I got a message which was just "Swap BMW?"

Back when I were a lad. I was asked to swap my bike for a BMW, by two ladies (of the night?), early on a Saturday morning as I cycled along the road at the back of Palmerston Park. To this day I wonder should I have take them up on their offer!

Few years ago, I bought a PS3 on adverts from some bloke in town, advertised as fully working but stupidly I didn't insist on seeing it working first. Took it home, didn't work, contacted the buyer and he told me to **** off you buy it as seen, dropped the admin team a line and they never even responded, the bloke even got my feedback removed and is still selling on there now.

Last year I put up an add for a load of hand tools ( no power tools) I wasn't using for 50 quid.

A lad 60 miles away wanted me to deliver them to him as he was waiting on his dog to have puppies.

Lad 2 wanted to know would I swap them for a his box of tools

Lad 3 wanted me to individually photograph each one so he could zoom in on them

Lad 4 asked how much it would cost for the bench the tools were on

Lad 5 said to lad 1 good luck with the bitch

Lad 6 offered 20 quid if I met him 40 miles away and he liked them

Lad 7 offered 40 but never turned up coz he bought the box off lad 2

    You have to laugh.

I have to say I find it very good and have sold loads of stuff that I would normally give away or dump you just have to be realistic with your price.. one man's rubbish is another mans gold as they say..

But people bidding ridiculous offers is annoying but you just have to hold on..

This thread is hilarious. Unfortunately I've nothing to contribute because I've only had good experiences on Adverts :(

I have no idea how people expect to rent a place with one outside photo on daft or sell a car with a photo of it in the distance from a bad angle.

Some of the best rental experiences I've had were on daft.ie with no photo. No picture means a lot less people go to view the place and the renter is sometimes more amenable to flexible offers.

Would you like to swap those good experiences for a bag of seedless grapes and a frozen lasagne?

Happens on eBay also, saw a Buy In Now recently for a 'New' open empty LEGO Polybag for GBP 5. In fairness it has free shipping though. For an empty bag.

I think people are fairly guilty of putting their stuff up there at unreasonable prices. I saw a child's trike (won't link) on sale for 50 euro when you can buy it in Smyths for 80 and maybe you can find it on Amazon cheaper again. I personally would rather pay that extra 30 euro 'premium' for something brand new with the added convenience, security and guarantee that comes with buying from Smyths.

If you're going to go through the hassle of buying or selling from someone privately on Adverts, Donedeal ect. then sellers really need to factor in a considerable discount and not look for 'cost price'.

You see some people that have things up there on sale for over a year. What an utter waste of energy and time that is for everyone concerned. Unless you're running an actual business then what is the point in having something up there for that long that you obviously no longer want or need to own. People need to sell it, buy it or take it down and move on.

    Thats adverts pricing.

List at 50 offered 20-30. List at 30 offered 10. If you want to sell for €100, you list for €140. Its just the silly game that goes on.

Never, EVER, put a freebie up on adverts. Just bin it, not worth the hassle.

I agree to an extent but would be more along the thinking that if you want to sell for 100 then accepting 80 or even 70 for example should be fair, so maybe price it at 120.

Going back to that children's trike I used as an example. I think its silly (even a little cheeky) that its up for 50 euro when it can be gotten brand new in Smyths for 80. When it could be faulty, a few years old, damaged, you have no recourse or warranty in the event of failing, the messaging back and forth, the waiting, the haggling, texting/phoning, arranging suitable times, judging is the person trust worthy, meeting them, paying, then getting feedback ect.

I'm just of the opinion that the seller is getting 'free cash' (as in they are getting rid of something they no longer need or want) so the buyer should usually be getting what is considered a 'bargain' in my opinion.

For the record I've only used adverts a hand full of times over the past few years and only ever had good interactions with people. It just irks me a lot more when someone is 'chancing their arm' from a sellers perspective for the reasons I outlined above.

I've seen photo's where you're wondering what you're looking at. Items with photo's sell faster and for more money.

Had an iPhone 5S on sale a few Christmas's ago. A girl up the road from me wanted it for her sons Xmas present so I sold it to her, complete with box, headphone and charger. As I dropped it up to her I told her to set the phone up on iTunes once its new SIM was inserted to get it going otherwise it wouldn't work ; so far so good.

11PM on Christmas Day and she gets onto me claiming the phone was locked (Which it wasn't as I got it directly from Apple plus it checked out as being unlocked on iCloud) and with other network SIM cards. I sat down and copy pasted the instructions from Meteor into a text on how to set up an iPhone (Co-incidentally the same as what I told her to do when I dropped it up to her.), she said fine she'd do that and that was that, so I thought.

4 nights later, again after 11PM she was back on. The phone was still locked and it was all my fault and I needed to get up to her straight away to fix it and that I was a crook taking advantage out of a single mum. I asked her if she had set it up on iTunes; of course she hasn't but it was still my fault and she'd have to pay €60 to get it unlocked. I told her to bring it to Steve Jobs for all I cared as it was unlocked and that her €60 was going to be wasted.

A month later, again after 11PM and notification came up that she had reported me to Adverts.ie and posted up a pile of bad mouth posts on a second ad I had up. A few days later I sat down and nosed through her comment and feedback history for Pig Iron. Mine was the third iPhone that she had bought on Adverts, all of which were mysteriously locked after she tried to use them :eek:

I had a sea unit show up to collect a bag of clothes after we had agreed a price of 50. She shows up, says she only has 20 on her and it was take it or leave it.

I told her to sling her hook, I'd rather sell it to someone else for cheaper than let someone get away with that crap

I had a few transactions on adverts (different username) over the years and I never had trouble tbh. Quite the opposite. Got rid of stuff I didn't fully expect to get rid of and bought a few nice things too. As another poster already said online its much easier to deal with the people who are never going to buy/sell anyway.

Donedeal on the other hand. It seems most ads there are created by either imbeciles or chancers. Adverts will do me fine.

I love adverts. Min price + blacklist those who make offers below in comments and timewasters = good experience. And couple dozen pages of blacklisted morons :D

I love adverts. Best thing they ever did was take moderating out of the public domain.

BTW the Donedeal guys sit in awe of how the Adverts guys achieve so much with 1/10 of the workforce.

I'll give you half a cheese sandwich and 4 minutes of hand sex behind Lidl.

Or swap for a discman and an inflatable turtle.

Swap for any of my ads?

they literally do no moderation of their own now.
the only way anything gets acted on is if somebody reports it (and a lot of rule breaches don't fall under any of the subcategories for reporting), so their effectively expecting the users to do their job for them.
then when you do report anything, there's at best a 50/50 chance of it ever being acted on, and if it is, it's usually too late or the offender just gets a slap on the wrist and they can go doing the same rule-breaking thing or repost same the offending ad.

but yes, it's the best thing they ever did.

Its because they aren't doing 9/10 of the moderation, or policing that would fix the problems we care complaining about. . I don't care if its in the public domain or not. As far as I can see there is mostly no moderation. The site is full of dead ads, and commercial spam and other spam ads. The whole PM for €1 and a bunch of other things are entirely not moderated. They are just ignored. I've used it from when it was part of boards. I find it vastly less useful than it used to be. But I realise it doesn't matter. Its no longer aimed at people like me.

My withdrawn ad rate is close to 150%. If I look a commercial seller, their sold to ads ratio is 5%. That is horrific. Maybe that's not representative of the adverts overall. But it mirrors my experience on adverts over that past few years.

I doubt anyone cares. There enough to sales to make it work. They only moderate critical stuff. End of.

I think that's a bit dramatic. If something is 80 new, and you can buy it second hand for 50 after a visual inspection, you've saved almost 40%. Presumably, if it's up for 50, the seller would likely accept 40, which would be a 50% discount. I can't see what's silly or cheeky about that?
