    I'm just lost for words.
Cringing though and thanking science and sheer good luck that I'm not in that constituency.

Rubbish. The fact remains in 1847 the country imported more food than it exported.

That is only a 'fact' if from the official figures which even at the time were known to be flawed. In 1847 400,000 people died of starvation in Ireland, it's probably not the best year for you to pick to be sh1ting on about official Britain's generosity to Ireland

There is also the not insignificant issue of the quality of food being exported and imported. A ton of meat or dairy produce is a lot more nutritious than a ton of maize. Also, much of the cereal being imported for famine relief was of such poor quality that it was completely inedible.

Here's a short piece by Christine Kinealy re. imports and exports of food to Ireland. Her books on the history of the famine are excellent.

Google numerous sources and it will educate you simplistic mind. I am not anti Irish by the way, I am very Irish.

In 1847, at the height of the Famine, Ireland exported 39,000 tonnes of wheat, and 98,000 tonnes of oats , and imported 199,000 tonnes of wheat, 12,000 tonnes of oats and 682,000 tonnes of maize. Net imports of 756,000 tonnes

Mary, this is a letter written to a newspaper. It has as much value as saying 'it's true - a fella in the pub told me'

682,000 tons of maize? I wonder how much of that found it's way to
to the indigenous population ? and if it did what would they do with it?

There are sources there if you look for it. You are too lazy to google the info yourself.

I always like this quote as a beautiful piece of evidence of English Malthusian thinking:

"The judgement of God sent the calamity to teach the Irish a lesson, that calamity must not be too much mitigated. The real evil with which we have to contend is not the physical evil of the Famine, but the moral evil of the selfish, perverse and turbulent character of the people."

Good old Charlie Trevelyan. What a guy.
