I don't think the novelty of the M3 will wear off if it's any consolation. It's the only car I've had that I regularly think about 10 years on.

Still trying to figure out what's the right choice. Why did you sell it out of interest?

Obviously this isn't a money no object decision, and I really need to balance things in my head. I've been mulling this one for some time. If anyone had asked the st vs m3 question on here and I was replying, I'd be the first one saying M3 all the way, what kind of stupid fecker compares an M3 to a fiesta.... for all the reasons mentioned above, which I agree with.

When it comes to putting the rubber on the road though, with my own cash, I'm still very hesitant though. The only thing for it for me is the engine/sound, and the fact it's a full fat M car which as anyone whos into cars, I would love to own.

But it's compromised for my needs, I have kids hopping in and out of the car so back doors are very handy, I could live with the coupe and it's doable though but it's more hassle that I might resent. IT doesn't do phone/spotify/heated seats/basic ****ty sound system etc...I've owned an e92 before, so I know they are very practical though as far as coupes go. The other issue is cost per km, which I'm trying to offset in my head with low depreciation but I can't be sure of where prices will go or stay. There are plenty of M3s for sale low to mid 20s, but they are not shifting from what I can see.

Looking at the ST again this evening and also at the impact the VRT changes post Jan will have. Feck me the new system doesn't half complicate things....

Co2 on the ST is 136g/km. So I looked and thought grand, current rate is 19% and new rate is 18%. Figured that can't be right then I copped the little equation....Petrol: y = x(0.9227)+34.554 so new rate is actually 26%!!

I could spend time complaining about the silly system, but after I plug in a fresh ST, the VRT goes up by about €1400 after January.

Does that mean now is a decent time I wonder.

The repayments were €1300 per month before a drop of fuel. I was a single man with nobody to answer to :)

A year and a half later and I felt I’d shelled out enough! Only reason. Much more manageable price wise now but mine had a full warranty so it’s swings and...!

I really had great fun in the Fiesta, costs will be far more manageable and predictable. But an M3 is another level altogether. I remember being on N11 and waiting for a 911 to pull in so I could press on. Insane levels of acceleration.

Deane Motors had her for sale a few months ago and for 5 mins I was curious :)

If you're going to be dailying the car with kids, then I wouldn't buy the M3. Any other scenario then it's M3 all day for me, it's a car you could easily hang onto forever and be perfectly happy, it's so unique compared to other generations of the M3 that a good example here will be a great thing to have in the future, as there were really only 2 MY anyone brought in/was willing to tax. It's very quick while still remaining usable on Irish roads because of where it makes its power, it feels very linear. It is also literally one of the best sounding cars ever with the right exhaust, that alone will make you happy anytime you drive it.

Why dont you consider an e90 m3? Good few over in the UK.

There is a big difference in spec between non m and m cars. Id be surprised if most M3s didnt have blutetooth as standard and its not difficult to find one with the logic 7 sound sytem and heated seats. If you can stretch a bit, the later LCI versions have bluetooth streaming.

How about an M140i would be a good half way house between the two. It's a hooligan of a car. Probably hold it's value well.

Nice red one here https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-m140i/26415906 (think I know the seller of that one haven't met him in years but he always looked after his cars.)

Some of the ones I have looked at are pretty bare bones. LCI means 2.5k tax which I'm not gonna do so rules that out unfortunately. Also want to keep purchase price low.

Yeah I like those 140s but interior is identical to what I'm in at the minute by the looks of it and would probably prefer more of a change. Plus they are beyond what I want to spend on a car right now unfortunately.

Red one looks like it was Jon's of the Forensic Detailing channel on YouTube so would be very well looked after

Edit: Says so in the ad, lovely car, would prefer 3dr though

Class car the E92 M3. I drove one once (interestingly had the Fiesta ST at the time and the M3 owner was considering one as a cheap to run daily, he bought an ST200 in the end). Its true what you are saying, they are only getting going well into triple figures.

If I was buying one I think I'd have to have around €4k set aside and the price of 12 months tax.

The colour on that car always looked so well in his videos, almost a hint of orange off it rather than just a normal red.

Vintage an S3 saloon or an a45/CLA45 float your boat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Not really no, even if I could afford one I find them pretty dull to be honest. There's an A45 local to me and not doubt it's a serious car but just not my thing.

I keep getting drawn back to a wee fiesta to rip around in. Interesting that post earlier where an M3 owner wanted to offload it and get an st too. I think I would love an M3 if I was comfortable enough to own it with zero worries but I just get the feeling it'll be a bit of a worry and trying to explain it the OH, it makes zero sense other than it sounds good.

There's a fiesta an hour from me I might go take a look at. It's 5 door, plenty of spec etc and I could buy it, vrt it and put the extra cash away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,903 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I will confirm though, he did buy an ST200, sold the E92 and traded the Fiesta in for an M2 after around a year.

To be honest an M2 appeals to me a lot more than an E92 does now. Another two years should see them fall to reasonable money too. If i was to aim for any M car it would be one of those.

Yeah thats fair enough. When i was looking for my e46, there were plenty which had heated seats and Harmon Kardon sound systems. I would have thought that e90/92s would be similar. The tax on post 08s is definitely a killer.

Try out some of the owners forums on bluetooth streaming and what your options are. Good few around that can be broguht in under 25k after VRT (not sure about after Jan 21)

Same. M2 competition is faster than the e92 m3 but more importantly, cheaper to run in every sense. I reckon my next car will be one of those unless the government really screw us over in the next year or two.

    Every sense except depreciation.

maybe things have changed but when i had my e46 m3 depreciation was pretty savage, have the e92s levelled out?

I think maybe folk reckon they are now a €25k/€30k car and won't be much cheaper going forward whereas an M2 bought for €50k/€60k+ will be not so far along the depreciation curve maybe? E46 M3 are now €15k minimum presumably.

Apolgies.......... so long story short, as you say, e92s folk reckon have levelled out depreciation wise.

Of course when you're comparing a 13/14 year old car to a 4/5 year old.

M2s not really an M car though is it....

    M5?

M2 competition most certainly is. Same S55 engine as m3/4 just detuned slightly, still 405bhp. Original M2 has older N55 which was replaced with B58 so I'd agree with that not really being an m car.

Wouldn't be long in the country either. He only sold it a few months ago.

Yeah but it needs to be considered same as everything else, M2 comp will still cost you an arm and a leg to fix something, tax might be cheaper and fuel a bit better, but you're also losing thousands a year that you probably wouldn't with an M3. Obviously I'm not telling anyone anything new here, but it still needs to be said :D

There is 2 grand and 2 years between these fiestas so maybe they don't depreciate much at all or am I missing something?

the m3 may not depreciate much but day to day costs will be higher and that can be annoying.

    Thanks for that.

That 2018 one is mental money. New owner of the 330d is enroute here now so hopefully all goes ok. Feckin hate the actual transfer part as always paranoid when dealing with lumps of money.

Funny, when I was browsing for these yokes on Vintage's behalf a few days ago I thought these 2 cars were the same, just 2 separate ads for the same car with one of the ads with the "wrong" price. The asking price for the 2018 car is ambitious to say the least.

Well done. Congratulations. How long did you have it up for sale in the end? A couple of months?
I hope you enjoy the search for the next one.

I think the ad went up originally in the early summer, and to be honest very few calls etc about it. I fancy a change just but that car was/is fantastic, so it not selling didn't bother me at all. I turned off message center on donedeal and didn't reply to the odd text I got. First person to view it bought it. He viewed it weeks ago and then needed to sort out a few bits on his end then came called me back even though I had the ad down. I had to think it over again but feck it, life's too short. Next car will be less capable no doubt but sure something different do no harm.

I had a look at similar cars to the BM in the north there this evening and they are asking what I paid 2 and half years ago even on private sales. Not sure what's going on there....
