were a brand-new dishwasher, fair enough. I'd feel a bit leary of a used dishwasher that's been used to wash krips knows what over the years.
    Even worse for washing machines.
