I have a Samsung Smart tv and Virgin Media broadband via a Horizon box. I have a Netflix app and it always craps out half way through a film and I can't get it to work again. However if I play Netflix from my laptop, and I cast it to the telly, it always stays up. I have similar problems with the YouTube app on the smart tv, and the Spotify app. Might be something dodgy going on between the smart tv and the Horizon box communication

Yeah, might be a local issue. I also have a Samsung Smart TV and Virgin and the Netflix, YouTube and the various players apps work perfect. Are you hardwired into your router or using WiFi, I've read that WiFi may be unstable on some of the TVs.
Samsung's Netflix, YouTube and Plex apps are total garbage. Can be controlled by iPad if you put in a special code which they will later forget and disconnect from. Search sucks, apps are slow.

Maybe you have a smart TV with a UI that wasn't designed by a moron, but in my experience most of them are and they just don't seem resourced to run the apps well.

Chromecast can be controlled using your TV remote if you have CEC, which most HDMI TVs do.

I'd have to completely disagree with you on this, do you have old versions?

Your main problem seems to be with the iPad, not the Netflix app. I can pick up any android based device in the house and control it, no need for codes or such nonsense, exactly as you would with a Chromecast. There's not a thing wrong with the app on my TV, it's responsive, search is instant and the GUI is pretty much identical to the desktop version. I've no reason to lie but switching categories, scrolling around, all that is instant, there's no lag.

The Plex app is also pretty much identical to the desktop based one so I don't see what the issue you may have there is.

I've had 2 Chromecasts a long time now and haven't had the need to use the one in the living room since we replaced the TV with the current Samsung one.

    How old is your TV?

Very sad to see all of the staff lose their jobs. I usually went into the dual branded store opposite Dunnes Stores in Athlone while holidaying with family there during the summer and bought a few DVDs and Blu-rays during my time there.

Is that store closed for good or not?

There is one in Longford Town as well. Is that store also closed?

Gone. Empty yesterday when I went passed

Great, but I'm not switching to Android.

Ok, that's good. Not my experience at all, but maybe that's my TV model.

It frequently demands PIN entry, but then fails to find my library when that's done. Have troubleshooted (shot?) it before but support for the Plex app on Samsung is minimal as it is not actually made or maintained by Plex. Instead it's a separate team- in fact iirc it's just one guy.

It's not at all bad when it's not pulling that crap- far better than the Netflix or YouTube apps. But it's much easier with Chromecast.

About 3 years and it was only a €400-ish job at the time, so probably that's the issue. Not upgrading any time soon, though and why should I when I can get much better functionality for about €30?

Not sure if I am hardwired in or not. Would I do this by running an ethernet cable from the back of the telly into the Horizon box ? I have a HDMI cable from the Horizon box into the telly at present, but I assume that is just for the picture and sound quality ? Think that the Smart functions of the telly are controlled via WiFi connection to the box

Can I ask that you continue via PM or if you are looking for a broader audience, the Tech forum might be the place to go.
I'd like to keep this discussion on the fate of XtraVision.

On the subject of Xtravision, my wife loved to go in and buy cheap selling DVDs from time to time. The house is littered with them. I found the staff in my local branch to be a bit rude. However I still feel sorry at so many people out of work now. I was in Monaghan town yesterday and took a look in the local Xtravision. Very sad to see the shelves half stocked and cardboard boxes carelessly strewn around the place. Like as if the staff had to get out in a hurry.

I miss the little xtravision machine at our local supervalue. I did not use it very often, but miss it now that it is gone.

Now to get to work on finding a daycent movie on netflix for tonight.

Are they gone already? The one local to me was restocked today, with Sicario and the walk.

    Our one is gone.

Mind you, they are doing a bit of building work in there but dont see how that could effect it.

Edit: The wife got an email saying that the machine was out of commission due to the building work. So that must be it.

I'm going to really miss xtravision. I have ****e broadband with three wireless (0.85Mb just tested now, with a 60G limit per month) So the whole streaming online option isn't available. I actually got good use out of the xtravision monthly deals.
It really shows that good Broadband isn't just a luxury anymore, as more and more of the things we need including entertainment require fast reliable internet.

its basic evolution,in which Ireland is way behind, since years ago it used to be renting VHS,recording cassettes to play walkmans, recording from radios,CDs-which technology replaced or wiped out. Thus no wonder such businesses going under, when you have bb these days and serices of streaming shows as fast as they hit tv screens anywhere in the world, then options to have full season downloaded in matter of hour or so,whole renting business becomes aged and old.

with current rate of technologies evolving-cds-dvds are on the way out, even BluRay,HD,4k is easier and cheaper to get via internet then go shopping for it.

Outside of major towns and cities especially for people living rurally (yes they exist) streaming movies is not an option. Virgin is not an option. And I think you need broadband for sky on demand and besides paying 33 euro for base sky just to watch occassional movies on demand is not an option for some. I rented a movie recently from xtra vision..3 euro for two nights..same movie is 4.99 on sky to rent. Who was doing the screwing here?

As I said movie streaming, netflix etc is not an option for a lot of people.

But heres the question with the 3 euro retail ?. How much did it cost you to go and rent the film compare to sit on your bum at home ?.

Maybe in 10 years when dvds are well and truly dead and buried some hipsters will bring dvd rentals back.

I just think its another deathknell for rural towns and so on. Post offices closing, garda stations, pubs, factories and so on as well as hopeless broadband. Now the local video rental shops closing, for many the only place to rent DVDs due to crap broadband. Not everyone in Ireland has superfast broadband at their fingertips. Once you go outside cities, its patchy at best and in many places non existent. You are talking mobile broadband and the like with monthly limits and very slow speed. Another example or urban-rural divide. I for one will miss Xtravision. We buy too much stuff online from retailers many of whom are based abroad, often to the detriment of local shops and businesses.

Xtravision has gone into liquidation and ceased trading. Don't want to sound rude but why do you think the kiosks would till be operating?

Cos my local one is still trading, like I said. They got new films in today.

You can get rural broad band , satellite broadband ,and 3g acess so theres
very few places that have no acess to it,
its just broadband is cheaper and faster in urban area.s .
You can buy dvds or get em in any library.
Some one on a mountain in kerry ,can get a satellite dish,
sky tv,freesat .saorview free tv film 4 .as well as someone in dublin .
Lack of acess to tv movies is not a major problem compared with closure of garda stations ,or lack of doctors in rural area.s .
Most people i know gave up renting movies years ago .
Doctors are retiring and there seems to be a shortage of people ready to work in small
    villages to replace them .
I would go to xtravision to buy console games,
renting 1 film for 4 euro makes no sense to me .
we need a change in the law,
a company closes down ,the government will have to come in and pay the cost of redundancy payments ,
even though hmv and xtravision were owned by the same company .

I rented twelve movies at Xtravision at Christmas for €10. I took two out each day over the space of a week. Did it bother me that I had to go into the shop not really because I'd be passing it anyway.
I have an apple TV box and this allows me to access apple movies which are expensive compared go xtravision offers. So I joined Netflixs last night and I'm disappointed with the movie selection.

Blockbuster has just about gone kaput in the US also, they were a nationwide chain in the US, a serious business in its day. It's a sign of the times, it's sad but the video shop is embalmed and buried in an American Oak with silk lining and brass handles. There is no coming back.
