Its time the authorities got strict.

I'd assume this driver is out getting another unroad worthy car, if they haven't already. But it does my head in that these types of scumbags think it's their right to be on the road, where actually having a car is a privilege.. If someone isn't able to afford a car they shouldn't be on the road. But I do agree with you that alot harsher punishments need to be brought in.

    Quite.

The reason only €2 can be deducted is because they cannot decrease a payment below the supplementary welfare allowance level which is €186 per week.
I do remember an article saying that reducing a persons payment below this level could lead to legal bother for the government. This was also mentioned in regards to the payment of other court judgements for debts.

Of course it raises the question is somebody on jobseekers allowance doing community service available for work?

Could they not just do the opposite e.g. Not increase payments until the fine was recovered? e.g. If you are due an extra €50, its diverted until such time as the fine is paid? You have a debt to society, why should you get any more from society with outstanding debt

given the max that can be taken from them a week it would cost more in administration overheads than the fine is worth. The alternative then is community service or prison. Community service seems like an excellent option. Get them to contribute something back to society.

How naive are you? Most of the welfare lot that go around driving untaxed/uninsured cars are not going to show up to do community service any more than they are going to pay their fines. Especially when they know full well that the worst they will get is a day trip to Portlaoise to be booked in and kicked out.

All the excuses are the usual government BS, too much admistrative cost, unfair on the poor scounger, blah, blah, blah.

System should be a simple 10% rider on SW payment per fine to last until fine fully paid off. Commit another crime, another 10%, want to keep your free taxpayer cash stop committing crimes. All we are doing as a society at this stage with our ironclad benefits system is enabling underclass scumbaggery.

This gamble paid off long enough to laugh off any fine.

That's some amount of savings alright.

Probably get a €100 or less fine and pay in €5 installments.

If you look at the annual cost of tax then and multiply it by the years it wasn't paid alone that's roughly €8-1100. No fine will be that amount. They'll keep driving after a ban plus will do a few hours in lieu of the fine. Pity we can't see the type of car.

How much saved on insurance also.

Should include driving with no insurance in the public shaming register Shane Ross is planning for drink drivers.

A 4 figure sum without doubt unless it was a pensioner (highly unlikely).

The fact the driver found the Gardai unfair is alarming. Sense of entitlement possibly?

This problem will get worse, can't see it improving anytime in the long term.

Fantastic idea from Shane Ross, and yes driving with no insurance should be included. It would drastically reduce the amount of banned drivers 'taking a chance' if they knew all the neighbours knew they were banned.

Funny thing is many believe in not saying anything and in a lot of cases are afraid of the types in some cases.

More prison spaces and a proper new prison built to cater for these is badly needed.

They have no problem listing tax defaulters, drivers with no insurance should be much more straight forward.

I doubt most of the toerags driving round without tax/insurance care what their neighbours think about them. They come from a different social class to most of us.

Personally I'd prefer the stocks. Public humiliation my the public and a brilliant way to get rid of rubbish. Make them pick it all up afterwards as part of their punishment.

We're too soft on all forms of crime in this country from petty, to drug, to rape and murder as well as white collar crime

You could look on Street View at what kips or palaces they live in, sometimes they are not your average scummer, the odd time it's a higher up person.

Not really of much use. When or if these scum are in prison they have better facilities incl Sky tv and access to a top class gym. So it is just another holiday.
