News just breaking that Terry Wogan has passed away. It seems 2016 is going to be a bleak year for pioneering legends in their fields.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-35453541

Mod note:I understand that Terry Wogan is going to be seen as more British or more Irish to some people but this is not a thread to troll and/or argue about it. It's a respectful thread so let's keep it that way, thanks.

    Ach, good old Terry.
Kind of fella you would like to meet down the pub for a chat. He could tell a great anecdote.

I had the pleasure of catching him on Radio 2 the odd time when in the U.K. and he was an absolute joy. he was funny, quick witted, and never forgot where he came from.

A contemporary of mine. I met him many years ago when he did the 7o'clock Wogan show and had a drink with him. A funny man at his peak.

    Ah, not another legend.

He made the Eurovision watchable, wonderful broadcaster.

His radio show was huge in the UK too which most people here would be unaware of.

Edit to add one of my favourite Wogan related clips:

Rip Terry, he did a great job of reminding the British that we all didn't just blow things up. Was massive in the UK at a time when it was tough to be Irish .

Used to love his sarcastic comments about block voting when he was presenting the Eurovision .

    RIP Terry

I was born in London in the 80's to Limerick born parents. It wasn't easy being Irish and living in the UK in those days. It was the likes of Terry Wogan that made it a little bit easier and more acceptable in being Irish in Britain. He and other big Irish personalities in the 80s and 90s really paved the way for what the UK has become today for Irish people, a very welcoming place.

    Sad day.

He definitely represented the best of Irishness - charming, warm, genuine, funny and irreverent.

A true icon in his field. RIP.

    His popularity literally spanned generations.
Loved the programmes he did on the Beeb travelling around Ireland. A great ambassador for us.

One of the good guys. :(

    RIP Terry.

At the end of the year, they're going to need a whole supplement for people we lost this year (rather than the usual 2 page spread).

    Lovely guy.

    Quite gutted. :(

Eurovision was never the same when he left it.

    RIP Tell

I think his name was Michael Terrance Wogan.

A true broadcasting legend, both on TV and radio.

    RIP

What horrible, horrible news. Growing up in the UK Terry was a constant fixture in my TV screen as a child. I remember his BBC evening chat show, he was the face of Children in Need and as has been said he made Eurovision watchable, which is a testament to his brilliance as a broadcaster.

When I got older I discovered his morning radio show. The idea that a Radio Two breakfast show could be more popular than the Radio One but when you listened to it it was no sunrise as to why it was so successful and it was all because of his personality. It felt like you were waking up to a friend who would chat with you for the next few hours.

    RIP Terry.

This. Yes I'm sure there will be lots of people in the UK who assume that Wogan was British. Can we please get through this thread without 20 pages of that bollocks? Ta.

Very sad news. So many memories of listening to him with my mum in the kitchen when we lived in England. When I was a small girl, my parents would point to Terry as someone who was Irish as well.
At a time when there must have been pressure to play down his Irish identity (the 70s), he flew the flag for Ireland.

    He was British.
He also happened to still retain his Irish citizenship.

When I lived in the UK he kept me company on the radio on many a dreary morning going to work. I have been in tears laughing to some of his stories especially the Janet and John ones. I used to look at other people in cars to see if they were laughing as well and sometimes they were. Sad loss.

I have to admit I have just shed a tear.
He reminded me so much of my Grandfather also a proud Limerick man.

    RIP

He lived in a place called Taplow in Buckinghamshire, about 3 miles from where I grew up. As the saying goes, nobody had a bad word to say about him. I think that was the key to his success - the warmth and charm were real, not manufactured, and that came across on both TV and radio. Farewell Tel.

With the explosion of celebrity culture over the years we're probably going to have to get used to many, many months like this one. There's more famous people getting older than there used to be.

Sir Terry will be sorely missed, he was a great entertainer on both Radio & TV.
    Can't believe he's gone.
    RIP Terry.

Absolutely shocked waking up to see this. Am old enough to remember his chat show on the beeb, and as long as I can remember Children in Need and Eurovision, he just didn't make the BBC, he WAS the BBC. Would have been an absolute scope for RTE had they got his back.

Would the be ultimate line up of an interview should Heaven have a chat show. Lemmy, Bowie, Rickman, St Peters reaction to them all, with Wogan the Helm.

    RIP

Condolances to your family, friends, and colleagues. You will be truly missed.

I just saw a pix of him on the guardian website from the early-mid 70s and I had the same thought!

His genius was that it appeared to be utterly effortless for him though I'm sure he was working hard under the waterline.

His last TV work was I think his Terry & Mason's Great Food Trip which was a cheap and cheerful "filler" on BBC Two and which ended up a valedictory tour of "his kingdom" he could chat to anyone and anyone passing could chip in with a "hello" as he and Mason walked down the streets.

    Legend RIP

If you were a kid in 70s 80s he was Mr TV. He was on everything. Like Nagui in France.

He had his own chat show, blankety blank.... Yeah remember that.....!.. and presented all the one off stuff. He was the first guy to poke fun at the eurovision when everyone else was taking it seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,573 ✭✭✭pajor

RIP Tog-meister. I'm a bit too young to remember on air for that long, but will always remember him for Eurovision on the Beeb.

    F*ck cancer.

I don't follow? It's not inaccurate, he started out with RTE, moved to the Beeb and has always been quite vocal with respect to his roots.
