People not removing plates from barbells after they've finished.

There's a special place in hell for these people. A deeply special place. It always makes me think: is there even a point to having a nice body if you're an inconsiderate jerk?

But sure then the "magic plate fairy" who cleans up after everyone would be out of a job? They are actually being very considerate :D:D

    No, nothing like that.

Ok I googled random words and found this:

    Ahhh you mean Salmon bench?

Maybe this has been posted before or maybe I'm being a little whinge but I've noticed something really annoying in the gym the last few weeks.

So I go in the evenings after work to a Dublin City Center gym which is obviously quite busy but nothing that would put you off. However, there are a few different classes going on at this time in the larger open spaces (astro etc.), again to be expected at this time.

I like to listen to audiobooks while I workout (weird, I know) and I've found lately that the classes absolutely BLARE the music to the point I can't hear the audiobook even with headphones. They're not cheap, poor quality headphones either so I think the music volume is excessive (adding in one particularly annoying instructor who SCREAMS during the class rather than shouting so the class can hear). Very frustrating but again I may be being a whinge :P

I saw the thread title and thought no way! There can't be 192 pages on behaviour people get annoyed with in gyms and I was right.

Anyhow on topic. Hate when people don't replace yesterday's gym gear and think it will do two sessions or more.

No excuses for that. I can't recall if I posted it here or not but when I was at UCC there was a guy that would wear his hurling/football jersey back to back for a few days. In fact I don't think he ever wore anything different. But GAA jerseys at least back then would have a distinct smell off them with a bit of sweat. Even if you wore one to a game for the day you'd notice it, so you can imagine what the stench was like from this guy.
You'd know he was in the cardio section before you'd even get into the gym.

Gym staff having the gym music blaring to the point where it's definitely damaging people's ears.

Guys repeatedly making insanely loud noises by dropping barbells / dumbells / plates / letting metal plates slam against other metal surfaces. And I don't just mean loud.... I mean LOUDDDDD. You can feel a headache coming on the more they do it. The sheer ignorance and arrogance is baffling!!

Who knew hearing damage was such an important part of working out!??

Haha, mine is not in the city centre. Nice to know it's not just mine though.

I never post here. My gym is generally a great place but today I witnessed something truly horrendous. Was in the jacks and some lad came out from having a dirty shïte, didn’t wash his hands and straight into the gym no doubt pawing every bar and dumbbell around him. Absolute fücking scrote.

A lad mentioned to me that one of the PTs working out of the gym I'm in did that recently. He was disgusted but frankly there's probably AIDS lingering on most bars. Not excusing what's manky but bars are likely to be rancid petri dishes at the best of times.

Yup, I've seen it myself. Considering most men don't wash their hands after using the bathroom I think it's safe to say we've all experienced this whether we think so or not. :( Another reason to wear gloves......

That combined with pretty much no-one bringing a towel into the gym with them, no-one wiping down after them, people wearing the same clothes repeatedly etc., I'm amazed I go at all for hygienic reasons!

There's one guy who sweats like a pig I've seen using the benches. No towel, no wipe down. There's practically a puddle left behind after him on whatever he uses. And he just leaves it there.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Those knurled bars are a cesspool. I get horrendous callouses on my hands from them and I don't wear gloves, I wrapped my hands with that tissue to save my hands on the last two sets, the tissue was brown and black after two sets... I've hand sanitiser in my gear bag and it goes on my hands before I get into my car after a session. Disgusting.

Wouldn't be a fan of people wheeling one or two big plates across the gym with no regard for others.

Type of bacteria is key there tho.

Bacs in the jax are gonna be from poo and pee which can kill ya.

On the keyboard is from your fingers which you're fairly tolerant of and are generally way less dangerous

That depends on what you are doing while at the keyboard... could be spreading the HIV 👀

Get noise reduction or sound cancelling ones, they aren't that expensive and will drown out most of the external noise.

I always used the cheap €20 earphones and found myself competing with the blaring dance music of the gym. Got a pair of sennheiser buds with noise canceling that were significantly more expensive, the volume is lower in them but you can’t hear any external noise.

I might look into that as well. I have airpods currently which are great for the phone but don't completely block out the sound

Stink of sweat off this fella in my gym today.
    Felt like throwing up.
Why is it so hard to wear deodorant?

PT's who take over entire areas of gyms so you can't get near anything for ages.

The problem wasn't sweat or lack of deodorant. It was probably clothes with stale sweat. No amount of deodorant is going to mask that.

Went to the gym in a hotel I was staying at in America, small gym but was always empty, only had one bench but was never an issue as I was always the only one there. Last day and I'm using the bench, as I'm lying back in the middle of a set some guy comes over, stands above me looking down at me. So I stop and ask him if he was alright and he says "Mind if we swap between sets". I was shocked, so I said let me finish up my next set and its all yours. He stands next to me, uncomfortably close, so I just finished up slowly. Then when I got up and wiped the bench, told him it was all his, he says thanks and goes walking on the treadmill for about 10 minutes :eek:

    Some people are just odd.

Hate to say it but there's fecal matter everywhere. There's just more of it in the jax (unsurprisingly)

More info. needed! What exercise were you doing at the time? What was your reaction? What did he (I assume it's a he) say when confronted on this?

I couldn't confront them because i didnt see who it was. Was on a break between squatting. I assume it was the guy beside me who mysteriously ended up eith a green 10kg plate just the same.
I said did you take my plate
    Huh
    Did you take my plate
    Huh there's another rack
DID YOU TAKE MY PLATE OR SEE WHO DID
    no

    Fine

Now i know i apparently have to guard the barbell in future. I heard a rattle all right but people take and replace plates off the racks all the time so i wasnt bothered to look
