Priest at the Connors' family funeral in Ballally to speak about the terrible prejudice shown to travellers. Hope he also presents the other side.

Apparently this site is not suitable due to feuding between the current residents of this site and the bereaved family who are looking to be rehomed.

It seems strange the the residents who do not want a halting site set up next door to them are being castigated and guilt-tripped by the media, yet no one has said a word about feuding family in the other halting site who won't call off their of their feud with their recently bereaved kinsmen who just lost 10 family members!
Yeah we'd need an unbiased media, that actual answers tough questions for that to happen.

I didn't hear of any religious congregation offering to house the family either.

You won't reach the end of the road if those "bigot" residents have blocked off access will you. :D

its all covered by legislation. the existing garda resources can only do so much

Missed the point by a country mile.

The point the poster was making wasn't that the gardai were under-resourced to deal with it, it was that they shouldn't have been breaking the law with such disrespect to others and to the safety practices of the hospital in the first place, in a manner in which the vast majority of the settled community do not do. While some people will always do these things regardless, the poster was highlighting the fact that the ratio of people who do this between the settled community and the travelling community.

Once converted, the site will also have all appropriate safety measures included, said the council:
    • Fire extinguishers
    • Smoke detectors
    • Lighting
    • CCTV
    • Perimeter fencing
    • Site monitoring and maintenance.
All of the above are to be provided by the council. Maybe it's the cynic/realist in me but I wonder how long before the CCTV .......ahem..... fails to work?

I am delighted for the residents. Their courage and bravery when under-siege from the liberal media and the far left has been inspirational.

He/She was obfuscating as per usual. If the miscreants didn't routinely break the law I think you'd agree there would have been no issue regarding garda resourcing.

Even as a stalwart anti-violence and anti-gun individual, I'm beginning to consider options to protect life and limb. It'll be my #1 point on the doorstep when strangers bang on my door and demand to talk to me after dark. They may want my vote but how do I know that unless they phone for an appointment?

And to be fair, these people waiting on accommodation is not my families problem.
no but its the council's. and they need to be able to do that without nimbys causing trouble

The council need to treat all residents of the borough fairly.

I'm absolutely delighted for the Rockville community but I'd urge them to stay vigilant for the next week or two until matters are set in stone. Weasel words and all that.

The Council had seven years to short this out, but did fúck all until now. They've made a complete mess of this situation.

I think everybody living there need to make sure that entrances are still blocked for the next few weeks at least, just in case the council decide to be sneaky.

    Good on the residents.

I wish we here in Wexford could do similar for the swathes of the travelling community that have arrived since last night and will continue to arrive before the weekend, causing pretty much all pubs in the area to close during a such a prosperous period as the Wexford Opera Festival.

By the way, for the past two nights Gardai have been seen breaking up huge fights and pepper spraying a number of the same community outside one pub that didn't close its doors, before end of the road is on here telling me they have done no wrong.

the council will probably have found something better. it won't be because of a few nimbys if they have decided not to use the site. either way this family rightly will be helped dispite those who have an issue.

i think any attempt to do that should be met with every piece of legislation to force unblocking. hopefully then the council will leave the land to terun into waste land and not maintain it

I suspect its exactly because of the nimbys

Fantastic result for the residents, they stood up and fought the good fight and won. Humiliating result for the council, they could have avoided this mess if they had had some cope on to begin with.

Hopefully the liberal media and loons will question why the council failed to draw down on the national funding for traveller housing over a repeated number of years. This funding was there and could have been used to renovate the proposed new permanent site after it was closed by the council 9 years ago. Who knows maybe the tragedy could have been avoided if they done so.

Hopefully the travellers community take stock of their actions and lifestyle and realise they are responsible for the ill will held towards them.

    Hi All,

as a close friend and supporter of two of the families that live in Rockville road I want to say thanks for the words of support and encouragement.

I think Dubl07 nailed it with "The council need to treat all residents of the borough fairly."

There is so much more to this story than any of us will ever know and some is better left unsaid. It is a horrific tragedy made inordinately worse by the clumsy knee jerk reaction and lack of planning and foresight by the County Council and those who would judge either these poor traveller families or the residents without facts compassion and insight.

We only see parts and some unfortunately only see the parts they want to see.

I hope the council learn for this and provide adequate and suitable accommodation not just for these poor families but others who are disadvantaged in our society and community.

Thanks agin to everyone for thinking, discussing and debating. I hope we all keep debating and sharing points of view so we can enjoy a better less judgmental society in the future.

    Best regards

    lol

Of course it's because the residents blocked them.
