Mods have put so much time into these threads already so I'm going to give a once off warning now.

There will be zero tolerance for any racism, xenophobic comments, etc.

I understand this is an emotive subject and the loss of innocent life is devastating but if you come in here spouting shîte, prepare to be banned.

Folks, we've locked enough immigration threads and there are plenty in politics café if that's what you wish to discuss.

This thread is regarding the attacks in Brussels not immigration and though they may be linked I'm asking that and immigration discussion takes place in politics café, thanks. If it continues we'll need to hand out thread bans as locking this thread isn't really an option right now. Please take the above on board

    ____

I wonder if it's terrorism related?
Surely it'd be packed with business travellers at this time.
Just saw the Indo reports the explosions near the American Airlines checkin at Departures.
    The pictures don't look good.

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/22/brussels-airport-explosions-heard
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35869254
Two explosions have been reported at Zaventem airport in Brussels.
Images on social media from the scene showed smoke rising from one of the terminal buildings. The cause of the explosions is unknown.
Some reports from the scene speak of casualties but this has not been confirmed.
The blasts come four days after the capture in Brussels of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the Paris attacks in November.

Highly unlikely. It would be great if it was not. Still tragic.

    No surprise there.

Was listening to the breakfast show of one of the Dutch stations 30 mins ago and the presenter mentioned that there had been 2 explosions in Zaventem. They played a clip from Belgian radio of a woman at the airport who had phoned in. Real fear. Got Belgian TV on now.

When will this sh*t ever end??:(

Oh...shut up. Honest to god, there's people who will snatch a tragedy -as it is unfolding- to have a go. Yes, we are all aware of the existence of Islamic terrorists. Anyone who has been awake for the past decade is aware of.

The eye witness on Sky news saying it went off next to a flight boarding for Dublin.

Looks like a lot of damage done to the front of the terminal.

Edit: main blast was next to American Airlines check in desk.

You sound like those NRA school shooting apologists claiming guns don't kill people.

As with guns, religion kills people when it is in irresponsible hands

Personally, I don't think the issue lies solely at the door of migrants, or Muslims. For the most part, these terrorist attacks are orchestrated by second or third generation Europeans, born and raised in Belgium or France, with zero sense of belonging, and totally disillusioned with it all.

I read only yesterday how Brussels averaged 15 people a month leaving the country to go join ISIS in Syria, over the last few years. This number they claimed was thankfully down now to 5.

But this is what ISIS plays on in its recruitment drive, and I fear that the more we turn away migrants and Muslims alike, (and watch how quickly Belgium disregard their rights after this), I fear the more we play into ISIS's hands.

I genuinely do not know how we can resolve this. For the most part, we can't even identify exactly who it is we're fighting.

Thoughts go out to the victims and their families. Just horrific.

Hopefully anyone responsible is caught and locked up. They want death but I would prefer them alive to witness the eventual fall of ISIL. I want them to know the cause they were willing to die for is a failure and will be a regrettable footnote in history.

You always find them in threads and comment sections like this, I'm convinced they are actually secretly delighted that bombings, killings, and maimimgs happen so they can have a rant about 'the left', the left being anyone who doesn't share their pathetically blinkered hate fuelled view of the world.

Brussels has been on high alert this week and Im sure security is the tightest it has been and these b@#tards are still able to get in with and detonate explosives!

That's the core of it and how it goes when you're fighting a guerrilla army of terrorists, unfortunately. To fight anyone that shares a nationality, religion or skin tone as them just means creating more desperate people who will be easy prey to the radicals. To fight just the ones that have shown their hands means the western countries have to remain ever on the defensive and wait for them to show their hands first.

It's the worst sort of bastard war there is, judging by the history books.

    Complete nonsense post.

What is the point of a thread like this if people can't discuss the possible reasons why these attacks are happening.

I doubt anybody is secretly delighted people are being killed in order to have a rant about someone elses opinions.Only a complete lunatic would think like that.

Attacks on western civilization, airports, subways, restaurants...etc. cheapest means of warfare for these to engage in. Scare the western ppl into going out, travelling, tear down free movement within Europe.

This is scary, now I'm thinking will I go on that weekend to London, will I go hols to France like I was planning to? They've already destroyed tourism in turkey, tunisia ...etc.

Everyday another horrendous loss of life replaces the day befores front page loss of life :(

This is exactly like Paris, distraction tactics before a huge attack. I won't be shocked if there is a massive explosion somewhere later this morning.
