How would Jager playing for the Lions against the Chiefs have any impact on becoming an All Black down the line?

People are joking about stringer but I'd love to see him play in a midweek match, he deserves a lions cap for his career

They are considered caps so 2 would get him to the 100 right?

Wouldnt surprise me for Gats to call up a load of welsh, it would just add to people being very meh about winning

They ain't. Only test caps are. It would be like Ireland against the Barbarians.

Just have to stick him in the test team so. With Carbery.

Surely James Ryan is due a call up?

surely he's the holder of the best points per minute ratio in international rugby. Get him and stringer in that test squad now, Hanson will never see it coming.

If you're Keith Earls, who has already toured with the Lions would you want to be called up to sit on the bench against the Chiefs when you could be playing for Ireland against Japan? I know the Lions is the pinnacle but in that scenario I could see why a player would be lukewarm. I expect any additions to be Scottish or Welsh to be honest.

If its front row lads they need then I'd expect Cian Healy will be extremely interested in joining up.

Any chance we can tell NZ there has been a scheduling mistake and we should really be touring South Africa this year?

He'd absolutely jump at it. There's four more games after the Chiefs match, a lot can happen in that time.

If Gatland wants to make a test squad of ~ 23 players, and a midweek squad of ~23 players he needs to call up a full new front row, not exactly Wales and Scotland's highest quality areas. We could see a Gray called up if Lawes has had a bad knock.

He'd be happy enough to have WP Nel (who many thought would be on the tour originally before his injury), Ross Ford/Scott Baldwin and Rob Evans called up.

He called up Court last time due to proximity despite much better options being available. It's more about convenience and not having to play those in contention for the tests than putting out a strong side for the midweek game.

Would agree on a Gray being a potential call up. Probably Richie for familiarity given his presence on last tour.

BBC are now reporting that Gatland is planning on calling up 5 more players. Disappointing to hear. It appears that this was always the plan. I suspect the players who will be joining already know that they're likely to join the squad. I wouldn't be surprised if they're all Welsh, either.

Just heard a Leinster back row has been told to be on standby. Not my usual source so pure rumour.

There's about 50 lads on stand by though, isn't there? I'd imagine there could be two Leinster back rows on stand by if not more.

And Josh van der Flier left out of this weekend's game. It all adds up.

That's the gist of it I gather but as I said, just a rumour.

Fair enough...I thought the Chiefs game was the one between tests...

    Rob Evans and Richie Gray?
Weren't they both injured and didn't tour this summer?
    Would think Gatland needs 6,
A complete front row, one 2nd row, one scrum-half, and one out-half.
Would expect Nicky Smith, Ross Ford, WP Nell, Jonny Gray, Gareth Davies and Sam Davies.

You're right. I knew about Gray but was being dense. Didn't realise about Evans.

Re: Earls/other back three players; given the lack of impact by the back three so far on tour, anyone called up now might have a shot of forcing their way into test consideration by the end. Especially if there are any injuries there, which isn't exactly unthinkable.

If a load of Welsh get called up, it will leave a seriously sour taste. I'd be okay with some Scots getting the nod, some of their centres should probably have been there anyway in retrospect.

Why would it leave a sour taste?

Being a Lion is a prestigious thing for a player. Deliberately planning to call up players mid tour when your own team is touring nearby and then calling them up appears deeply unfair. It's all conjecture at this point though.

If it's a deliberate ploy to maximise their chances in the tests, then who cares?

After living here for 6 or 7 years now, I'm still not understanding the general dislike for Gatland and the Welsh.
