Got engaged over Christmas and now have to go ring shopping (used a token to pop the question), anyone any advice for getting the ring? I haven't a clue about any of it tbh.

    Congratulations!!

Ring shopping is easy. She'll see a ring she likes. The price will make you cry. You'll see 100 rings that look the same and are cheaper.
She'll still take the most expensive one.

Got ours in Hatton Garden in London, they made it to order - she picked out the diamond she wanted and the setting, style etc and they made the ring. Sterling is weak now so maybe worth a trip over. It's actually a really interesting way to do it and you know the ring is one of a kind.

    Edit: Oh, and CONGRATS!!!

    Congrats.

My advice is to bring her with you. Turn it into a couples thing. She can make sure she’s happy. A few places will feed you champagne or prosecco while you’re there too so it can actually be a bit of craic doing it together.

    This thread is surreal

    « Here’s a token, will you marry me? »
    « Feed someone champagne »

A metaphor for marriage, here’s an expensive token, now feed me for the rest of our lives.

It's even easier if you were my OH and thinking of proposing

This is the ring I want

Don't bother seeing if there are alternatives, as there are not.

We can split the cost if needs be :)

She has this place in mind at the moment, so they'll bring us in (presumably ply us with booze), and let us her pick through what she wants while I cry at the price. She's a very minimalist girl so I think she's only looking for a plain band with a diamond plopped on top.

We live in London so we're going to pop around Hatton Garden too, but from reading around reviews, people seem to get ripped off as often as they are happy with their purchases from that place so I'm a little wary. What place in Hatton Garden did you get it from Zippy?

She seems to have her heart set on the place I linked but I'd like to shop around to give her a few options and avoid buyers remorse down the line.

Dunno if possible in the UK, but we went directly to a goldsmith for our rings. It cuts out the middle man. And like molloy said you can then go custom made to suit what you like.

I brought herself to this place in Antwerp and she loved it. We went to a few other places there to look at rings as well and they were by far the most professional. They don't do walk ins so you need to email before you go. In the course of the emails he will ask if you have any idea of what kind of rings you'd like and what your budget is. If you do go to him feel free to PM me as there are a few extra some info I could give you which are better kept off the main thread ;)

Be honest with your budget and don’t let her try on anything outside that. Go in and get the details of the ring, band material, type of the diamond (the four Cs - colour, clarity, carat and cut) etc. You only need to remember them for long enough to google that stuff to get a feel for prices etc. You’ll get a good idea very quickly if you’re being ripped off. Have a look at what options they have for after care. Do they offer regular cleaning of the ring for example. If there are issues with the ring are you on your own or will they look after you. An established jewellers should do that stuff.

Have a look to see if either of your employers has a deal with a jewellers too. We managed to save a few hundred quid that way.

what's the general thoughts towards lab made diamonds?

If a child hasn't died for it, I don't want to know.

You're probably asking in the wrong place. Anyone of us who've cried at the prices of a ring would snap your hand off for them but it's what herself wants that matters

You're the second person to say that to me this week. I'm still not sure what it is.

You're the second person to say that to me this week. I'm still not sure what it is.

It's a game where you have a black card which contains a statement with a blank or a question and each player has 10 white cards which they put down to fill in the blank or answer the question. The winner is the one who makes the person who put down the black card laugh. In general a good way to do this if by putting down the most inappropriate answer imaginable.

Here's a pick of some cards to give you an idea

Edit* You can also download the game for free, from the manufacturer instead of buying it if you want to be cheap

I mean, the guys have a point.

I've done the calculations, and I think the only option is to break it off now.

I just don't see the point in paying big money for a bauble. Pointless waste of money fuelled by peer pressure and marketing.

    There. I've said it.

Yes, you've done it now... you've gone ahead and said it on a faceless bulletin board!

... Try saying it to the missus. ;)

Just had this conversation with a mate on new year's eve, seemed a common piece of advice was that if you phone ahead with your budge they'll do their best to only show you stuff within it and that improves the experience. They bought theirs in Amsterdam in the end I believe.

There was other advice but it was new year's eve and it went in one ear and out the other... :pac: Definitely talk to people who've done it before though, seems loads of little things can make a big difference.

We have an agreement that I get a watch for the same value of the ring so this way we get to pointlessly waste extra money but we both get pretty baubles out of the deal. I'm okay with it.
