It's really creepy and really weird.

Of course I bet all those PC Brigade SJWs want to live in some kind of sanitised dystopia where we're all identical androids and can't insist on repeatedly saying creepy and weird things to people who are clearly uncomfortable with it .

Disrespectful maybe, not getting the sexist bit.

Christ on a bike, Man asks out Girl, Girl turns out to be a lesbian and Man gets fined 10,000 for being sexist.

Enough of the equality already, it's gone too far.

I'd call it stupid rather than sexist tbh.

You're wan has a fine Inishowen name though, well able to handle eejits like your man.

I watched this on the news earlier.
She looked pretty uncomfortable/embarrassed/shocked when he said it and I know his chairman/boss said it was both of their workplaces so it should never have happened etc etc.

But I think its a wee bit out of proportion imo. He didn't disembowel an infant live on TV, he asked her for a date.
Should he have don't that? Probably not his finest moment but one I genuinely think he just badly misjudged and his desire to impress a very good looking woman impeded his judgement.
He got a fine, he tried to apologise(which I hear she didn't reply to/accept).
He definitely shouldn't have done it and seemed cocky even in apology but as I said he came across as a bit of a d1ck and hopefully he will have learned his lesson.

Really cringy and unprofessional but not sexist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,172 ✭✭✭wadacrack

She was clearly very uncomfortable, Id wonder what the media reaction would be if she seemed a bit more comfortable with what he saying.

But i guess he kind of ruined any chance of that happening when he started saying

    Dont blush baby :D

im in australia atm. the media coverage of this "story" is pathetic. i thought he'd grabbed a tit or something going by the way it was being discussed, when I googled to find out what he actually did (none of the news stories would actually say) I rolled my eyes with such force I flew back out of my chair

that is presumably from the team for being an idiot rather than as a fine for a crime

    What's wrong with being sexy?

Go find @abcgrandstand on twitter and look for the sound cloud link they posted yesterday discussing this. They brought in 2 female journalists who work in the same field and they outlined how often they have to deal with this kind of thing. It's almost impossible to get through an entire day without some sort of similar thing occurring. One of them points out that the guy in question here is known for this kind of behaviour and has a reputation as a creep/sleeze. She said the woman in the clip was already uncomfortable before the interview even began because of who she was interviewing.

it was unappropriated for TV. But if it happened without the camera's would it really be that bad??! which is what I presume the other journalist are on about

He didn't say anything sexual really. Flirty, maybe ott but not sexual. Unprofessional when you consider she's at work and doing her job. That kind of fine is absolutely ridiculous however.

I'd say it would be far more intimidating off camera tbh

The other journalists list a whole pile of things that they have to deal with on a regular basis. Sports is a male dominated world on and off the pitch/field/court. Women trying to make a career in it have to work twice as hard to even be taken seriously, never mind treated well.

In my opinion it doesn't matter if it happens on camera or not. The point is it's incredibly hard for a woman to do almost any job in male dominated sports anyway and behaviour like this makes it even more difficult. She's there to do a job and shouldn't have to worry about what a man is going to say to her while she's trying to do it.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter if you or I think it's sexist or harassment or not. That woman is clearly uncomfortable and the women ABC talked to say that Chris Gayle is known for this kind of thing, so much so that she's already uncomfortable before he even makes the comments. That tells me it's a problem and not just him attempting to be funny and being misinterpreted.

I just realised if I got fined for every time I was stupid around women I'd be so broke I'd have to sell organs.

Was it really? If a politician is doorstopped by a journalist and is told to F off, can the journalist sue them for unfair dismissal?

YT partner account probably, So not clicking giving views that generate cash for the person. Obvious stuff is obvious click bait to get cash.

Women are too sensitive these days, back in the day you just whacked them over the head with your club and dragged them back to the cave by the hair and they were happy to get the attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,675 ✭✭✭the_pen_turner

    She doesn't like men.

surely you cant be expected to track and remember the orientation of everybody you might come in contact with . that would probably a far worse "crime" than this sexism.

    do lesbians not like compliments.

all he said was she had nice eyes. followed by asking her out,.

if he has a history of sleazy comments like this and making women feel uncomfortable then maybe there is some kind of case but surly not sexism.

There is a difference between sexism and sexual harassment. Chances are he's sexist too. The issue at hand though would fall under harassment at worst or inappropriate behaviour at best. The comments other journalists have made lead me to believe it's at worst.

Not sure this link will work..... It did. One of the women gets a bit emotional at the start, please don't roll your eyes and turn it off. Listen to the whole thing if you're anyway interested on having a serious discussion about this. (I'm aware this is After Hours so I won't hold my breath)

Why is he sexist because he hit on a woman?

Get a grip of yourself .

Don't bother reading the whole post or anything.

Blowing it out of proportion how? It's part of a wider problem. You think it's one isolated incident despite being told he has a reputation for it?

Damn, always liked Chris Gayle, kinda assumed he'd have the partying lifestyle but that's stupid. Whether it's merely inappropriate or actually sexist is a bit moot, he was fined, issue done, move on.

This story is the most pathetic thing I've heard in quite a while. Some bimbo airhead who only got her job because of her looks gets hit on camera, ohhh the humanity. And yet theres a video of her hitting on some male model and nobody cares. The SJW Brigade outdone themselves here.

    Haha, I love satire,
The other day I heard men in American colleges are now being forced to get "consent" cards before they have sex with women in case they are accused of rape.... Would be funny if it wasnt so pathetic. Feminazis are finding out what real rape is in Sweden and Germany now they've allowed millions of Muslims to take over.

    ...wait, what?

Yeah the fine seems way OTT and I don't think it's sexist (inappropriate though) however you're being seriously dishonest by saying it was just a guy asking a woman out.
You know it was unprofessional and inappropriate in that context.

Listen to the link I posted. Other journalists state he has a reputation for it. I doubt they're making it up. He's also been accused of flashing his bits at a female staff member at the World Cup.

Rookie mistake to be honest. What he should have said is, "But of course all the female interviewers have lovely eyes". Then paused for a few seconds while looking into the camera, before giving a little wink down the lens and walking off screen.

I agree. Had she had a witty comeback there probably wouldn't have been a word about it. I don't know of him but I presume hes some kind of star in his field so he's 'allowed' to be bold! In the real world he's just a sleazy knob.

If it has been a player who was known for joking around in a friendly way maybe she would have responded differently. The fact the guy apparently has a reputation as a sleeze is probably why she didn't react well to it.

I have listened. He may have but it is only this incident that he is getting fined for, and it does seem a bit OTT to be fined 10,000

He didnt really say anything sexual etc. But it was an uncomfortable vibe and inappropriate which is why it is getting coverage.

Surprised seeing sexism being brought up to the extent it has

He is a giant in the world of cricket, loads of firsts and records, former captain of the West Indies, real imposing batsman, one of the highest earners in the game, worth tens of millions. 10k would be lunch money.

The team fined him for it so it's on them. Either they think it's a serious enough one off to warrant that big a fine or they know it's an ongoing problem and are trying to stamp it out.

No one is comparing it to the Syrian conflict, merely analysing the behaviour of a famous sports star.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

A person doing their job shouldn't be expected to just put up with and laugh off sexual advances like that.

She's not hanging by the bar in a club, this is her job and she's conducting a professional interview with an athlete.

To think this is a case of "woman can't take a compliment" is a textbook definition of sexist. As is the interviewee's conduct in the first place.
