This. Yes I'm sure there will be lots of people in the UK who assume that Wogan was British. Can we please get through this thread without 20 pages of that bollocks? Ta.

    He was British.
He also happened to still retain his Irish citizenship.

When I lived in the UK he kept me company on the radio on many a dreary morning going to work. I have been in tears laughing to some of his stories especially the Janet and John ones. I used to look at other people in cars to see if they were laughing as well and sometimes they were. Sad loss.

I have to admit I have just shed a tear.
He reminded me so much of my Grandfather also a proud Limerick man.

    RIP

He lived in a place called Taplow in Buckinghamshire, about 3 miles from where I grew up. As the saying goes, nobody had a bad word to say about him. I think that was the key to his success - the warmth and charm were real, not manufactured, and that came across on both TV and radio. Farewell Tel.

    No way....

"Terry truly was a national treasure." yeah IRISH national treasure

Ah so what! He was over there for years and they're entitled to say that. Get over yourself.

With the explosion of celebrity culture over the years we're probably going to have to get used to many, many months like this one. There's more famous people getting older than there used to be.

Sir Terry will be sorely missed, he was a great entertainer on both Radio & TV.
    Can't believe he's gone.
    RIP Terry.

Absolutely shocked waking up to see this. Am old enough to remember his chat show on the beeb, and as long as I can remember Children in Need and Eurovision, he just didn't make the BBC, he WAS the BBC. Would have been an absolute scope for RTE had they got his back.

Would the be ultimate line up of an interview should Heaven have a chat show. Lemmy, Bowie, Rickman, St Peters reaction to them all, with Wogan the Helm.

    RIP

Condolances to your family, friends, and colleagues. You will be truly missed.

RIP. Always reminded me of my dad!

I just saw a pix of him on the guardian website from the early-mid 70s and I had the same thought!

His genius was that it appeared to be utterly effortless for him though I'm sure he was working hard under the waterline.

His last TV work was I think his Terry & Mason's Great Food Trip which was a cheap and cheerful "filler" on BBC Two and which ended up a valedictory tour of "his kingdom" he could chat to anyone and anyone passing could chip in with a "hello" as he and Mason walked down the streets.

    Legend RIP

If you were a kid in 70s 80s he was Mr TV. He was on everything. Like Nagui in France.

He had his own chat show, blankety blank.... Yeah remember that.....!.. and presented all the one off stuff. He was the first guy to poke fun at the eurovision when everyone else was taking it seriously.

RIP Tog-meister. I'm a bit too young to remember on air for that long, but will always remember him for Eurovision on the Beeb.

    F*ck cancer.

This headline is symptomatic of the Irish inferiority complex with respect to the Brits.

Broadcasting legend and by all accounts a very nice gentleman.

I don't follow? It's not inaccurate, he started out with RTE, moved to the Beeb and has always been quite vocal with respect to his roots.

    The 'Irish' part.

Well he was, no? Do you not think of a British hollywood actor died the British papers would refer to them as British, or any other nationality? Get over yourself.

I don't get you. He was an Irish and British broadcaster of note.

He took out British citizenship, so what do you find so difficult with a very simple headline?

    The 'Irish' part.
Gaybo was talking on RTE radio about Terry this morning and remarked that Terry found it incredible that despite being Irish in the UK at the height of the troubles, he never once received a single piece of hate mail or negativity from listeners about his nationality. Indeed he was an ambassador for the Irish in the UK at the time.

Very sad that in his native country you have pathetic small men making snide remarks about Wogan's nationality.

Wogan was "the voice" of TV and radio through the 70s and 80s. Even though most of his work was for UK stations, his voice was still as iconic in Ireland as Gay Byrne or Larry Gogan.

He always came across as a mature man, but never as an old man - a voice full of wisdom and class, but always with a twinkle of mischief. I'll admit I was surprised to find out he was 77.

    Doesn't look like it.

    Anyway.

Being truthful I didn't think his talk show was great, he was actually at his best talking to normal people rather than the rich and famous. Always seemed a very genuine person and will be missed from TV and radio. RIP.

    RIP

Such sad news, he kept me entertained on my commutes to work, brightening many a dreary morning with his good humour and charm. I nearly crashed the car from laughing at his telling of the Janet & John stories. As a legendary broadcaster he leaves a massive gap to be filled
