The data speeds on lycamobile I find to be a joke.
I got it for my mum who uses it primarily for calls on the Ireland plus package but seeing speeds of .1 mbit /sec.
    Horrifically bad -> unusable.

Where are you? I more or less get a minimum of 10mb D/L and 1MB U/L in Dublin.

If lyca are on the 3 network would it be safe to assume if a 3 mobile works great in your area then the lyca will? Or am I being very naive?

    calls yes.
texts should (although it seems that lyca have issues with texts not being delivered sometimes, even though a delivery report is issued).
data runs on a system where lyca routes its traffic through the mobile network and then to London where it's core system is finally and out to the internet backbone (different to what you'd have on 3).
there also may be throttling and prioritisation (lyca lower priority) going on with lyca data on the three network.

no problem with three there which lyca runs on.

Lyca are on the legacy o2 network (as are Tesco & 48)so do not have equivalent coverage to 3.

Well I have the new sim so I'll just top up by €15 on Christmas morning for her and see how it goes, if she finds it cr*p, I'll just get another network, no harm done. Thanks for the info guys.

for the ireland plus package you have to top by 15 then buy the package also (through the website easiest).

Is that not why you need to have Data Roaming turned on when using Lyca so you can technically "Roam" on the Three network when the legacy o2 network isn't available?

So in other words I have to top up by €30. It doesn't say that on the ad I seen. Is the initial €15 a once off? Seems odd.

No just use the €15 credit on the phone to buy it :)

You don't have to top up, you can just buy the bundle directly

I'm on a bill pay phone, do I need to get it unlocked? Also, how will my existing network know when I have stopped using their service and know to cancel it?

If you're still in contract, you'll have to pay the balance or else see it out. If you are on a rolling 30-day plan, you can port over to Lyca. Lyca will do all that for you.

It's a rolling 30 day plan. I've no idea what you mean by port it over to Lyca though... :o I suppose I'm wondering if I have to get my phone unlocked and who does that?

Try a sim from another network in the phone. If its locked and you got the phone from your current provider they should give you an unlock code free depending on how much you have spent topping up (its usually €100 or over) if not e bay is good for unlock codes, price will depend on phone

To be honest, if you don't know what any of those things are (and not bothered with looking them up) then I wouldn't recommend this undertaking for you - it won't go smoothly.

Fair enough, thanks for the heads up.

That's only if you select auto topup option. I top up both of my lads acc via Paypal and I've never had it done automatically as I didn't select the auto top up option.

Sorry if it has been mentioned already, but the Ireland Plus bundle (unlimited national calls, text and 30GB data) is going to €10 as a Black Friday deal.

I'm out of contract in a few weeks with another provider.
Any way I can still work / avail of this offer.
    Cheers

Lol, I can't tell the difference between the €10 and €20 bundles and the €15 one is practically the same as the other two!

Is it 10 every month once signed up.
Or just for 1 month only

How long does it usually take for a sim card to be posted out? Waiting on mine nearly two weeks now....

Just the first month, I think. Herself signed up recently with the LYCA10 10% discount code which only applied for the first month.

Yeah, that's not happening I'd guess.

Yeah, that's not happening I'd guess.

I kinda thought that alright - even though I received mails to say that it had been sent and another one saying "now that you've received your sim card"... I suppose I better request another one and hope for better luck this time.... :(

I think you are right, it is a short term offer, but it seems to apply to who is already on the Ireland Plus deal - my renew date was today and I got it.
