This is probably a highly controversial non PC statement but as a long term MMA fan, and someone who's travelled to Vegas multiple times for McGregor fights...I don't enjoy all the new fans. I just have to be honest, i dont like that every tom dick and harry now has an opinion on a sport that they've been watching for five minutes. MMA was always a subculture niche sport that me and a handful of my buddies followed religiously and that's the way I liked it. So sue me :D

I get where you're coming from, even if it's not the stance I take myself. To be honest, I try to stay away from this thread in particular as much as I can since there's a load of "true fans vs. bandwagoners" nonsense most days which I have no time for, but if I want to post about McGregor it's really the only place to do it. The one thing I'll say is that nobody should be deterred from posting in this forum just because they might be perceived as "bandwagoners", if they can contribute to the forum in a positive way, that is.

Remember, we were all newbies to the sport at one point, and while there's plenty of posters here who aren't too interested in the sport yet, that can certainly change over time, and when you see posters who were brought into the sport by McGregor starting post in other event threads, you know they're getting to like the sport, which is just brilliant IMO. The main thing to take away from it, is that Conor McGregor has only had a positive impact on the sport in this country, and more MMA fans means new MMA gyms opening their doors, more professional Irish fighters coming to the fore and more live MMA events on these shores like UFC, BAMMA and so on.

So in short, while the new set of fans (whether they watch just Conor or other fighters and events as well) may annoy some people here, they are in a way the best thing to happen to mixed martial arts in this country, whether you like to admit it or not.

    So it's a closed club then ?

what will make a new fan eventually acceptable to you ?

I don't really care mate. Anyone can watch it, I never said they can't. I just am not of the general opinion that the sport getting more popular is of any benefit to me. I was in Vegas for 189 and 194 and met plenty of Johnny come-latelys and had a good time with them.

Sure, but everyone is new to it at some stage - including the experts

For a long time in Ireland mma was a small exclusive club. For a lot of people who were involved or around it, other people 'discovering' it runs the gamut from being mildly irritating (especially when they analyse fights and fighters poorly, for want of a better word) to absolutely maddening.

Its kind of like people who listened to bands before they were big

I didnt really like mma until CMcG came along. I was always a big boxing fan and when MMA came along I never thought it lived up to boxing. Always believed boxing was way more technical, skilful and that they were better athletes.

Then CMcG came along. So I started watching him. I enjoyed his fights so I started looking at other fighters too. I then built up a knowledge and understanding of the sport and now I love it. Alot of that is down to CMcG.

The more popular the sport gets the better the fighters get. Which is great for us.

I don't think Edgar was ever getting a shot at the 145 belt.
I just cannot see McGregor going back down to featherweight.
I presume that regardless what happens at UFC 196, MCGregor will be fighting Dos Anjos at UFC 200? If so, and he wins, one could imagine he will vacate the featherweight belt. Or am I way off?

Ya he def won't fight at 145lbs again, especially after enjoying the breeze of a cut to 170lbs.

He puts himself through agony to make 145lbs. Ain't happening again (especially if he destroys Diaz). He wouldn't even be too small a welterweight really.

I would be the same......first came across UFC when McGregor was on the late late show a few years, thought who was this gob****e with his wwf wrestling then I started watching.....I could now name more referees in the sport than I could in boxing ........but I still wouldn't watch alot of the undercard fights in the same way I wouldn't with boxing.......and I just can't take the womens events seriously it doesn't appeal to me

Not appealing to you is fine but to say you can't take them seriously is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm only a fan of MMA in general since the Brandao fight, the womens fights are great! Often viscous, long hair makes it more obvious when they get hit and because its harder to find a knockout you get those scrappy fights back and forth.

Anyway, hyped for Diaz, I hope he cracks Diaz while he is showboating and fights a similar fight to the Mendez fight integrating kicks to the body.

The new eyes added on the sport does nothing to enhance my enjoyment of it. People may say it's helping to grow the sport, but IMO the UFC was in its heyday between 2008 to about 2011 when it was still nonexistant over on this side of the pond. My worst nightmare is having the sport grow to the point where Sky want to pick it up. Can you imagine Sky Sports News reporting on MMA news around the clock and hyping fights? Bleugh. No thanks.

I'm one of your target audience and I kinda understand where you're coming from but when I get hooked into something I'm in all the way and in the last few years I have become addicted to the buzz that is Connor mcgreggor. I don't have a clue what being in someone's guard is and I don't even try to understand the different weight classes but when I watch Connor fighting I am as passionate as anybody could be and come next week I will be shoulder to shoulder in spirit with the likes of yourself as Connor takes on the world yet again. And no I won't dissappear if and when he loses. It dosnt work that way

his intial step is really bad movment, if dennis siver threw a low kick conor would be on his ass, same if he shot for a takedown.

that could be something somone could exploit in the future if its a consistent thing he does or a tell. but ive never looked for it before.

Siver is moving backwards with both feet slightly off the ground as McGregor's feet come together i.e. can't throw a low kick as you describe? Looks like good timing from McGregor imo.

im just commenting on conors movement, moving both your feet together compromises your balance. yes sivir was moving backwards but if he had planted his feet and thrown a low kick when the gif highlights conors feet he would have kicked his legs from under him, and he was in the position to do that.

Welcome to my world but switch Rugby with MMA. Friends who would slag off 'rugger buggers' for years are now expert having never played the game or now play a very low level or worse tag.
I have had the displeasure of attending games with these numpties who curse at the ref a la soccer hooligans and make cringe-worthy comment in relation to 'unseen work'. Wish the would feck off back to supporting the premiership.

In isolation, yeah I'd agree it's a mistake. You are told to "never" narrow your stance, move you front leg first forward, back like going back etc.

But looking at a short image it in isolation ignores the bigger picture. Conor only made the move because Siver was moving backward. Siver can't throw a low counter moving back. He's nowhere near takedown range either.
If the gif was longer, I think we'd probably see that Siver was knocked back by a right cross.

FWIW, I think the initial skip was setting up a stepping side kick, then he switched to switch to the high kick. Siver's hands to the front first, and he missed the high kick block.

Nates coach says he thinks McGregor is on steroids in this video.

But he also says it would be possible for Nate to make 155 in a week (while currently walking around at 171) but that Conor must be on steroids if he was planning on fighting at 155, but can now make weight at 170.

    says it around 8 minutes.

Don't understand how people associate Conor being defensive with being guilty. The conversation has clearly started about whether he is in roids, and the only reason that conversation came up is because of Nate. He associated his name with roids and now many fans are convinced he is on them. Thus, impacting his image and impacting his achievements.

Conor should sue them right after he kicks his ass. Got both fight purses.

I haven't watched the video yet. But he's making a huge contradiction. Nate is 170+, can make 155 in week. But if McGregor can going to do the same he is on steroids.

Steroids don't aid in making weight.
McGregor was 170 prior to both 189 and 194. And was at least 165 in the octagon. If somebody tried to say weighing in a 170 means putting in 25 lbs, then they don't know how a weight cut works.
