Small listenership meaning less advertisers is a.common misnomer . Actuality is that it means people are not listening in sustainable numbers .

no, it isn't. advertisers aren't going to rush to stations with small listenership when there are bigger ones with bigger listenership, unless their product is only specifically catering to the market the stations serve.

the fact is sustainible numbers are only part of the story here. what you stated is not the full story the station closed. listenership was only a small part of the story, the reason it is only a small part of the story is that stations with small listenership can and do survive around the world. but only when they can operate in proportion to their size. when looking at the reasons a station closes, many factors have to be taken into account. the type of business environment it was expected to operate in, the obligations it was expected to meet, and the costs that came with said.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

no, it went out of business because it's costs and the business model it was expected to follow were way too high. it should never have been licenced as a full commercial station but a community of interest licence. yes, the listenership was small, and that would have meant less advertising and less money. but when a small station playing a niche format is expected to behave like a full service commercial radio station operating a popular format which brings in money, then it's not surprising that one day it will end in disaster.

I simply don't agree , radio is a business and when listenership is too low , it will not attract a listenership . It's a commercial environment and you either sink or swim . The backers of this and all other stations know the rules before they apply for licences

Niche format stations are becoming more niche that ever and many cannot survive even as community or not for profit stations as even the basic costs of broadcasting far outweigh the benefits of most.

They can survive if they target a more mature audience and have a lot of community programming, but stations like TXFM are competing with online stations and spotify and their target listeners are too fickle with little brand loyalty.

I remember the heyday when thousands took to the streets when Sunshine & Nova were closed. TXFM barely got any media coverage when it closed.

well, someone should inform the BAI of that, shouldn't they. there is sinking and swimming when something can operate in an environment on a model that can operate in proportion to it's size and size of market, and there is sinking or swimming in an environment where the regulator believes every commercial licence to be the same regardless of size. whether they knew the rules when they applied or not is just whataboutery and deflection from the reality.

yet we have plenty of community radio stations around the country still on air, so the basic transmission costs quite possibly aren't as high as you claim.

they can possibly also survive if they are allowed to operate on a model in proportion to their size rather then the 1 size fits all model that currently exists for commercial licences.

    great. but it's irrelevant.

    .

very small transmission areas and part-time broadcasting hours, just not suitable for something like txfm

No, they should be allowed to have full access to transmission areas and full time broadcasting and Revenue generation opportunities - but less obligations. The other commercial radio stations wouldn't mind at all.

but they will still have basic costs of broadcasting. which clearly don't outweigh the benefits as they wouldn't be on air. they are also allowed to operate on a model proportionate to their size. so again, whatever you are arguing is agreeing with what i have said.

What on Earth was the story with that girl who was on Morning Glory the other day, Sarah Mulligan? It was bizarre, to say the least. She proceeded to inform the listeners that she was a big fan of Donald Trump and was launching a website dedicated to him, before launching into a rendition of Star Spangled Banner. It was also deemed necessary to inform us that she was wearing some kinky lingerie in the studio. What the Hell, Nova? What had any of that 'interview' got to do with anything rock related?

Have stopped listening to MG unless I'm having trouble sleeping and it's on in the background. Start my listening with GG - at least he isn't big into the whole happy clappy banter.......well not to the same extreme :D

Saw her non TV3's Six O'Clock Show - she's trying to get publicity for her Marilyn Monroe act... she's a bit time actress - as in she was in the background in game of thrones. She thanked Radio Nova for giving her promotional time

She's possibly a glamour model also...

Is she or isn't she? If you're not sure it's a strange comment to make.

Tune in before Friday in that case, as Dee Woods is back on Monday. I'm guessing Irwin will be returning to news and traffic in the mornings.

It certainly is a strange one, alright. Apparently she's also working on a website dedicated to Donald Trump, but specifically for his Irish 'supporters'. I believe she subscribes to the 'No such thing as bad publicity' philosophy, as she didn't seem to be sufficiently informed or concerned about Trump's political ideology or actions. She was simply trying to grab people's attention. I still can't fathom why Nova of all stations decided to give her a platform to help launch her career in..........singing? Political blogging? Or was it lingerie design?

Maybe all the above :D Doubt she'll be back after Mon - as you said, Mamma Dee is back.

Had a proper read through of the site.....if that is possible (it's like a crossover between a GeoCities site and a teenagers school project lol). Still have no idea how she got on the show - favour from a friend working there or something???

I thought Conor has done very well on the mic.
I wonder will they keep him more involved in a '3-way' or would that be overkill?

Ha ha! I'd say Miller got a slap off Dee when she saw the video on Facebook (eyes forward, Marty!).

I think you're right. I suspect that she's trolling for attention and knows some people in the right places. I mean, she can't be for real..........surely? However, in saying that, trolling can work and get results when used in the right way. Look at Paul Stenson, who runs the Charleville Lodge Hotel/White Moose Cafe. He has garnered international attention and the business is thriving thanks to his online antics. He is a marketing genius. But the difference between Stenson and Mulligan is that Stenson is actually funny.

It would seem a tad unfair to bump him back to traffic duties. But in saying that, a third presenter on Morning Glory would be overkill if you ask me.

Speaking of which, what's with the new slogan? I can't recall the exact wording, but it's something to the effect of: 'Putting the mourn, in Morning Glory'. Not only does it not make sense, but it kind of contravenes the perky, wacky image that they're trying to portray.
