First off, Americans will always get treated differently to other migrants because they are considered part of the "western world".

ALOT of irish people have an american conenction and alot of Irish people feel a personal or family bond to the United States....also youre a native english speaker, which helps alot.
So with that said, most Irish people will welcome you! and be curious about you!

However, you may always be "The American" but you wont be the only person of your kind and if you put in enough effort, you can usually intergrate quite well...racist and xenephobic people are everywhere, so ignore stupid comments if you get them (they should be rare anyways)

look up a guy called Des Bishop.... He was from Boston but had an Irish connection. He moved back to Ireland and intergrated quite well. He even speaks irish fluently!
    Bishop is from flushing NY

Not having great writing skills and working in a field that doesn't particularly require great writing skills - I don't believe that's a massive issue. It doesn't seem to be for all those already living here whom it applies to.

Other than that, what are the major concerns for the OP?

    I admire your temperament

Okay, I'm convinced everything will be grand. YUP! YUP! . I'm glad that's sorted.

Hah, nothing that's actually said along those lines will affect me. I need a job and no amount of encouragement can be traded in for an acceptance letter and salary.

By the same token I sincerely would take critical advice. There is a certain way I'd talk and act in the company of SVPs or executive types, hell even around anyone higher up than my boss. There's a completely different way to act around the hunkies I see 75% of the time.

If there's any executives or hiring managers for chemical companies listening, let me know and I'll start editing my posts.

    Until then, yinz'll live

    begrudgery (bɪˈɡrʌdʒərɪ )
    Definitions
    noun
(Irish, informal) resentment of any person who has achieved success or wealth

You seem to want to take the guy down a peg with regards to his written English, and it very much points at you begrudging the fact that he works in what is an intellectual field. But given that the word itself is identified as Irish, congratulations on teaching him a little bit more about our culture.

Yes you have hit the nail on the head . There is nothing I like better than begrudging the achievements of strangers. There is hardly enough time in the day with all the begrudging. I find it handy when dismissing unpalatable comments as well. Sling an accusation of begrudgery to muddy the issue works a treat.

    >>What you might find however is that the US governments foreign policy is rather unpopular by and large. Particularly its actions in the Middle East. With that in mind as long as your not going around telling people " We saved your asses in WW2" you will be fine. <<

Best for the OP not to engage in any Political debate.I myself am convinced that the American Military Industrial Complex are the greatest evil in this World .Americans as individuals though can be fine .Living abroad myself currently i would not want to be judged for example on the actions of the Irish Government .The problem is though that the actions of the American Government have consequences all over the Globe .( Sorry if my spelling and grammer are ****e to those who are sensitive to such issues ;-)

    Jesus Tigger, paragraphs now.
Your posts in this thread have fit the definition of the word begrudgery like a glove, whatever you do in your everyday life is none or my business nor interest.

My username is also not Tigger. For someone on their high horse about diction and grammar, you no read much good.

It seems strange that someone with your level of education would have such poor command of the English language.
If I were you I wouldn't harp on about your 1.4 liters of Irish blood or you might find yourself the subject of derision.
Before leaving America it might be an idea to familiarise yourself with world events.

It wasn't slagging me or Billy86 it was directed at a nice american person who wanted to know about moving to a better country, our country. Everyone else here was positive towards him but you had to act the fcuktard, he dosen't know the game so don't pretend you were bouncing off us, you were picking at him.
céad míle fáilte an all that ffs.

You went on to suggest he was a Walter Mitty type.

The fact is English classes are not part of an engineering curriculum (any engineers reading, feel free to correct me on this!).

There's dreaded reports to write up but that's about it. From talking to lecturers it is a common thing for engineers to avoid writing. Students avoid essay style questions as much as possible.

I do find it strange that English ability is often used as a measure of intelligence here, if there is a typo in your post then you can't be well educated. People tend to get others to proof read important documents in the real world, not so much for forums. There are people on boards who consider themselves well educated and they can't even describe one machine learning algorithm, what kind of clown college did they go to? Or maybe they just studied a different area.

Get your head down Tigger you are rambling a bit. I feel I have been overly hard on you and you're only awake to see if it can get any worse .

Good luck OP , wouldn't advise calling people "hunkies" generally but some might appreciate it.

    Psh, if the shoe fits...

No but seriously, American politics are a huge reason that I want to get OUT. It took a miracle in the SCOTUS to grant marriage equality, and people are still fighting it. Homophobia is rampant around here. Commercially, this country is light years ahead of most of the world, but socially, it's acceptable that 50% of the population still lives in the Dark Ages.

    , wouldn't advise calling people "hunkies" g

I found that the Irish (generalizing here, maybe it's not true) tend to sling around the N word like it's nothing.

Similarly, hunky is a pretty light term here, if it's offensive I'll gladly clean it up.

I was all for you earlier but the terms "intellectual" and "i'm highly skilled" is making me think your a knob.

Edit - the last few pages have made me think someone else is a bigger knob - so you are now less of a knob - but still borderline knobby.

    Thread carefully!!!

No not really offensive , just a woman might say it about a man and your sexual orientation would be questioned if you said it about a man.
I haven't heard the N word used much if at all.

Relatively certain the "intellectual" score is about

    Pitt - 5
    Rest of thread - 966

    OOOH, you mean "hunk"

Hunky is a colloquialism, usually directed towards Eastern Europeans, since it derives from "Hungarian". However, today it gets slapped onto any white unskilled or nominally skilled laborer.

    We definitely do not.

And do you mean to say 'honky', as in a white person? Because a hunk would be a word I'd expect to hear about the cute guy on the football team in a 90's American teen movie.
