Keeping in mind Hogg is gone...

I meant it more in context of the fact Hogg has played 10 for the Lions before, I don't think have Laidlaw as cover in case of emergency is the end of the world.

If we go with Biggar and Laidlaw as our 10s and we lose the game because we had to bring on Laidlaw, then that's just luck going against us.

Yeah, I'd prefer Davies or Ford, but they may not want to call someone up for one game.

I'd be surprised if Carberry is in the top 10 of candidates.

Jackson, Russell, Ford... even Cipriani. All miles better options and far more deserving.

He might be in the top 10 options for Ireland.

Like I said, he had a mixed bag against USA, but I don't think that reflects what he's capable of. I don't think Gatland would care either. He'd be there to fill shoes to give guys like Sexton/Farrell/Halfpenny a break. It's all moot, ofcourse.

Don't get me wrong, if this was being said before his injury I would say yeah there's a chance as a bolter. But look at his last two performances at 10, Ulster and the USA. He's far from being in form and hasn't showed anything great since he's came back, other than a few performances at 15 where there's no cover needed really.

Jackson, Ford, Russell, Cipriani, even Mallinder would be seen ahead of him at 10 on form as of late.

    Joey Carbery for the Lions??

Hogg played 10 against the Combined Country team, the worst team the Lions faced and who didn't manage to score a single point.

We cannot use that as any sort of precedent when it comes to Laidlaw starting 10 against a Super Rugby team.

Why not? It's a midweek game before the first test. It's really not going to matter and it will be immediately overshadowed and forgotten even if we need to bring him on and that is the cause of us losing the game.

Carbery would need at least a half dozen injuries before being in the frame. He was nowhere remotely close to a call up before his injury.

Rightly so, some seriously tinted glasses view on where he stands. Hes a good bit behind about 10 other lads

    What a dodgy headline
This sizeable influx of temporary additions are more likely to be called up from the Welsh squad, who are playing Tonga in the first leg of an international double-header in Auckland tonight, and Scotland, who are playing Australia tomorrow, than an Irish squad currently based in Japan.

Just an assumption turned into a fact because its sexier.

Yeah, headline is dodgy though the concept is still pretty against the whole ethos - for whatever that matters.

It's a joke if he calls up several guys. But worth noting it's just Thornley saying it. Not one quote or piece of evidence in it.

Hold tackle bags, get trounced by Chiefs, get injured... Not the most enticing prospect. I'd rather they not call up any Irish players.

They won't. They'll call up people in country (including people on "fortuitous" holidays). Would be an interesting decision for a young player - they're better off playing for their national team for a lot of reasons though they'll get paid handsomely to join up with the Lions (and the associated prestige etc).

Anyway, I suppose it may not happen.

I thought the point of 41 players was that nobody would be called up?

You can't split the squad into the 2 camps with just 41 players thomond. GAWD!

Peter Stringer is in New Zealand at the moment

Will post for the third time the squad is to light at 41 considering the ferocity of the club games. The absolutely shocking omissions from Scotland is telling imo where is the hardest of the hard in Donnacha Ryan.

I don't see an issue with putting test benchers on the bench for the midweek games. The exception though might be frontrowers alright.

Friends out in NZ told me that buddies Joe Mahler and Sean O Brien are carrying injuries and won't last the tour.As for Stringer he's the new dwarf Ork according to Peter Jackson.

Id imagine good performances for the Lions would help him do that if anything. Hopefully he still hopes to play for Ireland though.
People are joking about stringer but I'd love to see him play in a midweek match, he deserves a lions cap for his career
