News just breaking that Terry Wogan has passed away. It seems 2016 is going to be a bleak year for pioneering legends in their fields.

Mod note:I understand that Terry Wogan is going to be seen as more British or more Irish to some people but this is not a thread to troll and/or argue about it. It's a respectful thread so let's keep it that way, thanks.

    Ach, good old Terry.
Kind of fella you would like to meet down the pub for a chat. He could tell a great anecdote.

I had the pleasure of catching him on Radio 2 the odd time when in the U.K. and he was an absolute joy. he was funny, quick witted, and never forgot where he came from.

A contemporary of mine. I met him many years ago when he did the 7o'clock Wogan show and had a drink with him. A funny man at his peak.

    Ah, not another legend.

He made the Eurovision watchable, wonderful broadcaster.

His radio show was huge in the UK too which most people here would be unaware of.

Edit to add one of my favourite Wogan related clips:

Rip Terry, he did a great job of reminding the British that we all didn't just blow things up. Was massive in the UK at a time when it was tough to be Irish .

Used to love his sarcastic comments about block voting when he was presenting the Eurovision .

    RIP Terry

I was born in London in the 80's to Limerick born parents. It wasn't easy being Irish and living in the UK in those days. It was the likes of Terry Wogan that made it a little bit easier and more acceptable in being Irish in Britain. He and other big Irish personalities in the 80s and 90s really paved the way for what the UK has become today for Irish people, a very welcoming place.

    Sad day.

Can we skip the rest of the year please? I'm not looking forward to the rest of the year if January is anything to go by.

    RIP

He definitely represented the best of Irishness - charming, warm, genuine, funny and irreverent.

A true icon in his field. RIP.

    His popularity literally spanned generations.
Loved the programmes he did on the Beeb travelling around Ireland. A great ambassador for us.

One of the good guys. :(

    RIP Terry.

At the end of the year, they're going to need a whole supplement for people we lost this year (rather than the usual 2 page spread).

    Lovely guy.

    Quite gutted. :(

Eurovision was never the same when he left it.

    RIP Tell

I think his name was Michael Terrance Wogan.

A true broadcasting legend, both on TV and radio.

    RIP

What horrible, horrible news. Growing up in the UK Terry was a constant fixture in my TV screen as a child. I remember his BBC evening chat show, he was the face of Children in Need and as has been said he made Eurovision watchable, which is a testament to his brilliance as a broadcaster.

When I got older I discovered his morning radio show. The idea that a Radio Two breakfast show could be more popular than the Radio One but when you listened to it it was no sunrise as to why it was so successful and it was all because of his personality. It felt like you were waking up to a friend who would chat with you for the next few hours.

    RIP Terry.

This. Yes I'm sure there will be lots of people in the UK who assume that Wogan was British. Can we please get through this thread without 20 pages of that bollocks? Ta.

Very sad news. So many memories of listening to him with my mum in the kitchen when we lived in England. When I was a small girl, my parents would point to Terry as someone who was Irish as well.
At a time when there must have been pressure to play down his Irish identity (the 70s), he flew the flag for Ireland.
