In fairness he often does it....did it every day at Hoylake when he won, I think, even though there was no real need for driver at the hole. So he's consistent anyway but with the wind there and the way he tried to give it a fair hoike, not sure it's a good tactic. The way he was smiling after coming off the green was odd...could take that either way.

Look I love it - but not there.

Rory has started off with a poor choice and bad putting.

It is a little micorperspective of his problems.

Day still looking for his first birdie on the back 9 this week. Back 9 ruining his chance more than most.

Rory just doesn't seem to have the mindset for it anymore. He will of course probably go and have a load of birdies from now on but his mistakes just destroy his cards.

I don't think you should force a score around here at all - it is a short course and a links in wind.

Playing % golf gives you as many chances.

But besides that - there is no point in fooling ourselves - his putting is nowhere near these guys at the moment

I think it was a mistake to not cut greens

It is a major for god sake - this idea that you can jut hit ball harder is very hard for a pro.

Balls not rolling out is another problem.

About from Kaymer on the only ones that realistically have a chance.

Come on Phil - (1st preference)

and I can't believe I'm saying this - but with all Irish gone - come on Sergio.

    Jesus Christ

My 5 minutes of following Sergio are over - that was a disgrace.

The standard narrative is that Rory is a streaky/confidence putter and on his day etc etc. I genuinely can't remember the last time he had one of those rounds.

I fear he has become a bad putter.

It is a terrible leaderboard. This can happen in The Open.

    Phil
    Sergio
    Reed

Only ones to keep you awake.

Rory just can't help forcing it all the time. It's painful to watch, and it's like he's learned nothing, and hasn't evolved at all since he dominated tournaments routinely a couple of years ago.

He has no idea how to rein things in and just get around a golf course. Plus he will ALWAYS miss a 3 footer or 2 over the course of a round.

Yesterday, on the 7th I think, there was no advantage to him driving, and he risked going into bunkers either side if he was a fraction off. He landed between them, so it was ok, but it was a bad decision. And it was a needless risk.

His golfing sense just has not matured. It's fúcking frustrating to watch at every Major now.

    What he do?

I'm up for Sergio again :p

Following Sergio is like following Paddy without the Trophies :D

Nearly all of the chasing pack going with driver off the first, not for Zach though. He hits his 3i into bunker.

It would be a great study.

Would love to know average of score of Driver v Iron.

But his driving has given him a great chance on every hole since.
It is just genuinely 1 I don't get - because from say 100 yards - these lads will have an easy enough bird putt.

He is losing more on the greens.

He looked noticeably nervous on first tee - in fact he has looked in poor form all week.

Phil - is so relaxed smiling - honestly , you rarely see Rory smile anymore.

    I love Sergio again.

Jesus - Rikand, following Sergio is like Paddy on crack.

Also, Rory looks fúcking ridiculous in that stupid bullet proof vest.

It was funny - on practice green , he was being recorded talking to his team about top - he was making shapes like it is a little uncomfortable to wear.

His driving is great. That's not my argument. My argument is that he does needless things, that are all symptomatic of a golfer who doesn't manage a course well. There was no advantage to using a driver on the 7th yesterday over an iron that would've got him to a perfect pitching distance.

Yes, his putting is bad. But I believe that's symptomatic of a bigger issue with him. He just doesn't get around golf courses in a sensible fashion. Ever. It's always all or nothing.

Would Rory even make the Olympics at this rate? Seems to be a very average player and a deeply unpleasant person.

How or why do you have that perception?

As an avid fan of his his attitude really stinks. His helicopter reference at the end of a recent interview just about sums him up atm.

There's a Nike store around the corner from me that I use to buy golf and gym gear on the cheap, those gillets are always in the running section. Make of that what you will.

    -EDIT- It's a jacket not a sleeveless!

Naw, the world number 4 wouldn't make the Irish team

People need to settle down with the McIlroy talk. You'd swear from reading here that he was struggling to break 80.

He's in the top 20 after being on the wrong side of the draw.

Massive respect for Rory shouting fore there, especially when alot of tour pros don't.
