Frankly I can't imagine anyone but apprentice being paid 10 Euro or less in any job that requires some skills.

WOW!! Maybe you should get down off your high horse there.. What a ridiculous statement to make.

Considering I am part owner of a small business that employs more or less lower educated workforce and I do the wages and recruitment I kind of know what I am talking about. It is very hard to get anyone with some certifiable skills that would work for less than 10 euros. It might seem satisfactory money to a student or a foreigner house sharing with six others but they are not talking about a living wage of 11something for no reason.

What seems generous to a student becomes much much less when you are in your thirties.

To add more on topic edit. One of the main problems is that bloggers are trying to make money in very saturated market. Too many people think that being good looking, knowing how to apply make up and liking what they do is enough to survive. Yes if you also have a day job but being a full time business it becomes much harder. And in the long run taking short cuts won't help.

So why make such a remark?! There is plenty of skilled jobs out there who are paying well below the average. You sound so insulting.

At this stage, I'm really tired of talking about this raincoat – I was under no obligation to be so effing transparent, and I've got pretty much nothing but grief for it (and we want bloggers to be honest – why?).

But to answer your question: I was making the point that I did not, in fact, get paid for the raincoat, and that the coat itself was not equal to payment. I offered to post about the raincoat on various forms of social media – for which I would need the raincoat itself. If I had been charging for the amount of coverage they got in exchange, I *could* have charged 10 times the amount.

I'm not for a second suggesting that the time it took me to post about said coat was worth €1,290 – but the time it took me to build up the social media following I have might be. As has already been said, that's up to the brand in question.

But really, isn't it a moot point? No money changed hands. Your issue is that you think I'm being arrogant – and you want, what, for people to agree with you? I'm sure loads of them do.

For what it's worth, I don't think my time is more valuable than anyone else's – but that's not how the world works. If it was, Beyoncé would get paid less to sing (a talent she was born with) than a doctor would get to work in a hospital (a skill she / he acquired, through years of training). And before you get your pants in a twist, I'm not comparing myself to Beyoncé *or* a doctor – but asking, "do you think your time is more valuable than mine?" is, frankly, childish. Capitalism doesn't operate on the basis of whose time or skill is worth what.

My opinion is my own, I am one person an individual, I'm not looking for anyone to agree with me or anything of the sort, I am anonymous on this thread so why would I need strangers to validate my opinion? I simply wanted to ensure that my comment had come across as I intended.
You wanted the raincoat, you said you approached them to ask if you could get one gifted to you, you made an agreement to post whatever number of times in return. You agreed, the company agreed. You got what you wanted and so did they. All fair enough no problems there at all.
My one issue was that you then came on here stating you did the company a favor & you *could* of charged 10 times the amount of the coat.
*I* me, as an individual find this arrogant and also a bit disrespectful to the company.
Its really as simple as that. I have no issue with you, it is just my feelings on one comment you made, on a public forum, which is open to criticism. Just as my comments are.

I am not a native English speaker and I was quickly typing on a phone. I had an inkling it will be misunderstood but I was hoping most will understand from the context what I was trying to say.

Btw 10 Euro per hour is well below average.

You created an anonymous Boards.ie account in order to point out how arrogant I am. I won't apologise for taking that personally – it seems that you do, in fact, have an issue with me.

Emm yea okay, I honestly didn't know who you were until I read this thread today & then went on Instagram to find out, as I was curious after reading the raincoat comment and surprised that I didn't know who you are, as I do follow some bloggers. So nope, I'm afraid its impossible for me to have an issue with a person I know nothing about. But as I mentioned previously it was just your raincoat comment that I had an issue with.

I'm just surprised you'd feel so passionately about it that you'd make a boards account especially – but fair enough.

For what it's worth, it was a throwaway comment on my part; I wasn't being precise, and I wasn't trying to be rude about Ember & Earth. I was just making the point that, when it comes to "social influencers" and commercial partnerships, you'd be making a lot more than the value of one coat – so when people claim that "you ARE getting paid because you got a coat!", it's in no way comparable.

Oh my..... That comment is laughable to say the least, I joined today as a blogger I do follow had mentioned threads on Boards.ie on her snapchat & came on for a look.

Afaik newly qualified nurses are earning below minimum wage so I can see how people would find your comment quite insulting. Good for you if you earn that much an hour - but don't be arrogant enough to assume that your pay rate is directly correlated with your level of skills. Luas drivers are outearning teachers who have years of qualifications behind them.

Where did I say how much I earn? I said I know how much you have to pay to get anyone half skilled. I am on no great money as many other small employers we skipped any luxuries and sometimes also our own income to keep the business alive during recession. Frankly some snotty kid who probably still gets pocket money will not lecture me on how much people who work for us or ourselves should be paid. And if thinking that people deserve half decent money for decent work makes arrogant then so be it.

BTW don't bs me with a starting salary, tell me how many nurses would be happy with that kind of money after three years of work?

Who are you referring to here? I hope it's not the poster above! You really do come across extremely arrogant and bad mannered in your replies.

You also said 2 pages back, that in "your" line of work, you would earn €129 in 3hrs. Sure isn't it well for you..

It is the poster above. And I will not apologize to someone who intentionally twists my words even I expect I was talking as an employer not as how much money I think I am worth.

Frankly some of you resent anyone that would have a bit more money or would earn more even though they are way past student years. To think 10 euro per hour is enough to pay yourself and cover your cost as a business or contractor is silly.

Seriously? I said we would charge 40 euros to cover fixed cost (insurance, electricity, wages etc) and have very narrow profit margin. That is what a hour costs and a lot of other professions charge much much more. Do you think that cost of an hour is what an employee is paid per hour.

Personally, your attitude stinks. How do I resent anyone who has a bit more money? You don't know me from Adam nor what I do for living or how much is in my bank account. Don't be so sanctimonious. Trying to insult people who are giving their opinion.

Anyway this has gone completely off topic and I won't be discussing it anymore with you.

Everyone, can we get back on topic please?
If we can stay on "what you want in/from a blog" and keep it on things you like, and less of the things you don't like from X, Y and Z,
I hope it can steer the thread back on track.
    Thanks

According to Rosemary's snapchat today we in this thread are "disastrously nasty" to some bloggers. She wasn't referring to herself but she said we are to others. I'd like you to clarify that comment please Rosemary and state why it is you think that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 716 ✭✭✭SarahJ

Yea I don't think anyone has been nasty about bloggers here, just being honest.
At the end of the, Rosemary is the one that asked the original question.

I was referring to boards.ie threads which have, in the past, been seriously nasty towards other bloggers. I did say, no one has been disastrously nasty to me. But, like I've also said here, it's hard not to take it personally when I'm one of a teeny handful of bloggers bothering to get involved in these discussions, and I seem to come in for a huge amount of flak.

On another note, you seem to have some problems with me, and a lot of other bloggers – so why don't you do yourself a favour and unfollow those who give you grief, and about whom you feel such a strong desire to give out? You might find your life would be a lot more pleasant.

I'm done now, attempting to discuss blogs, what we'd like from them, and what we wouldn't; in my opinion, threads that start off interesting always end up descending into petty little back and forths about nothing.

And oh: if I talk about something on Snapchat, it's probably because I'm tired of talking about it on boards.ie. If you have an issue with something I've said on SC, why not snap me about it instead of bringing it back here and using it to sh*t stir?

I did unfollow you. It was my housemate who showed it to me.
I don't "have a desire to give out" about anyone, but this thread is about "what we would like to see in blogging", so forgive me if I, you know, suggest what it is that I would like to see.

Am I missing something? When was the last time you suggested something you'd like to see? I can't be bothered reading through every single comment you've made but the first one was giving out about photo editing apps and your most reason suggestion "of what it is you would like to see" was, er, a post about what I said on my snapchat. Care to clarify?

Sounds like you and your housemate have a riot.

Oh – and you didn't unfollow me. According to my Snapchat a/c, I blocked you. Funny that!

No Rosemary I unfollowed you. Please tell me how you know you blocked me since you have no idea what my snapchat name is? It's not even my name here. Lol.
I'm constantly posting in this thread and usually state what I like and dislike. Most recent praise included Chloe Boucher and Pippa O Connor.
As I've stated recently what I would "like to see" is less photoshop, filters and bright lights so we can see the make up properly. There ya go.

Weird. Not me. I unfollowed you ages ago, I think I posted on here a few weeks back about unfollowing you. Anyway my real name isn't even Anna, so no chance that's me. Lol.

    Edit
My request to keep it on the straight and narrow was ignored, and instead a small handbag session broke out.
Therefore I'm threadbanning onthemitch and anna080 from this thread until Friday morning 8am.
If either of you post before that time, I will ban you from the forum.

Everyone else, back on track please. Let's keep it on things you'd like to see in a blog
